~Debra Lynn-Schmitz, President

Thank you, Medina.

When I started with the Chamber in 1987, the population of the greater Medina area was about the population of the City of Medina, today. It was already entering the period of growth we've experienced since 1990 and it definitely had a more rural character. Today, as I leave, it is a thriving community with a quality of life that continues to attract new business and residents. It is a community where our past High School graduates come home to raise a family, become entrepreneurs and establish new roots for their children and future generations.

This has been such a rewarding career. Medina is a unique, amazing community of people that care. From our elected officials to our community volunteers, from our business leaders to our educators, the people that make up this community are eager to participate and make this a better place to live and do business.

I appreciate the commitment and dedication of the people that have worked beside me over the years; the teams and partnerships we created to solve problems and create a vision, the willingness to accept one another and our differences to achieve something positive for this great community.

Thank you for permitting me to serve the greater Medina area as a champion for business and the community. I will always be an Ambassador for Medina County. I am leaving Medina for another career adventure, but Medina will always be a part of me.

In the meantime, if you ever get down to Siesta Key, Florida, please stop in the Chamber of Commerce and say hello.

Ohio regulations require modicum of common sense

February 12, 2014

QUESTION: As a business owner, there are several rules that can make it difficult and oftentimes more expensive to expand my business. I know there was some type of review committee organized a few years ago to help streamline the regulations. Is that program still active?

ANSWER: Many business owners have unfortunately experienced the same frustrations as you throughout Ohio, which is why the review committee you refer to, the Common Sense Initiative, was formed. The CSI was launched in January 2011 by Gov. John Kasich and placed under the leadership of Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor (a fellow CPA) and is still very active.

The goal of the CSI is to reform Ohio's regulatory policies and help make Ohio a jobs- and business-friendly state. CSI reviews Ohio's regulatory system to eliminate excessive and duplicative rules and regulations that stand in the way of job creation.

In addition, a nine-member Small Business Advisory Council was created to advise the CSI, governor and lieutenant governor on the adverse impact government regulations have on small businesses. (Crystal Faulkner serves on the SBAC representing Southwest Ohio.)

Taylor recently issued a 2013 annual report for the CSI that included key findings and regulatory reform efforts. Last year, the CSI office reviewed more than 1,500 proposed rules. Since the inception of CSI, state agencies have filed 25 percent fewer business rules. As agencies review existing regulations and develop new ones, CSI requires them to analyze the regulation's impact to business by going through a "Business Impact Analysis."
