Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce Presidents Column
~Debra Lynn-Schmitz, President
Happy New Year!
Welcome to a new and exciting year at the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce!
At the end of the month, the Board of Directors will meet for a 24 hour retreat to establish the priorities and goals for 2014. They do this at their own expense in order to give your needs and expectations their undivided attention.
For our 75thAnniversary last year, we opened the 25-year time capsule. We will be closing it again at the end of February but we would like to add some items before it is sealed. Please send us an electronic photo of you and your business and we will include it in the capsule.
We are recruiting students for next year's Young Entrepreneur's Academy, YEA!. Registration is open until September and the application is located on our website. The program accepts any high school student that resides in Medina County. This program teaches a student how to launch a business or enterprise. Over the thirty-week program, students will learn from experts in accounting, law, marketing and other areas of business and develop a real business plan. These are lifelong skills that students may not get through their current school or even into college. We are recruiting students currently in grades 8-11 for the October, 2014 start. If you have or know of a student that might be interested, please let us know and we will follow up with information and an application now.

Ohio Minimum Wage Increase January 1, 2014
Ohio's minimum wage is scheduled to increase on January 1, 2014 to $7.95 per hour for non-tipped employees and to $3.98 per hour for tipped employees, plus tips. The increased minimum wage will apply to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $292,000 per year.
The current 2013 Ohio minimum wage is $7.85 per hour for non-tipped employees and $3.93 for tipped employees, plus tips. The 2013 Ohio minimum wage applies to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $288,000 per year
The Constitutional Amendment passed by Ohio voters in November 2006 states that Ohio's minimum wage shall increase on January 1 of each year by the rate of inflation. The state minimum wage is tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for urban wage earners and clerical workers for the 12-month period prior to September. This CPI index rose 1.5 percent over the twelve month period from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013. The Amendment also states that the wage rate for non-tipped employees shall be rounded to the nearest five cents. For employees at smaller companies (with annual gross receipts of $288,000 or less per year in 2013 or $292,000 or less per year after January 1, 2014) and for 14- and 15-year-olds, the state minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
