Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce Chairman's Column
~Chad Wilson, Chairman
What a year it has been! As I wind down my term as Chairman of the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce board, here are several highlights from 2013:
This year we celebrated a significant milestone in the Chamber's history - 75 years serving our members and our community.
We determined the need to re-align the Chamber staff to better meet the needs of our organization today and in the future. As part of that, we welcomed Jennifer Gray as our Program Administrator.
We had several successful and exciting member events this year; Shared golf outing with the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce, Women's Expo, Hill 'n Dale shooting event and many member meetings including presentations from the City, Medina County Economic Development Corporation, United Way as well as informational session on the Healthcare changes and networking techniques.
This year the Young Entrepreneur's Academy graduated 14 students, representing 10 business plans! Many, many people from our organization donated their time, expertise and treasures to make this a viable program. Thank you!
We continue to have a strong relationship with our legislatures at the local, state and federal levels. Events this year included a member lunch with Lt. Governor Mary Taylor and a legislative breakfast we co- hosted with Westfield Insurance, Brunswick and Wadsworth Chambers with our State and Federal legislators.
Our economic development efforts were active and productive in 2013 as well. We continue to work closely with the City, Medina County Economic Development, Workforce Development, County Transportation Task Force, Uptown Business Development and Main Street Medina. In addition, this year we participated in over a dozen ribbon cuttings! 2014 Introduction In 2013, we started discussions with the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce and the Young Professional Association to form a larger, more significant organization. I am pleased to report that our exploratory committee has found a lot of positives from these talks ... and quite frankly, very few negatives. More recently we have been talking with other Chambers in the County that have expressed an interest in being at the table. You will hear much more about this in 2014 as the conversation turns to action.
We are looking at several options for redevelopment on our property at Friendship and Court Streets in anticipation of our growth.
Chambers across the country are moving to a dues model that uses a membership investment formula or "tiered dues". We are exploring how this concept can enhance benefits for our members.
Look for new and exciting programs to network and help you grow your business in 2014! Stepping into the Chairman's position for 2014 is Eric Shaffer (First Merit Bank). Eric has been very active in the evolution of the Chamber of past few years and is well-suited to continue the positive strides we've made. My sincere wishes for a happy and safe holiday season to you and your families! |

Ohio Minimum Wage Increase January 1, 2014
Ohio's minimum wage is scheduled to increase on January 1, 2014 to $7.95 per hour for non-tipped employees and to $3.98 per hour for tipped employees, plus tips. The increased minimum wage will apply to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $292,000 per year.
The current 2013 Ohio minimum wage is $7.85 per hour for non-tipped employees and $3.93 for tipped employees, plus tips. The 2013 Ohio minimum wage applies to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $288,000 per year
The Constitutional Amendment passed by Ohio voters in November 2006 states that Ohio's minimum wage shall increase on January 1 of each year by the rate of inflation. The state minimum wage is tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for urban wage earners and clerical workers for the 12-month period prior to September. This CPI index rose 1.5 percent over the twelve month period from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013. The Amendment also states that the wage rate for non-tipped employees shall be rounded to the nearest five cents. For employees at smaller companies (with annual gross receipts of $288,000 or less per year in 2013 or $292,000 or less per year after January 1, 2014) and for 14- and 15-year-olds, the state minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.

How to have Fun (and not get stressed)
for the Holidays
How not to get stressed is to remember the season, the season of celebrating family and other loved ones, not the goal of finding the latest gadget and consumerism.
It is all right if it doesn't get done. One of my favorite phrases is, 'then what?' Think about the worst thing that could happen and ask yourself, 'then what?' and then if you come up with other things keep asking yourself, 'then what?' Finally your over-stressed brain will realize that nothing really bad will happen if all of the little tasks don't get completed now and it is not going to be 'the end of the world'.
This exercise is how you can sort through what really has to be completed and what can be put off until another time.
Another tool to have fun and not get stressed is to laugh. Yes, I mean just start laughing. Numerous studies have found that laughter (even fake laughter) will help you become less stressed or eliminate your stress. So start laughing today.
The third tool that can be useful for those times that stuck in traffic due to weather or too many people on the road is play your favorite music in the car and sing to it. Even if you're in the car with someone choose an old fashion song that most everyone knows and sing. Around this time of year we'll turn on a station that is playing Christmas carols and have a sing-along or if you are by yourself put in your favorite CD and crank the volume (not too loud) and sing. The people in the next car might think you are crazy but you are crazy with fun and happiness.
Try some of these tools to help you manage and you will find that these Holidays will be the best that you have.
