Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.   AMEN.

Dear Friends,

From Sunday's sermon I have been pondering the distinctive identity of "Christian".  In our journey of faith the Holy Spirit is at work from beginning to end.  In the Philippians class on Sunday we looked at one verse in particular, Philippians 1:6...

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you
will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Notice that all this is God's work, He began it, inaugurated the action.  This greek word is one that is definitive and deliberate, not impulsive or arbitrary.  A theological topic is soteriology, (the study of salvation)  examining the many aspects and actions surrounding redemption. The work of salvation from a human perspective begins with Regeneration, that is the Holy Spirit working in us allowing us to see the beauty of Christ Jesus, to look upon Jesus as Lord and Savior with affection and to see our need in for redemption.  It is the Holy Spirit "wooing us" to Almighty God.  That is the beginning work that leads to Faith that leads to Justification that leads to Sanctification.  This verse in Philippians captures the whole process. A work that is begun and brought to completion by God's hand and it is as sure as the coming of the Lord.

There are a lot of gifts of the Holy Spirit, a variety of lists found in the scripture. We often may focus on the manifestations of the Holy Spirit and there is nothing wrong with that.  As I consider the work of the Holy Spirit in my life I am thankful for so much but today in particular I am thankful that He led me to see Jesus, to love and serve the Lord.  I am grateful for that work of regeneration.  May we yield our lives to the Holy Spirit in such a way that we would be used in that process for others...
