FREE Knit Patterns:
Nocturne DK
We have two new Nocturne patterns available for free on our website.
The Waffle Cowl in Nocturne DK is exceptionally soft and cozy. This cowl is worked alternating a knit round and a purl + slip-stitch round. The pattern creates a waffle or honeycomb-like fabric which is insulating and very comfortable, perfect for chilly or downright cold winter days. It is rated "Easy" and takes just two balls to make. Stay tuned for a matching mitten pattern coming soon.
The second pattern is the gorgeous Fan Shawl, also made from lovely Nocturne DK. This pattern is constructed of knitted, fan-shaped motifs to form a scalloped, triangular shawl. It is warm and eye-catching at the same time. Stitches are picked up from the previous motif and worked along as shown in the schematic. The shawl shown took exactly five balls to make, but we suggest getting six balls to be safe.
If you have not already, check out the Eyelet Knit Scarf in Nocturne Aran, featured in the last Purls newsletter.

Indie Knitting News:
Scarves & Such in Mini Mochi, Mochi Plus & Sausalito
We all like to keep our necks stylishly warm, especially now in the heart of the winter months. There are three new designs in Crystal Palace available from the indie designers.
Like the many other dazzling designs from Ursa Major Knits, the latest creation, La La Lu, does not disappoint. This pattern is knitted in Mini Mochi color 304 "Bodega Bay". The braided modular, design is striking with the slow stripes of Mini Mochi.
Sir Thomas by Jolie Elder is a unique entrelac scarf made in Mochi Plus 617 "Seaview". The natural-forming rippled edge mimics the mighty sea itself. Each block has a reverse Stockinette stitch block embossed in the center. This scarf is great-looking in this color way, but it would be equally as fabulous in any of the other 30+ shades we offer. The unisex design and extensive color range of Mochi Plus make it a great choice for man or woman. It takes four balls to make. Cabaletta by Kyle William is hot off the indie virtual press. This exquisite cowl is made with a combination of Mini Solid and Sausalito. The designer writes, "Inspired by the architecture at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, Cabaletta pairs a repeating geometric with a multi-color background. It's a symphony of pattern that's entertaining to knit! The dance of color comes from Crystal Palace Sausalito. Because this yarn is made of two plies, the color shifts are gentle and constant. Taking time to lock each float helps to ensure an impeccably finished piece. This little cowl stores nicely in a bag and promises to come to the rescue on chilly evenings." It is rated intermediate and takes one ball of each yarn to make.

Indie Crochet News:
Sea Urchin in Sausalito
Crystal Palace Sausalito is used in Sea Urchin, a beautiful crocheted slouch-type hat available in the new book Rustic Modern Crochet by Yumiko Alexander (Interweave Press). The hat is simple and stylish. The gathered crown and star motif at the top add extra interest. Sausalito is an excellent choice for crochet. The project uses two balls to make. I cannot wait to make one (or three!) myself.

We Have Winners!
We held a contest earlier this month to launch the new Nocturne DK and Aran yarns, and it was a great success. Participants told us their favorite color of Nocturne, if they preferred DK or Aran, and what they each might make with Nocturne.
Congratulations to Ellen Gaynor! She was the Grand Prize winner and proud recipient of 4 balls of Nocturne + a 9" single-pointed bamboo needle.
Due to the excellent response, we awarded four runner-up prizes of 2 balls of Nocturne. Congratulations to Pat C., Linda M., Shirley N. and Loretta!
