Upcoming Yarn Events
Greetings!

August and September are exciting months here at Crystal Palace.  This is the time when we start receiving all the fun new yarns and colors for fall, sending them out to shops and developing our pattern support for the upcoming season.  We just received new colors of Kid Merino and Moonshine, and we have added new free and indie patterns to our website.  Are you interested in learning crochet?  In addition to continually adding knitting patterns to our site, we have been working hard lately to develop our beginner and intermediate level crochet pattern offerings online as well.

Be sure to check out the schedule of yarn events that CPY is sponsoring, too, including yarn crawls in Colorado, San Diego and Arizona.

Sincerely,

Cathy Campbell

Kid Merino & Moonshine: New Colors

New colors of Kid Merino and Moonshine have just arrived, and they are gorgeous!

Kid Merino Fall 2013 colors
We have added 6 new solid colors to the Kid Merino range: 200 "Snow White", 6021 "Basil", 6022 "Pink Lilacs", 6023 "Periwinkle", 6024 "Petunia" and 6025 "Passion Purple".   Kid Merino is a superfine, lace-weight, kid mohair/merino blend that is wispy soft and very affordable. It can be used alone for gorgeous, feather-light designs or carried along with another yarn to add softness and mohair quality to a project. We have free and indie Kid Merino patterns online, including the Sweet Alyssum Shawl and the Kid Merino and Little Flowers Cowl.

We have added two new vibrant prints to the already dazzling Moonshine collection: 514 "Galaxy" and 515 "Tango".  These shades were inspired by the spirit and excitement of the nightlife. Moonshine is a worsted-weight blend of nylon, kid mohair, wool and metallic fiber.  It can be used for many elegant projects, like the Albedo Shawl by Jolie Elder.

FREE Knit Pattern: Gold Rush Slouch Hat
Gold Rush Treasure Slouch Hat

The Treasure Slouch Hat in Gold Rush is new on our website.  It features a k1 x p1 ribbed edge with eyelet rib body.  It's longer length gives it a modern slouch look.  The soft, brushed wool and strong cotton core offer comfort while the sparkle of the metallic flecks give the hat extra pizazz.  It takes two balls to make.

FREE Crochet Pattern: Long Chunky Mochi Cowl

Chunky Mochi Long Crocheted Cowl
We have added a new, crocheted cowl pattern made in super cozy Chunky Mochi.  The Long Crochet Cowl is a longer version of the Quick & Easy Crochet Cowl featured in the June issue of Purls.  Long, bulky cowls are very hot right now, and this pattern works up quickly and is great for beginner and experienced crocheters alike.  I cannot wait to make one for myself.  Hmmm...what color will it be?

Be on the lookout for a crocheted Mochi Plus cowl coming soon!
Indie Knitting News: FREE Little Lamb Hat

Cuddles DK Lamb Hat
The most recent addition to the Crystal Palace Indies is the adorable Knit Little Lamb Hat designed by Amy Gaines in Cuddles DK.  We were inspired by Amy's knit and crochet amigurumi on Ravelry and Etsy, so we decided to send her some Cuddles DK to see what she would make.  And oh what she made!

I love this pattern.  It is adorable, affordable and fun to knit up.  The best part about this pattern is that it is FREE!

Indie Crochet News: Vashti Braha

Stitchmerge in Mochi Plus Vashti Braha is an award-winning independent crochet designer who, lucky for us, loves the Crystal Palace Mochis.  We have recently added four of her patterns to the indie section using Mini Mochi and Mochi Plus

Vashti's patterns are excellent learning patterns.  At the beginning of each pattern, she breaks down the skills needed and the pattern construction into easy-to-understand terms.  This approach to pattern writing helps take away the apprehension that new crocheters may have in tackling a pattern.   She includes in each of these four patterns a list of skills one will obtain by completing the project.  This is an excellent feature that I have not seen in many patterns.

Orbit Cowl Oh, how we love those one-ball projects!  Stitchmerge (above) is an Easy-rated crocheted cowl that uses one ball of Mochi Plus.  It features a technique using single crochet that produces a double-sided fabric.  This is a good, quick project that will help you advance your crochet skills.

The Orbit Cowl (right) in Mochi Plus is quite fun and is also rated as Easy.  It is "a warm and versatile cowl that can be rolled, folded, scrunched, and stretched for several fashionable looks," writes the  designer.  "It's fast and easy to crochet: work only into every other stitch in a spiral. This means no turning, no joining rounds, no counting stitches! If you use a self-striping yarn (shown), you can let the yarn do the work."  The Orbit Cowl takes three balls to make.

Undaria Scarf in Mini Mochi If you are ready for the next level in crochet, then try the Undaria Scarf and Slip Tectonics, both rated Intermediate.  The Undaria Scarf (right) is a ruffly, slip-stitch, crocheted scarf using short rows.  It uses one to two balls of Mini Mochi with a large hook for fast completion.  Slip Tectonics also uses Mini Mochi and is an excellent pattern to use to learn slip stitching.  Though rated intermediate, Vashti's skill description is encouraging to anyone interested in this technique, even to the the advanced beginner.
