Saturday October 27 john santos 2
California Institute of Integral Studies presents
Not in Our Name: Dia de Los Muertos Concert with
The John Santos Sextet
plus special guests, poet Genny Lim
and spoken word artist Rico Pabón

"Perhaps the most innovative Latin Jazz group playing today outside Cuba...highly innovative, intimately explosive." ~ East Bay Express

The acknowledgement and honoring of the ancestors is fundamental in African, Indigenous and Asian cultures. Not in Our Name is a call to spiritual arms, as we ask for the blessings and assistance of our ancestors in defense of their beloved home, the planet Earth. This concert is a direct response to the current rampant destruction of the environment in the name of capitalist progress.

The Fountain Project was originally formed in June 2001 and became incorporated and non-profited in 2005. The Fountain Project Foundation, Inc. is a group of volunteers from Eastern and Western traditions of medicine. They take one Sunday every other month to go to a monastery in Northern California and provide to the local residents, the nuns and monks, and students from grades K through 12. These residents usually have no medical insurance and do not receive welfare assistance. We treat anyone who comes to seek medical services. We are currently seeking partnership with other communities to expand our medical and health education outreach.

The volunteer group usually consists of medical doctors, chiropractors, surgeons, optometrists, dentists, physical therapists, exercise instructors, massage therapists, nurses, medical assistants, acupuncturists, acupressure therapist and herbalists. These volunteers not only treat illnesses, but also educate the community on preventative care and general well being.

Concurrent with the medical services, another group of volunteers goes to the community to lend assistance to repair work on the buildings and grounds.

The Fountain Project Foundation is looking in the future to start a healing and retreat center for everyone to be able to go and relax, exercise, meditate, and to rid the body of stress and illness. The Retreat Center will be built in the style of a traditional Chinese four sided courtyard house with a large practice hall, meditation area, dormitories for men and women, and a treatment center to enhance our medical outreach.

Thursday November 1 robert glasper
SFJazz Presents
The Robert Glasper Experience
@ The Palace of Fine Arts

Pianist and composer Robert Glasper is on a mission to reconcile modern jazz with hip hop and R&B. And his latest Blue Note recording,Black Radio, is a bold manifesto. The album is an incisive commentary on urban music, weaving together the disparate strands of a career that took off shortly after he migrated from Houston to New York City in the mid-90s. Glasper became a go-to keyboardist for some of the era's defining hip hop and R&B stars, touring as music director for Mos Def and appearing with Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jay-Z and Maxwell. At the same time, Glasper made a name for himself as an insightful post-bop pianist through stints with jazz masters such as Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove and Terence Blanchard. He's released a series of accomplished sessions, including 2009's Double Booked, which contrasted his acoustic straight-ahead trio tracks with the slinky, plugged-in funk of the Experiment - a telepathic ensemble featuring saxophonist and vocalist Casey Benjamin, bassistDerrick Hodge and influential drummer Chris "Daddy" Dave. Standing in for Dave on this date is the phenomenal Mark Colenburg. Poised to become the next instrumental superstar, Robert Glasper is truly the sound of now.

A SOULFUL NIGHT OF KEYS with Lonnie Liston Smith, Mark Adams and Brian Jackson

Live CD Recording - Video Steele Jazz

To Purchase Tickets Click Here

Some of the best jazz piano of the past half century, crafted by three generations of top-shelf artists: Lonnie Liston Smith (Pharaoh Sanders / Miles Davis), Mark Adams (Roy Ayers, Ron Carter) & Brian Jackson (Gil Scott-Heron).

Band Lineup:
Lonnie Liston Smith  --  Keyboards
Brian Jackson  --  Keyboards
Mark Adams  --  Keyboards
William "Bill" White  --  Guitar
Trevor Allen  --  Bass
Lee Pearson  --  Drums

Like most jazz artists, keyboardist Mark Adams is a creature of the night - an artist who hits his creative stride in the late hours, when other soulful cats just like him emerge from the shadows and fill the night air with a groove that is sometimes lyrical, sometimes edgy and always compelling.

This year, Adams and veteran keyboardists Brian Jackson and Lonnie Liston Smith continue their sweep of the jazz landscape on the "Soulful Night of Keys" tour - a trip that started in the U.S. in the fall of 2011 and headed for Europe in July 2012. The tour showcases a combined legacy of ten decades of talent from three of the most enduring names in contemporary jazz. A live CD and DVD, both recorded in New York City, have been released in conjunction with the tour.

"There's a camaraderie about this tour that's reminiscent of the heyday of jazz - back when it was commonplace for guys like Charlie Parker and Sonny Stitt to play together, and Bud Powell was best friends with Thelonius Monk," says Adams. "They were never in competition with each other. That cooperative, creative spirit of jazz is what we've recaptured on this tour. We just get up there and play together, without trying to see which of us can be faster or slicker than the other. We just play what we feel and we do our best to be true to the music."

I have a pair of tickets to give away to the Thursday 10pm show - Tell me what you love about the piano to jazz and email me to win.

Oakland Public Conservatory of Music presents

Honoring Ed Kelly

A Visual and Musical Tribute to an Oakland Treasure

featuring pianist Michelle Rosewoman  and visual artist and muralist James Gayle

To Purchase Tickets

Ed Kelly was a professor of music at Laney College for over 25 years and mentored scores of developing musicians at jazz camps and workshops. Pharoah Sanders, a close friend and musical collaborator of Kelly's summed up his life this way: "He's a genius and a great person. He could  have been a superstar if he wanted, but he chose to help other musicians here. I'm one of them. He's why I'm here."

james gayles To celebrate his life and the principles he lived by, Angela Wellman, founding director of OPC, commissioned award-winning visual artist, James Gayles, to create a mural that celebrates Kelly's life in music in Oakland, the city he loved and to which he dedicated his work in music. Gayles is the recipient of a City of Oakland Cultural Arts grant with which he created "JazzMasters," a work created to pay tribute to Oakland's Local Jazz musicians who gained world recognition. Having relocated from New York, Gayles was unfamiliar with the Bay Area music scene. He  solicited the help of the very knowledgeable KPFA and KCSM jazz DJ Greg Bridges who told him, "Oh man, you got to do Ed Kelly". Gayles says he soon discovered that Kelly was "a legendary giant who influenced and mentored generations of great musicians to come out of the Bay Area. He was an extraordinary musician and educator who possessed the talent to become an international star, but chose to stay in Oakland to raise his family rather than go out on the road.  Countless young Bay Area musicians were the beneficiaries of that decision. Ed Kelly was indeed an Oakland treasure and I am honored to be a part of this well deserved tribute."

Gayles, an Emmy award winning artist who studied at the Pratt Institute with Jacob Lawrence, says he hopes to create an emotional spark in those who view his work by capturing, "...the power and emotion, the essence of the human." The portrait will be unveiled before the evening of music begins.

Michelle Rosewoman, an Oakland native and internationally celebrated musician, is the featured guest michele rosewoman artist. With more than 30 years performing, Rosewoman stands out as a visionary pianist, composer, bandleader and gifted performer. She attributes her traditionally rooted but wide open vision of music to the time she spent studying with Ed Kelly. Rosewoman, now based in New York City, has played with Jimmy Heath, Billy Hart, Celia Cruz, Reggie Workman, Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, James Spaulding,  Paquito D'Rivera, Gary Bartz, Rufus Reid, Howard Johnson, Carlos Ward, Andy Gonzalez, Pedro Martinez and many, many more. She flies into Oakland with great joy to honor her teacher, Ed Kelly. Of her participation Rosewoman remarked, "I am really so pleased that you asked me to be part of this honoring of my mentor and my love, Ed--and that I can contribute to your efforts at this school. Looking forward to everything."

Ed Kelly Hall is located in the Oakland Public Conservatory
of Music in downtown Oakland, CA, 1616 Franklin St.

Dj Jeremiah Farewell Celebration

@ Brick and Mortar Music Hall

To Purchase Tickets Click Here

After more than a decade in San Francisco, DJ Jeremiah is moving on to the bright lights of an even bigger city - New York, New York.

A native of Liberia, Jeremiah Kpoh experienced great tragedy at an early age, losing both parents at age 12 amidst a protracted military conflict between two tribal warlords, who wreak ed havoc on neighboring villages. Kpoh's mother and father both fell victim to the civil war, and young Jeremiah found himself an orphan, eking out a meager existence in a refugee camp in the Ivory Coast. It was there that he first became introduced to Fela Kuti and other Afrobeat/Afropop groups and started DJing, playing music on cassette for his fellow refugees, providing a glimmer of hope in a hopeless situation. That experience taught Jeremiah to be strong, and to stay positive, no matter how bleak things might seem. It also affirmed the healing power of music for him.

After relocating to San Francisco, in 2002, Jeremiah met fellow African expat Sila, and began to further his DJ career, playing at local venues and starting a production company, Maisha Productions, which produced numerous humanitarian benefit shows for NGOs benefitting refuges in Africa and Haiti and created the annual Afrofunk Festival. Establishing himself as one of SF's most in-demand world beat DJs, Jeremiah became known as "Mr. Afrobeat," and opened up shows for the likes of Salif Keita, Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Alpha Blondy and Konono No. 1.

"I am deeply indebted to the people of San Francisco and the Bay Area for supporting me all these years, for coming to Maisha shows and my club nights, and helping to make me the person I am today. I am very sad to leave here, but I need to pursue my dream and move forward in life. I will never forget all the smiles and laughter you have shared with me." Jeremiah said. "In particular, I want to thank all the booking agents and promoters who I've worked with: Allen Scott and Bryan Duquette (The Independent /Another Planet Entertainment); Michael O' Connor and Jason Perkins (Brick and Mortar/New Parish); Guy Carson (Café Du Nord); and Dennis Ring and Matt Shapiro (Elbo Room). I couldn't have done it without you."

For over 70 years, Cubas most venerable charanga orchestra, the Orquesta Aragn, has been the cornerstone of Cuban culture, pioneering the indelible sound of the cha-cha-ch during the 1950s and evolving over the years while staying true to its roots. On Saturday, November 3rd, the Jazzschool and SFJAZZ Education are proud to co-present an intimate master class with the members of the group as they share the extraordinary legacy of Cuban popular music and highlight the infectious rhythms that have echoed around the globe. Pianist, author, musicologist and SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleon will host the program, which will include Q&A. Participants are encouraged to bring claves, maracas and other small percussion and are welcome to play, sing, dance and experience the full immersion into the joyous world of Afro-Cuban music. Dwight Trible

@ Yoshis SF

Many jazz musicians will tell you that they prefer not to work with singers, because most jazz singers lack the ability to improvise, have no understanding of musicianship, nor any of the other traits associated with making jazz music - one of the most interesting and exciting musical genres today.  Dwight Trible is a singer who combines the best of vocal virtuosity with musicianship and improvisational skills to the delight of audiences and musicians alike. In addition to performing with his own group, the Dwight Trible Ensemble, Dwight is the vocalist with the Pharaoh Sanders Quartet and is also the vocal director for the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan Peoples' Arkestra.

Not a newcomer to the music scene, Dwight has worked with such notables as Oscar Brown Jr., Charles Lloyd, Billy Childs, Kenny Burrell, Kenny Garrett, Steve Turre, Harold Land, Harry Belafonte, Della Reese and Norman Conners, John Beasley, Patrice Rushen, Babatunde Lea, Ernie Watts, Kahlil El Zabar, as well as contemporary soul artist like LA Reid and DJ Rogers. Dwight's collaborations with Horace Tapscott, Billy Higgins, Kamau Daaood and others have produced some of the finest musical moments in Los Angeles in recent years - and his best is yet to come.

Like his mentors, Dwight is not content to use his music just to entertain people, although he is quite a dynamic performer. He uses his music to bring people together, to bridge the gap between the races, and to heal the human heart. He has received numerous awards for his humanitarian efforts.

Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band
@ Yoshis SF

If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez's music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling.

Saturday November 10 lavay smith
SF Jazz Presents
Lavay Smith & the Red Hot Skillet Lickers
@ YBCA Forum

San Francisco vocalist Lavay Smith brings a touch of the blues to everything she sings. Now, the sensuous chanteuse and her hard-swinging band work their alchemy on a program that explores the real Kansas City sound. As a wide-open town that served as a hub for territory bands crisscrossing the Midwest in the 1930s, Kansas City boasted one of the nation's formative jazz scenes, eventually giving rise to the famed big bands of Jay McShann and Count Basie. Backed by her ever grooving Skillet Lickers, with some of the Bay Area's best musicians, Smith interprets the bawdy and uproariously swinging blues made famous by clarion vocalists like Big Joe Turner and Jimmy Rushing. The Skillet Lickers are led by pianist, arranger and founding member Chris Siebert, a bona fide authority on swing, jazz and blues. The band also features Danny Armstrong, a tremendous trombonist and singer, and ferocious saxophone battles between Robert Stewart and Jules Broussard, the latter a Bay Area jazz hero since the 1960s. Like several other artists in this 30th Anniversary Festival, Lavay Smith has appeared with SFJAZZ many times across the decades.
