"Perhaps the most innovative Latin Jazz group playing today outside Cuba...highly innovative, intimately explosive." ~ East Bay Express

San Francisco, Oct 12, 2012 - Saturday October 27 the California Institute of Integral Studies presents Not in Our Name: Dia de Los Muertos Concert featuring the John Santos Sextet with special guests, poet Genny Lim and spoken word artist Rico Pabón at the Brava Theater. The acknowledgement and honoring of the ancestors is fundamental in African, Indigenous and Asian cultures. Not in Our Name is a call to spiritual arms, as we ask for the blessings and assistance of our ancestors in defense of their beloved home, the planet Earth. This concert is a direct response to the current rampant destruction of the environment in the name of capitalist progress.

About John Santos

Five-time Grammy nominee and USA Fontanals Fellow, John Santos, and his stellar Sextet shed light on the historical and cultural significance of Latin Jazz, as well as its aesthetic characteristics pertaining to instrumentation, rhythm, interpretation and improvisation. Organized in 2003, they specialize in educational presentations from lecture/demonstrations to detailed clinics focusing on any number of relevant subjects such as composition, arrangement, rhythmic development, stylistic interpretation, studio performance, etc. Their repertoire consists of exciting arrangements from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the US, as well as original compositions. Their first CD, Papa Mambo, was released on John's Machete Records label in the summer of 2007. Their second CD, Perspectiva Fragmentada, was released in October, 2008. Equally at home with a dance or concert repertoire, the John Santos Sextet presents a wide range of styles and rhythms for audiences of all ages.

The Creole nature of Latin jazz-and Caribbean culture in general-is in many ways a template for diversity, respect, and understanding for the entire planet. It tells an urgent story that is a beautiful testament to human perseverance, but it is not a pretty story. Genocide, slavery, apartheid, and continued colonial mentality are the results of the American experiment and clash of cultures. Identities lost and found also epitomize American history and are the basis of great turmoil and passion for the individual and collective mind. The Caribbean region plays a central role in American history, reminding us that it is the heart of the Americas both historically and culturally.

The Afro-Latin music that emanates from the Caribbean is a powerful manifestation of self-determination and education within working-class communities. This series is based on the music of the Spanish-speaking Antilles-music that documents and embodies the American saga as well as any.
