First-Ever Funders Institute:
Funders Together is Heading to D.C

We're wrapping up registration for our inaugural Funders Institute and were excited to be bring funders and guests from across the United States and Canada together to engage in conversation about catalytic, outcomes-focused philanthropy, and funders' roles in systems change. The Funders Institute interactive events, expert speakers, and a unique way to connect with other funders and special guests.

Bryan Samuels, Commissioner at the Administration for Children Youth and Families at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will deliver a keynote address emphasizing why homelessness matters to Health and Human Services and what the priorities are, the ways in which HHS is a partner in ending homelessness, and the importance of working with philanthropy to end homelessness.

Throughout the course of our Institute events, you'll learn more about the role of philanthropy in systems change and advocacy, participate in interactive discussions on population-specific issues (including youth, family, veteran, and chronic homelessness), and hear from our expert panel on best practices and where philanthropy has the potential to impact the greatest future change. We'll see you this month in Washington D.C.!

Welcome to Angela Day,

Our New Policy and Advocacy Intern

Funders Together is pleased to announce a new addition to the Funders Together staff. Angela Day brings a background in non-profit management and homeless human service to her position of Policy and Advocacy Intern. Much of Angela's career has been dedicated to homelessness and mental health. Throughout her career she has acquired over 10 years experience working with marginalized populations, managed a 'low-threshold' permanent supportive housing portfolio, and created housing programs specific to the homeless population. Angela joins us from the Graduate School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University. Throughout her Master's degree program she has focused her research and coursework on the areas of housing and homelessness. Angela will be focusing primarily on supporting our Advocacy platform as well as completing related research, and she'll be joining us in Washington D.C. in July. Please join us in welcoming Angela to our team.

Sharon McDonald of National Alliance to End Homelessness Blogs: LGBT Homeless Youth: Support Through Data Collection

Data on youth homelessness is notoriously lacking. However, we estimate that around 550,000 youth under the age of 25 are homeless and on their own at some point each year. Most of these young people will experience brief episodes of homelessness. Others will experience longer episodes of homelessness and require more significant support. While it's still unclear whether youth who identify as LGBT... Read More.

Interagency Council Releases Report:

Opening Doors: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness sets the goal of ending homelessness for all veterans by the end of 2015. The 2012 Point in Time Count reported that, as a nation, there has been a 17% reduction in total number of homeless Veterans since 2009. While some communities have reported small reductions or even increases in the total number of

Veterans experiencing homelessness, other communities have reported remarkable success. USICH has identified five communities that...

Many homeless youth do not have a high school diploma for a variety of reasons, such as frequent moves between home and school, significant life stress, and a lack of family support. Without a basic education, homeless youth are at risk of limited employment opportunities and poverty during their adult lives. Yet despite experiencing homelessness, some youth are able to continue participating in school, demonstrating resilience. Educational resilience refers to continuing education despite adverse circumstances, such as homelessness... Download the Chapter Summary of this Report to learn more.
