Mourou is a lawyer and a noted Islamic Scholar, and currently serves as a Vice President of the ruling Nahdha Party in Tunisia. He was one of the Founding members of the Islamic Tendency Movement in Tunisia in 1981, and then was imprisoned and exiled for many years under the Bourguiba and Ben Ali regimes.
He is considered one of the most moderate Islamic thinkers and leaders in the Arab World today, always arguing for moderation, modernity, democracy, and reconciliation between all Tunisians.
