Registration is open for the 2016 Children's Art & Literacy Festival in downtown Abilene! This event draws nearly 4,000 people and is the largest collaboration of its kind for children in the Big Country. New this year is a Glow Dance Party on ArtWalk night of the CALF on  Thursday, June 9. This will take place at the Abilene Civic Center after we unveil the sculpture based on the Mark Teague illustrated book "How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?" We have lots of fun events planned for the festival, and we hope you can join us! All events Thursday night are free; festival passes are required for Friday and Saturday, June 10-11. New this year is Group Day on Thursday to accommodate our growing number of groups.
Check out all the events happening in May in our arts calendar, including the "Back in the Saddle" themed ArtWalk that's sure to have folks boot scootin' all over downtown!

Library celebrating comics, manga, anime, more at Lib-Con

The Abilene Public Library is celebrating the third annual Lib-Con, a mini convention celebrating comic books, manga, anime and more. Last year's event hit record numbers. Multiple activities taking place at all three library locations. MAY 2-7

Preservation League honors Sayles Ranch Guesthouses

The Abilene Preservation League will honor Terry and Laura Browder, who own the Sayles Ranch Guesthouses, at the annual Heritage Stewardship Awards Luncheon at the Hunter Welcome Center at Abilene Christian University. It's not just a story about a love for old houses - it's a story about community pride and economic development! MAY 5

Philharmonic explores music from a galaxy far, far away

The music of discovery, adventure and courage -- Star Wars and science fiction movie fans of every age will enjoy the powerful sounds that helped build these forceful myths set in the future. Bring your lightsaber and enter their audience trivia contest. MAY 7

Free Celebration Singers concert explores 'All About Feelings'

Enjoy a great evening of music with Celebration Singers are their annual spring concert at the Paramount Theatre. This year's concert is themed "All About Feelings." Free admission. Directed by Betty Ann Blackburn. Hosted by Dr. Larry McGraw.  MAY 10

ArtWalk aims to put you 'Back in the Saddle' 

This month, wear your scootin' boots and come downtown to enjoy the Western Heritage Parade and street dance. See new exhibits, do crafts, shop and eat downtown. ArtWalk is a monthly mini-festival hosted by the Center for Contemporary Arts.

Opening reception for new Center exhibits

Come dressed in your funkiest Texas "gittup" for exhibits in all galleries at the Center for Contemporary Arts. Opening reception is 5-7 p.m. See stunning images of The Big Bend in Authentic Texas: Photography by Bill Wright in the Breed Gallery, the West Texas Photographic Society's Annual Member's Exhibition in the Bill and Alice Wright Photo Gallery, Center Artist Members Group Show: New Works in Gallery 3, and The Dirty Draw-ers Annual Exhibit in Gallery 5. 'My Fair Lady' playing at Paramount

The Paramount Film Series presents the Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison classic "My Fair Lady" about a young Cockney flower girl transformed into a poised duchess by a demanding professor. MAY 13-14

Grace exhibit explores 'Life in a Time Without Boundaries'

Since 2004, many hundreds have resettled in Abilene from Democratic Republic of Congo, Bhutan, Burundi, and other countries, discovering a welcome and safe environment to rebuild their lives. 
Artists Roger Colombik and JerolynBahm-Colombik created an installation of photography, sculpture, and text for The Grace Museum's main gallery in collaboration with the Abilene International Rescue Committee to welcome the community's newest members from across the globe. 
Stories and images composed from their personal histories form the foundation for the exhibition.

CALF welcomes Mark Teague

Award-winning author/illustrator Mark Teague, of New York, will be in Abilene for the 5th Annual Children's Art & Literacy Festival. His original artwork will be on display at the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature. Come hear Teague talk, sign books and join in the festival fun at dramatic readings, an instrument petting zoo, an animal petting zoo, art activities, magic shows, ventriloquist, face painting and more. JUNE 9-11
