Issue No. 97  |  Aug. 30, 2016

From the Desk Of:
Navy Capt. Roland Fahie, Director, ASBPO

Navy Capt. Roland Fahie, ASBP director
Greetings! Welcome to this edition of Focal Point. My sincerest thanks to Navy Vice Adm. Raquel Bono for taking the time to visit with me and the ASBP team this month. It was an honor and privilege to discuss our Legacy of Blood campaign.

A special thank you to all of the cadets who came out to Fort Knox, Ky., to support the ASBP's mission during the Cadet Summer Training blood drives. My thanks also to the hardworking personnel on the ground who planned and coordinated with our ASBP team and got those cadets to the blood drive!  This year, we collected 3,618 units of blood for ill or injured service members and their families worldwide. Your dedication to saving lives is a testament to your loyalty to our program, commitment, dedication and leadership.

To all of our donors worldwide, it is important to remember that the need for blood does not stop as the summer months wind down. I encourage you to continue the excellent work of donation and support into the fall and winter seasons. Remember, there is no substitute for human blood, and blood is perishable, therefore the need remains constant.

Once again, my personal thanks to everyone who supported the ASBP this summer.  Without you, we wouldn't be able to continually provide lifesaving blood to service members in need -- whenever and wherever, in peacetime and war. You are the ASBP!

Respectfully,
Capt. Roland Fahie

My Legacy: Air Force 2nd Lt. Katie Spencer

This summer, the ASBP celebrates the Legacy of Blood from generation to generation. For the first time, the military blood program's communications and marketing team was able to coordinate photo shoots with a service member from each service for our summer campaign. In this series, we introduce you to our five participants. We asked them to answer a series of questions, and these are their responses.

The FBI and the DEA co-sponsored a blood drive with the ASBP, July 29.  Lucy Holcomb, DEA public information officer, said the main reason they wanted to sponsor a blood drive with the ASBP was due to the fact the blood supports deployed service members and their families worldwide. Read more.

FDA Recommends Screening Blood for Zika Virus in South Florida after Reports of Local Transmission

Earlier this month, the Florida Health Department reported four local mosquito-borne cases of Zika virus in South Florida. Currently, officials believe that active transmission is occurring just north of downtown Miami. This news prompted the FDA to request that Miami-Dade and Boward Counties immediately stop collecting blood until all units can be either screened for Zika virus RNA or inactivated by an approved pathogen reduction technique.
