Navy Capt. Roland Fahie, ASBP director
Greetings! Welcome to this edition of Focal Point! To our friends in both the military and civilian blood banking communities: the Armed Services Blood Program will travel to Anaheim, Calif., later this month to participate in the 2015 AABB Annual Meeting. This is the largest international blood banking meeting that introduces and discusses new advancements in blood banking and transfusion medicine technology and research and development.  We are excited and glad to be part of this prestigious meeting. We have a workshop at the meeting on Oct. 24 that is sure to be educational and well worth a visit. Stop by and listen to our keynote speaker, Brigadier General R. Scott Dingle, Deputy Chief of Staff, G3/5/7, and get updates from all of the ASBP's Service Blood Program Offices, joint blood program officers, and program managers to find out what we are doing nationally, in theater, and what kind of efforts we are undertaking worldwide.

During the workshop, I am also honored to present this year's Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Wilbur Malloy. His military blood banking career has certainly had a transformative effect on military medicine, and for his efforts we are most grateful.

Lastly, it is my pleasure to congratulate the Defense Health Agency on achieving full operating capability earlier this month. This is truly a step forward in the right direction for all of military medicine, and the Armed Services Blood Program stands ready to take part in the DHA's future.

To our donors, volunteers, supporters and friends: thank you! To our staff members worldwide: thank you! You all are the heart and soul of the Armed Services Blood Program, and we could not save lives without each and every one of you.

Respectfully,
Capt. Roland Fahie

Mary Hughes donates blood at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., Sept. 14. She traveled more than three hours to donate blood with the ASBP at the installation. Lynchburg, Va., is approximately 150 miles southwest of Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. With normal Virginia traffic, that makes it about a three hour drive, one direction. But the distance between home and the Sept. 14 ASBP blood drive at Quantico, did not stop one donor from rolling up her sleeves to save lives. Meet Mary Hughes
