Hanging out with a special friend at the 36-Hour Giving Challenge |
|
|
From the FPN Blog
Watching Florida Philanthropy in Action in Southwest Florida
Last week FPN President & CEO David Biemesderfer experienced firsthand the last few hours of the 36-Hour Giving Challenge, an amazing two-day marathon of charitable giving to benefit nonprofits in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. The second annual Challenge broke its own record by raising more than $2.78 million for 285 nonprofits. Even more impressive, the Challenge generated 17,626 donations from 50 states and 24 countries - a 65% increase in donations from last year.
The Challenge represents a growing trend in
philanthropy: a giving day where local donors and
nonprofits come together for 24 hours or more of
charitable giving, using new online technologies and
social media to reach out to donors in exciting new
ways. |

Jessie Ball duPont Fund Renews Support for Summer Youth Employment Program
The Jessie Ball duPont Fund awarded $413,756 to the United Way of Northeast Florida to support the JAX JOBS summer jobs program for youth through summer 2014. A collaboration of youth-serving nonprofits, hospitals and area businesses JAX JOBS requires
"pre-work" for both youth and potential employers to prepare them for the work experience. For youth, the preparation involves a six-week training program in basic job skills and related topics. Employers must develop job descriptions, assign projects for the youth to complete, and assign and orient coaches for each youth employee.

UnderDeveloped: A National Study of Challenges Facing Nonprofit Fundraising
A new study reveals that many nonprofits are stuck in a vicious cycle that threatens their ability to raise the resources they need to succeed. A joint project of CompassPoint and the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the report found high levels of turnover and lengthy vacancies in development director positions throughout the
nonprofit sector. More significantly, the study reveals deeper issues that contribute to instability in the development director role,
including a lack of basic fundraising systems and inadequate attention to fund development among key board and staff leaders. |
