Charitable Deduction   New Law Preserves Charitable Deduction, Extends IRA Rollover
On Jan. 1, 2013, Congress passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (H.R. 8, as amended) in a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, and President Obama signed the bill into law on Jan. 2. The new law includes no cap on charitable deductions; extends the IRA Charitable Rollover through 2013, with transition rules for 2012 contributions; sets the estate tax at a permanent rate; and reinstates the Pease Limitation on itemized deductions for higher income taxpayers.

Budget Proposal Threatens Essential Work of Charities
In a recent op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel, David Odahowski, president & CEO of the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation and a member of FPN's board, called for preserving the charitable deduction. "In this game of political trade-offs and deal making, some think we can no longer afford the charitable deduction," Odahowski wrote. "The reality is that we can't afford to lose it and should instead consider expanding it."

Voices of Florida Philanthropy Leadership: Leading Change

Belinda Lawrence    How to Distinguish Insoluble Programs From Great Opportunities? Start by Listening
At the end of 2012, Florida Philanthropic Network bid farewell to a valued board member when Belinda Turner Lawrence retired as vice president and chief administrative officer for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, where she had worked since 1997. Lawrence left us with some wise words about how philanthropy leaders can be successful in embracing change. Among her advice: "Listen empathically. Be present and balanced. Articulate the counter-argument. Consider another's perspective." The entire blog post is well worth reading.

Debra Jacobs    How The Patterson Foundation Builds Strong Ties to Charities
The Patterson Foundation's approach to developing strong partnerships with its grantees was spotlighted in The Chronicle of Philanthropy's recent Making Change podcast interview with Debra Jacobs, the foundation's president & CEO. The foundation makes a deliberate effort to treat grantees as partners in promoting social change and helps give them tools and training to advance their missions. "It is through and with other people that we actually create change," Jacobs says. "We can't create change alone."

> Florida Ranks No. 34 in America's Health Rankings for 2012
Florida remains a relatively unhealthy state according to the United Health Foundation's 2012 America's Health Rankings, ranking No. 34 - well below the midpoint - the same ranking as the previous year. According to the report, Florida's three biggest health challenges are the high rate of uninsured in the state's population (20.2%), which is near the bottom (No. 46) among all states; its low high school graduation rate (No. 44), which is a vital contributor to health; and the variation in overall mortality rates among the counties within the state (No. 48).
