Greetings!

This is Craig Sutton with the August 2014 Costa Rica fishing report, and it is bursting with big Billfish backed up by badass bottom fish!

The flagship Wanderer leads the way with a pair of MASSIVE Marlin releases.

Master Captain William has the hunting instincts of a bloodhound and First Mate Alex ain't scared when with the big boys come calling.

The Wanderer continues to raise the bar for quality, safety, and results for all charter boats.

Close behind was the new battleship Discoverer with the unstoppable Captain David at the helm and Mate Kevin in the cockpit.

The Discoverer scored lots of Marlin and Sails backed up with Roosters and Mahi for a picture-perfect month.

We've pulled the Discoverer from the water to get a jump-start on her offseason maintenance.

The new 31-foot weapon has already made her mark on this fishery, and we have high hopes for a banner season in 2015.

Likewise the Explorer with Captain Carlos and the Adventurer with Captain Fico have blazed new trails for extreme panga fishing.

Check out their catches from this month...the Explorer and Adventurer prove that you don't need a big boat to score big fish in Costa Rica!

We are closing out our season in a few weeks, but like always it looks like we will end the season with a BANG! Reports are already coming in from legendary anglers like Charlie Phillips and the Gerzeny Family that will really get your blood pumping...Remember you can always check the FishingNosara Blog for daily catch updates.

The holiday season is already booking up fast so don't miss out on your chance to fish the best boats in all of Costa Rica. Call me anytime so we can get you booked.

Tight Lines y Pura Vida!

Catch of the Month - July 24, 2014

Dominic Licardi brought his hard-fishin' crew down from West Palm Beach, FL and they logged three solid days of fishing on the mighty Wanderer.

After two patient days of trolling, the highlight of their trips came on June 24:

This Blue Marlin is estimated at 400lbs. and she put up everyone ounce of fight she could muster.

Earlier in the week this South Florida team also notched a pair of Sailfish releases, backed up by a few nice Yellowfin Tunas.

Great work by Captain William and First Mate Alex on the famous flagship!

The Adventurer is a no-holds-barred fishing machine; this 23-foot panga hull is armed with enough horsepower, sunshade, and rod holders to take big fish to the mat every time she hits the water.

Near the end of June, Boca Raton's own Jim Baldwin signed up for 6.5 hours on the Adventurer and his investment of time was paid dividends of filets.

The hits came hard all day long, with the size of this Dorado and these Yellowfin rivaling the catches on the big boats.

We've said it a thousand times, but the big fish don't care if you have a big boat...great work by the 23-foot switchblade.

Mike LaRocca and his friends tore the fish out of the water with the 23-foot pocket knife Adventurer.

Each nabbed a Yellowfin Tuna, so there should be plenty of filets and sushi to go around.

The Adventurer welcomed Stuart Scott and his fiancee for a productive half-day of Extreme Panga Fishing. The strikes came in pairs, with a duo of Yellowfin Tuna backed up by twin Yellowtail Snappers.

David Uhl and his boys got their week also gathered fish two-by-to on the Adventurer.

The inshore action was strong, yielding White Tuna, a small Dorado, and a beefy Yellowfin Tuna.

July 10 saw more great family action for the Adventurer. Check out this beefy Cubera Snapper scored from the reefs outside of Garza:

Sweet Rooster Fish score on the Adventurer a few days later for client Maciek Sabodacha. The 23-footer stayed inshore and nabbed this handsome fellow:

As usual, this fish was released after the photo. But don't think these boys didn't get any filets:

This nice Snapper will make for a festive dinner for sure...Great work!

The reefs were fruitful again with this beefy Amberjack. Look at the color on this beauty:

Captain Fico finished of the month of July in style with a full calandar and full fishboxes:

This father son duo enjoyed a sweet Yellowfin Tuna, then a few days later Fico doubled the feat and added a massive Amberjack.

Recently the Adventurer welcomed Arturo for a little company research and they filled the icebox with a combined 80lbs. of Amberjack.

Great catches by the sneaky pocket knife Adventurer and Captain Fico!

Captain Carlos has propelled the 26-foot Explorer to new height since taking over command in May.

His performance on the smaller Adventurer over the last year opened our eyes Captain Carlos' skill on the water, and he is the natural choice to continue the tradition of Extreme Panga Fishing.

Captain Fico (right) still plies his craft as one of the best Mates in Garza Bay, and combined with Captain Carlos' legendary skills, the Explorer can not be stopped!

On July 17 our friend John Garris had a blast on the Explorer with the dynamic brother duo of Captain Carlos and Mate Kevin. Joined by Jeff Grosshandler, they scored a pair of Sailfish releases backed up by a nice Dorado.

Over the next week Captain Carlos stayed active on the Explorer with excellent catches of Rock Snapper, Yellowfin Tuna and Cubera Snapper.

The Explorer consistently proves that you don't need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica.

Another rare and elusive Queen Snapper was scored by the Super panga on July 23. These tasty critters only come through our area once every few seasons so we are pumped to have these in the spread.

Captain Carlos scored huge in late July with a quartet of Sailfish releases backed up with nice White Tunas on ice.

The Explorer has been white hot this year and while the rest of the boats are eying their September vacation, the barroom brawler is looking forward to a great 'off-season' of continued action.

Excellent work from the new crew of the baddest panga you've ever seen: the fearless Explorer

Captain David is the fastest rising superstar in Garza Bay and has accepted the promotion to FishingNosara's newest piece of artillery, the 31-foot Discoverer.

Captain David tapped Mate Kevin (right) to stick by his side in the cockpit of the new vessel; even though he is our youngest boatman, Kevin has already shown flashes of greatness as he continues to hone his craft.

There hasn't been this much excitement around here since the launch of the venerable flagship Wanderer, and we know that Captain David has his sights set on the title of Best in the Bay.

Garza Bay was rocked by a unusual swell event on July 6, which meant we had to pull all the boats from the water and wait for the waves to calm down.

Florida anglers Ken Cox and John Benton had to wait a day to kick-off their fishing expedition, but once the swell passed we were back on the water!

They got off to a quick start with a nice Sailfish release on July 7.

Also check out this wonderful Roosterfish release:

They followed up with some nice Yella Fellas for the ice box. "Just ate a pound of raw tuna. Like eatin butter," said John. "Awesomest day of fishing ever."

Things boiled over on July 9 when a Marlin hit the baits and put on a fireworks show for Ken Cox.

Also, Captain David made life miserable for the local Sailfish population, much to his clients' delight. Check out this array of bad Sails:

Nice fish-handling by Mate Kevin means that these released monsters will be back for more action really soon.

The Discoverer scored this nice Dorado; almost as green as the inshore water in the background

.

Great year by Captain David! Between his time on the Explorer and Discoverer he released over 225 Sailfish and 35 Marlin this year.

The Discoverer is on the rise and we can't wait to see what she does next season!

The mighty Wanderer is the FishingNosara flagship and has earned the title of the top boat in the bay.

The Master Captain William brings decades of experience on these waters and the Super Mate Alex has pioneered new tactics that have turned the world of fishing in Garza on its head.

Together they have built a spotless rep for quality, safety, and results that can not be topped.

Erica Greiner's Sailfish release from last month was certainly a huge accomplishment, but check out this incredible video delivered by Adam Greiner of the catch and release:

Certainly this clip will be part of our next DVD release!

On July 2 Jacksonville's own Kirk Wurster broke the ice on a full week of fishing with this bucket-list caliber Rooster fish:

This was the first of two mighty Pez Gallos scored by the flagship.

The mighty Wanderer proves again that she is fit for all forms of fish warfare with this excellent inshore catch. As usual this fish was released after the photograph.

The next day they followed up their excellent pair of Rooster fish releases with this tasty keeper:

Kenny scored this whopping Cubera Snapper (estimated right around 30lbs.) and this feisty fish's filets are full-on fridge fillers!

They also added this nice Dorado for variety:

Kirk and Jan Wurster finished their fishing adventure on July 4 with a trip offshore; after besting Roosters and Snappers inshore the logical choice was to see what was biting in the blue water 10 miles out.

The early bite brought in this nice Dorado:

Later in the afternoon the line screamed off and Kirk belted up to battle a big Sailfish!

Excellent boat handling by Captain William kept the fight short and sweet while First Mate Alex ensured a safe release.

On July 8
the Wanderer welcomed a great Jacksonville couple named Pedro and Sherry Ramirez along with their friends and they had a very productive day inshore.

They caught a whole rainbow of reef running goodness, then topped of the day with this MONSTER Rooster Fish release:

Pedro's Posse scored big on July 12 with Sherry catching her first ever Sailfish.

Another lady who proves that Northeast Florida is home to some of the fiercest anglers on the planet.

Great send-off for Pedro's Posse on the mighty Wanderer!

On July 13 Gilles Lemay brought his sons along for a family fishing adventurer on the famous Wanderer, and their late-day trip yielded some excellent table fare.

Looks like these guys have plenty of sushi and filets in their future...Great work by the flagship!

The infamous Wanderer struck again on July 20! Clients Sebastien and Rene Bire took the blue beauty offshore for a 5 hour trip and scored a MASSIVE Blue Marlin!

The combinations of Captain William's expert boat handling and First Mate Alex' angler coordination in the cockpit spelled doom for this mighty billfish.

Released alive and well after the photos, this Blue Monster is certainly the fish of a lifetime for the Bire posse.

"This fishing trip was my first and it was amazing, got surrounded by almost 500 dolphins at first and then they got us at the right spot to bring out a 450pound Blue marlin! The team was really nice and the boat was perfect. Amazing day out, thanks FishingNosara!"

July 27 was a great day on the Wanderer for client Thomas DuPuis, who scored a pair of Sailfish.

Captain William always finds the route to Sailfish City, and First Mate Alex is accustomed to sweeping the streets for Sails. Great hunting and great releases by the mighty Wanderer!

Thomas Matthews and his family suffered a few lost fish on their inshore half day on July 31, but the mighty Wanderer knows how to bounce back from a tough start.

Late in the trip, Mrs. Matthews hooked up a monster and put on a clinic for the girls.

Check out this sweet Amberjack:

Perseverance pays people!

St. Augustine legend Dave Liebowitz joined Craig on board the mighty Wanderer and these two good ole' North Florida boys snagged a familiar exotic:

Dave has whacked many a Red Snapper in Florida, so it's fitting their distant cousin was his first catch in Costa.

This monster Cubera Snapper weighs a good 40lbs. and that means big smiles all around.

Every time we think that the Wanderer has peaked, Captain William and First Mate Alex put up another month of amazing fishing. Great work by the King of Garza Bay, the mighty Wanderer!

Nosara River Update

Javier led several great fishing campaigns at the Nosara River mouth this month, and has begun to explorer up the river and into the surf via Kayak.

Javier managed to snag this little Mangrove before it escaped into the weeds.

He also scored a nice Ciero Mackeral out past the breakers.

Of course the Rio is thriving with a wide array of creatures, including this family of brightly colored crabs.

Javier also showed the river fishing ropes to our new friend Don Anglin. This hardcore shore angler serves as the Northern California Coordinator for Heroes on the Water, which is one of our favorite organizations.

His Snook hunt began in Tamarindo (70 miles north of us) and he worked his way south looking for the perfect fishing spot; his emails to Craig during his odyssey are priceless as he battled rains, limp bait, and his own traveling party weariness of the journey.

He missed a few big Snook at the River mouth, however Javier hooked up with this MASSIVE Snook:

Despite the missed fish, Don was all smiles as he shared his day with the other Fuppernos:

Keep your chin up Don! We know that your Snook is still here, lurking, waiting for your return.

"Hi Craig,

"I know you must be a busy man with everything going on here, so thanks so much for answering all my questions before and during my stay in Nosara.  I think I made a life time friend of Javier, definatly my kind of fisherman and guy... needs work on the kayak surf landings though...Lol!!!  wish I has film rolling on that one, but hey, happens to the best of us... he also still kicked my butt fishing, so he has last laugh..."

"Love my New Fishing Nosara Hat!!!  Guys are already hitting me up about coming down to Nosara after some postings I have been doing... I'll send your way or come back with them..."

"Either way, I know I'll be back soon.."

"Thanks so much and

Pura Vida!!!"

There were other great scores from the river mouth this month:

Manual nailed this big daddy Permit (above) plus a Queen Snapper, while the famous Rasta scored this big Snook:

Javier kept up the pace with more nice reef fish:

What river report would be complete without catches from the famous Chimpy. Nice Snook as always for this Nosara legend:

Javier and the boys from Fuppernos (Friends of the River) are on point keeping the area clean.

The seasonal rains rolling through the mountains makes all the refuse roll down to the river... thankfully the Fuppernos are on the job to protect this fragile community resource.

Also some big news for all friends of the Nosara River: after much lobbying and patience the government has recognized the Boca del Rio Nosara as a certified 'Blue-Flag Zone'.

Symbolized by this new flag at the entrance, this means steep fines and possible imprisonment for nare-do-wells who dump toxins or other chemicals into the river.

This is a big step in the right direction and all the credit is due to Javier and the Fuppernos...these guys and girls understand that a clean river is vital to the future of the community and will now be protected for the next generation of river anglers:
