Catch of the Month - August 16, 2013
Amazing news from the Wanderer! The big blue beauty scored a billfish Grand Slam on August 16 with releases of Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin and Pacific Sailfish!

It was an honor to welcome our good friends Charly and Silvia back to the Wanderer; historically they have cleaned up on Yellowfin Tunas in November, but this time they came to Nosara at just the right time to snare big billfish.

Silvia's Sailfish got the party started early with the release stamped at 11:15am.
Two lines screamed off for Craig and Charly at 12:37pm as one Blue Marlin and one Black Marlin assaulted the Wanderer's spread.

Excellent fish handling by First Mate Alex in seeing to the safe release of both fish during a very hectic double hook-up.

The afternoon continued to produce strikes, but it wasn't until 4:15pm that the hook once again struck paydirt. Charly belted up to battle this Striped Marlin:

Upon release the Wanderer had scored one of the toughest feats in fishing. Amazing way to close out the 2013 season by Captain William and Super Mate Alex!

Captain David and the Explorer are in top form and the 2013 season has proven that the Super Panga's success is no fluke. With the brother tandem of Captain Carlos and Mate Kevin getting his back in the cockpit, Captain David has made a name for himself as the fastest rising star in Garza.
On August 17 the Explorer welcomed client Justin Howell for a Yellowfin Tuna hunt and Captain David sniffed out a meaty 50lbs. Yella Fella.

This monster should surely satisfy the most demanding appetite. Great catch by the super panga!
On August 18 Jim and Emilie Benevenga got their week of fishing off to a fast start on the Explorer with a beautiful Marlin release backed up by a nice Dorado.

Great fish handling by Mate Kevin ensures another safe release!

The next day Jim and Emilie released SIX Marlin on the Explorer plus a Sailfish to complete another Billfish Grand Slam for the FishingNosara team.

On August 20 Jim Dodich and his friend joined Captain David in the midst of this incredibly great week of fishing, and they reports more excellent catches on the Explorer.

Each client got a nice Pacific Sailfish, while Jim added a tasty Yellowfin Tuna for the dinner table later in the trip.

On August 21 Jim and Emile Benvegna started their final day of fishing with Captain David on a great note: another Big Black Marlin!
They followed up with a nice Sailfish:
Then these Florida anglers caught two of the nicest Dorado of the season on the Explorer. This pair of bulls are MASSIVE!

These man-sized Mahi Mahi justified the Benvegnas purchase of two FishingNosara coolers to take the filets home...one wasn't nearly enough!

Also Emilie added a tasty 15+lbs. Wahoo to add variety to the menu.
Great follow up to their awesome Marlin and Sailfish action from earlier in the week, all on the legendary Explorer!
Jim Dodich returned to the Explorer for an extra day of fishing on August 23 and this time scored a nice Big Black Marlin! Look at the shoulders on this monster:

Later they released an additional Pacific Sailfish.

Great work by the unstoppable super panga!
While most of the staff celebrated the end of the season on the Wanderer, the mighty tandem of Alejandro and Grevan of Nosara Paradise Rentals put on a billfish catching display on the Explorer that will not soon be forgotten.

They started out with a pair of nice Sailfish releases, then Alejandro closed out the season with this awesome Blue Marlin release:

With two months of maintenance looming on the horizon, it's nice to make sure that the billfish don't get lonely while our boats are on the hill. We'll be back soon!

The mighty Wanderer is the FishingNosara flagship and has earned the title of the top boat in the bay.
The Master Captain William brings four decades of fishing experience on board everytime he takes to the seas, and the Super Mate Alex has single-handedly re-imagined the sport of Pacific billfishing
Together they have built a spotless rep for quality, safety, and results that can not be topped by any boat in the area. On August 13 Joel Adler scored a magic Marlin release on the Wanderer. This beauty approached the boat around 10:40am and by 11:15am she was cleanly released.
Craig Sutton returned to the offshore bite on August 17 as Captain William guided the flagship to the scene of the prior day's Grand Slam (see catch of the month, above).
Once again the billfish were in the house as Craig released two Marlins: one Blue and one big Black!
August has been an action-packed month for the last few years, but this billfish bite is insane!

Owen West and his boys caught the fish of a lifetime on the famous Wanderer on August 20. Check out this beauty:

Of course this sweet fish was released after the photo. Great fish handling by the Wanderer's unparallelled crew of Captain William and First Mate Alex. Later in the trip they added this excellent 20lbs. Dorado for the dinner table.
The Marlin Magic of August continued on August 21.
Craig Sutton was joined by Arturo and Alejandro of Nosara Paradise Rentals on the mighty Wanderer and they posted the second Grand Slam of the Week: 2 Blue Marlin, 1 Black Marlin, and a Pacific Sailfish!
The Sailfish was first in the boat as Alejandro flexed his fishing muscles.

Around 11am two lines popped off and the Wanderer strapped in for a double Marlin battle.

Craig took hold of the Black while Arturo, Alejandro and Alex combined to fight the Blue.

Both fish were released safely and the Grand Slam was completed!
As a curtain call Craig brought in another Blue Marlin later in the day.

To quote Alejandro: "Un Increíble Día de Pesca!!!!!" (That's 'An incredible day of fishing', gringo.)

Captain William was joined by Javier and Marino of Nosara Paradise Rentals for and end-of-year Yellowfin Tuna harvest on August 25.
As we bring this epic season to a close, it's super important to remember that the most important element of FishingNosara are the people:

Check out the girth on this, the largest of the 5 Yellowfin caught:

What a great finish to the 2013 fishing season! The Wanderer has gone from the new kid on the block to the baddest boat in the bay in just 4 seasons.
All credit is due to the unbreakable spirits of Captain William Mendoza and First Mate Alex Moreno...great season boys!

August 19, 2013 - Day 496
Hey everybody!
When we left off we were looking at a fully-sprayed but still-unfinished wad of fiberglass and gelcoat; the challenge now is to get this thing looking like a proper boat!
First order of business was to lay down some texture on the floor of the boat. On factory boats the texture is usually built into the mold so the lines are geometrically perfect; since this is a rebuild we have to rely on two-inch masking tape and steady hands to get those perfect lines.

First we sanded down the original surface with 180 grit (wet), then taped it up. After a blow-off and an acetone wipe the new gelcoat would adhere both chemically and mechanically.
We brushed on activated gelcoat and quickly rolled the texture with a GlassKoter roller cover; they claim that these leave less lint behind than a standard roller, but the pictures attest that it still left some.

The second coat was required to achieve the proper 30 mil depth that we were after. We've been told that as long as you apply your second coat within 12 hours then their is no need to sand or acetone between coats.

We are confident in this approach after completing the floor, so we replicated the procedure with the fuel covering decks before moving on to the foredeck.

The foredeck was a little tricky because of the long continuous front sweep and the long reach r
required to get to the center; when working with activated gelcoat you have to move fast, so a little foresight goes a long way.
We had four ladders set up and a long-handled roller to maximize coverage to the middle of the deck.

Matty was feeling pretty confident with this texture coating by now, so he tried a little experiment on the foredeck. See that little FishingNosara vinyl sticker in the middle?

Check out the result when removed after the second texture coat:

Meanwhile, Craig and Jamaal have been fixated on the exterior appearance of the Discoverer. Craig picked out a nice pair of teak planks for the side gunwales and is scouring the southeast for two matching-grain planks for the transom.

We are aiming to match the look and functionality of the teak covering board on our current T-Craft, the Wanderer.

Also, Craig made the trip down to Showboat Custom Coatings in Pompano Beach to pick up our refitted tower. They hit it with their special SB230 coating which should make this aluminum bulletproof forever.
Lastly, our buddy Jamaal has brought his deep experience with finish sanding to bear on the outer hull.
He is wetsanding the entire hull using a 6 inch DA and progressively increasing his grits from P180 up to P1000. Here is where we are now, just after the P600 and before the P800
You can see that it is starting to shine in places, and more importantly there are no spots where the fiberglass is showing through; this means that we have achieved proper depth with the blue gelcoat.
Hopefully we'll be up the P1000 this weekend, then its on to compound and wax. Meanwhile it's time to start scheming on re-installing the bow rail, deck hardware, tower, and outrigger mounts. Stay tuned!
August 24, 2013 - Day 501 The gelcoat polishing continued this week on The Discoverer Project as Jamaal and Matt have been pouring hours into wetsanding.

It's hard to take pictures that properly illustrate the smoothness, but the reflections are beginning to tell the tale.
We started with P400 to knock down the high spots, then progressed through P600, P800, and P1000. The function of the high grit is to bring out the shine and eliminate tooling marks from the lower grits.

We are also investigating the best way to finish this thing off; we may compound it before wax or we may just wax it.

Also we have to figure out the best way to apply the bottom paint, thinking that we may have to prime with a gel-etching primer then apply the best bottom paint we can find. However we also are finally ready to start putting the boat together in other ways too. Time to swap out the fiberglass grinders for saws and drills; nice to be back in a familiar problem.
