 Greetings!

This is Craig Sutton with the August 2013 Fishing Report. The season is rapidly drawing to a close and our crews are squeezing every drop of goodness from this record-breaking campaign.

Master Captain William and Super Mate Alex of the flagship Wanderer scored seven Marlin releases this month backed up with countless Sailfish releases.

The Wanderer has cemented her reputation as the finest boat in the area and is in the conversation for the most productive boat in all of Costa Rica...you know anyone else that ran well over 200 trips this year and released 50+ Marlin?

Captain David on the legendary Explorer has also posted a record-breaking season and kept his foot on the gas this month with a trio of Marlin releases and multiple Sailfish releases.

Don't miss client Andy McGuire's report which features some of the best billfish photography (see right) we've ever had in this report...these babies are real high-flyers!

The Explorer has completely shattered expectations for a 26-foot vessel, and all the credit is due her incredible crew.

Captain Carlos on the 23-foot Adventurer discovered a school of Wahoo in the area and broke the ice for the entire team.

His multiple silver bullets showed the way for the rest of the FishingNosara boats as many clients were treated to Wahoo this month.

This month's fishing report is chock-full of goodness including news from the Nosara River and updates from The Discoverer Project...all that and more after the fishing reports.

Paula and I are heading down to Nosara today and I think the best is yet to come...August always produces big Marlin strikes, so keep an eye on the FishingNosara Blog for fresh catch updates as they happen.

We are already filling up the calendar for November and beyond so don't miss out! Call or email me and let's make your Costa Rica fishing dreams into reality.

Tight Lines y Pura Vida!

Catch of the Month - August 3, 2013

Captain Charlie Phillips of Hope Fishing Adventures in Everglades City, FL won his trip to Nosara by entering the 'Dream Boat Build' contest presented by Florida Sportsman Magazine.

After an amazing week of fun fishing, Charlie and the boys couldn't resist adding one more full day on the mighty Wanderer before returning to the States, and Capt. Phillips finally got his chance at the fish of a lifetime.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Charlie Phillips: Today was an epic end to a fantasy week for me. I battled the most noble of the billfish, the majestic Blue Marlin, and was rewarded with a photo, the hook removed and in my pocket then a successful release. One of the best days I have ever experienced on the water. And better yet we ended up two!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The second Marlin (below) came at 11am for Charlie fresh on the heels of his first (above).

Jason Kintner followed up with his own excellent Marlin release.

Charlie Phillips: "This was by far the most enjoyable vacation that myself or anyone in my group has ever experienced. Your staff is wonderful and took care of us as though we were family the entire time, something that is greatly appreciated."

"And your captains and crews are true masters of their craft. As a working captain myself, it is a true joy watching them work to make our trips a great success."

There is a reason we refer to Captain Carlos' 23-foot Adventurer as the pocket knife. In a world of extreme specialization and over-purposing, this nimble panga is a true 'catch-all' fishing platform.

For instance on July 24 the little boat that no one saw coming racked her first ever Wahoo. One of the hardest-fighting and elusive non-billfish species in our area, these silver bullets were caught by none other than newly-minted FishingNosara Hall of Famer Travis Picariello.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Why settle for one when you can have two?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This excellent performance underscores what we have always said down here: right boat + right tackle + right Captain = Great results for our clients. Wonderful day by Travis Picariello and the unstoppable Captain Carlos.

On July 31 Matty joined Captain Carlos and Nosara Paradise Rentals GM Javier Hernandez for a short afternoon on the Adventurer and caught one of these used-to-be-rare-now-suddenly-common Wahoo.

Tasty eating all around and good fun on the 23-foot pocket knife. As the season winds down, the Adventurer is getting ready for an active off-season of maintenance and a little fishing between rainstorms.

After an incredibly successful first season we have nothing but the highest hopes for the Adventurer in the coming years.

Captain David and the Explorer are in peak form and the 2013 season has proven that the Super Panga's success is no fluke. This 26-foot barroom brawler beats up big fish like a boat twice her size and puts anglers right in the middle of the action.

People often ask us if they should go offshore or stay inshore, and we give them the answer that all anglers love: Both!

Peter Karpinski booked the legendary Explorer and got all he could handle both offshore in the blue water and inshore where the meat fish like to school up. He started the day with two excellent Sailfish releases with the first fish blasting through the spread around noon

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Excellent release by Mate Kevin to ensure the safety of both fish and angler. On the next fish Peter was feeling a little brave and decided to bill the fish himself...not quite as easy as Mate Kevin makes it look, huh?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

With the trophy fish released, Captain David pointed the Explorer inshore and Peter had a field day on nice-sized Yellowfin Tunas. Take a look at this trio of tasty treats:

Excellent work from the powerful Super Panga and by angler Peter Karpinski!

Nathaniel Krauthammer took to the Explorer with his lady on July 15 and within two hours they had released 'His and hers' Pacific Sailfish. This first beauty came calling at noon:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The second fish was nearly identical in size and was released just after 1pm. Great fish-handling by Mate Kevin and outstanding hunting by the crafty Captain David!

Rolando Rodriguez hails from the hard-fishing town of Tampa, FL and came to Nosara primarily to hunt the monster Snook that live in the Nosara River. However the siren's call of the nearby blue water could not be denied as Mr. Rodriguez booked the Explorer during his brief visit.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This Sailfish is a monster and Rolando was stoked to releases this exquisite pelagic.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Great work by Captain Carlos and Captain David...when this much experience is on the boat the fish better watch out!

Travis Picariello is a good old boy from New Jersey who we had the pleasure of meeting at a fishing show in Suffern, NY. After a lot of pleading and begging, his parents allowed him and his cousin to visit us in Nosara, and clearly these fellas had some aces up their sleeves!

Captain David took the Explorer to the blue water and they released a fantastic Marlin followed up by a big Sailfish.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Travis went ahead and picked up dinner in the form of this tasty 15lbs. Tuna. Great start to the week for the Picariello boys.

The Explorer is absolutely on fire this month! On July 25 she released a Marlin and a Sailfish, plus mopped up on Yellowfin Tuna and the suddenly-abundant Wahoo!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The billfish were released early in the trip, leaving the rest of the day open for fridge-filling.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

That's some incredibly well-rounded fishing from the most powerful panga in the bay. Great work by Captain David and Mate Kevin on this excellent day!

The hits keep coming for the Explorer. Check out these excellent Yella Fellas from July 26:

Then on July 28 the bill collectors swarmed the legendary Explorer with Captain David on the helm and Captain Carlos in the cockpit bringing their substantial experience to bear on these brutal billfish:

This mega-Marlin was a heck of a fighter and a girth girl. Look at those shoulders:

The Marlin release was followed up by some great Sailfish action, including this amazing sequence of above the water acrobatics.

Keen fish-handling by Carlos meant three more safe Sailfish releases for the Super panga.

On July 31 Charlie Phillips, Jason Kintner, and Joseph Timm had a huge day on the Explorer with lots of billfish action backed up with good eatin' fish.

Jason Kitner: "SIX Pacific Sail Fish on the Explorer with Capt David and First Mate Kevin in one day! OUTSTANDING!!!"

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

After releasing the trophy fish this posse set up shop over the reef about 2 miles out and piled the fishbox high with tasty Yellowfins and Ponpanos.

Here's a video shot from the Adventurer about 200 yards away; sorry for the quality, but this is a long way to zoom!

Hey look! There's the Adventurer with Matty and Javier in the background (left picture).

On August 5, Andy McGuire had a phenomenal trip on the legendary Explorer with Captain David on the helm and Captain Carlos in the mate position. The dynamic duo put out an irresistible spread and the Sailfish swarmed the Super panga with veracity.

Check out this high-flyin' billfish action:

The first pair of Sailfish put on a great show above the water, but the second pair put on a high-wire act the likes of Barnum and Bailey's:

Always the mindful skipper, Captain David set the Explorer up for Dorado later in the trip and scored this tasty morsel for his client.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Explorer's hot streak continued on August 6 as Captain David showed these Jacksonville clients an excellent adventure with FIVE Sailfish released on one trip.

Mate Kevin is already showing off his locally-polished fishing skills as all five billfish were returned to the water unharmed.

After the Sailfish bite shut down in the afternoon Captain David retooled the Explorer's spread to deliver dinner filets in the form of this wonderful 40+lbs. Dorado.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Looks like these clients have nothing to complain about this month...five trophy releases and a full fridge of fresh fish filets!

The mighty Wanderer is the FishingNosara flagship and has earned the title of the top boat in the bay.

The Master Captain William is the steady hand while the Super Mate Alex keeps everyone smiling.

Together they have built a spotless rep for quality, safety, and results that can not be topped by any boat in the area.

On July 24 Captain William acclimated these two young anglers to the local Sailfish scene, as each of them scored a Pacific Sailfish release.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

No matter your level of fishing expertise, the Wanderer and her crew have the tools, talent and teaching skill to get you on the fish of a lifetime.

Glenn Wootton and his family had a lights-out performance on the mighty Wanderer on July 26. These South Florida anglers started out with a fantastic Marlin release:

After a textbook safe release, Glenn got a Marlin of his own on the hook. Here are some pictures that Glenn sent along with the following message:

"The first picture is me after 10 minutes; the last one is a half hour later. He kicked my ass!"

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

That's right Glenn...this ain't no river trout but instead the very top of the fishing food chain!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Wanderer boated a trio of nice Sailfish to follow up on their earlier Marlin score.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

For their final trick, the girls nabbed some tasty Wahoo for the dinner table. Excellent work ladies!

Great work by the incomparable Captain William and First Mate Alex on a day with safe billfish releases and dinner in the fishbox.

Glenn Wootton's group returned to the flagship on July 28 and took a tour of Sailfish City. The action fired off early in the full day trip and didn't let up 'til late in the afternoon.

After three quick releases before noon, the action slowed down just long enough for lunch. In the afternoon the group picked up two more Sailfish releases plus a big Wahoo.

Tim Womack and his family lit it up on the Wanderer during their quick visit to Nosara near the end of July. The mayor of Sailfish City put this excellent family of anglers on five Pacific Sailfish...even the wife and kids got to reel in some monster billfish!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tim broke the ice with the first release of the day, but was soon challenged by a mighty pair of junior anglers.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Not to be outdone, mama got in on the action with a Sailfish of her own.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tim finished off the trip the same way he started with the fifth and final safe release.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Great hunting by Captain William and wonderful fish-handling by First Mate Alex to safely release all five fish.

Charlie Phillips, Joe Timm, and Jason Kintner blew the fish out of the water on August 1. How about two Marlin (300lbs. and 500lbs.) and a Sailfish for the trophy case and a nice 25lbs. Mahi for the dinner table?

Jason Kintner: "SIX Pacific Sail Fish on the Explorer with Capt David and First Mate Kevin in one day, followed by TWO Pacific Blue Marlin releases with Capt William and First Mate Alex the next day out!!! OUTSTANDING!!!"

"We WILL BE BACK!! Amazing fishery, amazing people!! William, Alex, David and Kevin were professional in every way. See y'all again soon!!!"

Laura McLean Phillips: "The crew of the Wanderer is AMAZING! These guys know how to make some memories."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Things I learned in Costa Rica
Catching Bonita on light tackle is FUN!!!!
Catching Mahi is A LOT of FUN!!
Catching Pacific Sailfish on Catfish gear is GREAT Fun!!!
Catching 400# Pacific Blue Marlin on 30# test is BRUTAL!! MUCHO respect for the Blue Marlin...Now where did I put that IcyHot.....

-Jason Kintner

Don't miss these guys' final day of fishing in the 'Catch of the Month' section above!

Linda and Mike Connelly brought the whole family down from Florida to experience all that Nosara has to offer. After a magical Horseback Safari Tour they chose the Wanderer on August 2 for a productive day of inshore fishing.

They hauled in a Dorado and a Ponpano, which should both go well with the Wahoo that Matty donated to them after they let him tag along on the horses.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This Dorado was scored by Michael who reps his Duval Jaguars hat wherever he goes, from Florida to his current home in Hawaii to Nosara.

Later Joe scored this excellent Pacific Ponpano which makes for some excellent ceviche.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

All told it was a great trip with lots of excitement for the whole group. We can't wait to welcome them back again soon!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Wanderer stayed near shore on August 5 with client David Abbott and took advantage of the swarm of Wahoo that have invaded the green water. They scored two nice silver bullets:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Clearly Wahoo is on the menu for these guys.. However they may need to trade some filets if they want any Mahi; I don't think this fella will even make two sandwiches:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Newland Crocker is a dyed-in-the-wool fisherman from the Tar Heel State and it was an honor to host his group on the mighty Wanderer for a landmark day of fishing on August 6. They got off to a fast start with a wonderful 250lbs. Striped Marlin release.

Not to rest on their laurels, these North Carolinians added three Sailfish release including a very challenging Double Sailfish release:

What better way to round out a day of trophy releases than to bloody the decks and fill the icebox with this very tasty 35lbs. Dorado?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Excellent fishing as always from the boat that is ruling Garza Bay, you will not find a better equipped fishing platform in all of Costa Rica.

Nosara River Fishing

The Snook action continues to heat up at the river mouth as the inshore rains are pushing fresh nutrient-rich water out to the sea. Check out some of this month's catches:

Recently the rains also brought a treat: this amazing triple rainbow! What a great blessing:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Also the Fuppernos (Friends of the River) are staying on task by keeping the river clean and free of garbage; the return of the seasonal rains means that lots of junk is flowing down the mountain and only through the vigilance of the Fuppernos can the river thrive.

Read more and get involved with the cause by visiting the Fuppernos Facebook page and do your part...if you are in town visiting for a few days why not give back to the Nosara community by pitching in on a river clean-up?

FishingNosara Futbol!

One of the best parts about the green season is that our staff gets a little time off to pursue all Costa Rican's great passion: Futbol!

The guys are participating in a friendly league for the next two months and anyone who is visitng is welcome to play. The games are on Tuesday nights and the cost is $2 (just to cover field maintenance and lights).

Oh, and fair warning: Captain William is the best soccer play you have ever seen. Seriously.

FishingNosara is now the exclusive source for authentic Costa Del Mar sunglasses for the entire Guanacaste province!

We took our initial delivery of all the newest styles and people can't get enough of these shades:

There were several people literally hounding Javier and the boys to get the display built and stocked so they could be the first in the area to take home these hard-to-find styles.

First Mate Alex was one of them, opting for the new Realtree Camo frames:

Betsy knocked everyone out with the new Teal frames that have all the ladies in town jealous:

Of course Craig can't help himself so he got the loudest electric blue you've ever seen:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We are selling these things fast and resupply is a slow process, so if you see a pair you like in the Guiones Beach office I recommend snatching them up quick before their gone!

July 26, 2013 - Day 471

It's hard to believe that three weeks have passed since the last post, but know that we have been neck-deep in The Discoverer Project for every second of it and we have some excellent results to report.

In the last post we completed our epoxy sleeves for any bolts through the decks.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We turned our attention to final details and we doggedly approach painting time; first up was filling small fiberglass pit-pockets with a muddy mix of polyester resin and phenolic microballoons:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This stuff finished off so smooth after sanding that we decided to coat the entire deck and floor with the same process:

It's always the out-of-the-way spots on boats that are the tricky ones, and Craig set about chasing down potential water intrusion spots in every conceivable place.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

During this work it was discovered that the sides of the boat in the rear had too much flex in them for our liking, so we added a horizontal fiberglass stabilizer from the lip of the fuel deck to the outer hull.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We patched in a small overlap section in the back so that this repair would be continuous down the whole side of the boat.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We then backfilled the newly airtight cavity with Great Stuff Pond and Stone which is much more water-resilient than open-cell Great Stuff.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Matt enclosed some raw wood under the console which was so out-of-the-way that an access panel needed to be cut in the bathroom floor:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Craig continued to chase last minute items:

The nose:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The mid-ship access covers (freshly cut and wrapped in fiberglass):

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The feet around the fighting chair mount:

Fuel tank rear supports:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Final clean-up and wipedown:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Lastly, we are lifting the level of the footpads about 1/8 of an inch where they bolt to the deck.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Plus it adds that much more strength and resistances to water intrusion in this critical area.

So where was Matt during all this?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Let's get painting!

July 27, 2013 - Day 472

It took a whirlwind day of painting, but we sprayed every drop of gelcoat we had and have a pretty good jump on the paint work for The Discoverer Project.

Our pal Ginno was the trigger-man with Matt backing him up on the mixing station.

We're pretty pumped that our gelcoat spraying technique worked out and we got two coats on before running out of materials. We are certainly excited for the next 15 gallons to arrive on Thursday so we can finish this thing off!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

August 3, 2013 - Day 480

Ah the misery of logistics! Just when we were getting a head of steam built painting the white part of the boat, The Discoverer Project hit a snag when we ran out of gelcoat, hardener, and paint strainers.

We waited 6 days for our Thursday delivery from FGCI and there is only so much piddling around one can do on a boat that is all ready for paint.

Then on the fateful day to spray, Ginno the painter called off because he had some other projects to do. We decided to proceed with the final paint work ourselves rather than putting the project off any further.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We started by hand brushing gelcoat over any spots in the hull that needed extra material, and as it set-up we sprayed more material over the top.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Also, Matt came back around and filled in the couple of square feet where the lack of white gelcoat had hampered our first spray. Check out the rear transom deck, finally completed:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

All told we are pumped to have reached this point, but the next challenge is equally murky and daunting: how to best prepare this gelcoat-only paint job to make it look shiny and new.

We are planning on wetsanding the whole thing with P400, P600, P800, and P1000 over the next few weeks. Until then we are proud of this result:

August 8, 2013 - Day 485

Still rocking and rolling on the paint work for The Discoverer Project. First up we slid the tripod boat stands a few feet so that we could spray in those areas:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Also we discovered that one of the tripods was hiding a dirty little secret: two cavities in the hull that went all the way to the original fiberglass. Here is the repair process:
