Greetings!
This is Craig Sutton with the June 2013 Fishing Report and all I can say is "Holy cow!"Who would of thought the fishing could get any better? Well it did and it just keeps going. The team had tons of trip this month with great anglers and returning Hall of Famers. The results show the world who is the number one fishing group in Costa Rica. The 23-foot Adventurer leads off the report this month with several Sailfish releases by the fearless Captain Carlos. This pocket knife of a fishing platform has been knocking them out near-shore, but we would have never guessed that the Adventurer would be a billfish hunter! Not to be outdone, the pound-for-pound champion Explorer has been on a run of multi-species trips that prove Captain David's angling moxy. Clients on the Explorer were treated to all-you-can eat fishing as the reef-dwelling morsels were chewing the bottom out of the super panga all month long. Yellowfin tuna, Dorados, and Snappers of all shapes and colors met their match this month on the Explorer. The flagship Wanderer with the living legend Captain William and the super mate Alex had multiple Marlin releases this month backed up with countless Sailfish releases, including a few deft-defying Double Sailfish releases. This catch-all fishing vessel also bested Roosterfish, Broomtail Grouper and Yellowfin Tuna. Don't miss this month's Safari Tour photos, the excellent catches from the Nosara River and this month's update of The Discoverer Project below the reports. Coming up this month we have some more Hall of Fame anglers fishing and we can't wait to see what they catch. These guys are good and they will make it happen. If you just can't wait until then you can always keep an eye on the FishingNosara Blog for the world class results as they happen. We only have a few months left till the end of our year and I think the best is yet to come. If you want to fish this season you need to book now.
Tight Lines y Pura Vida!

Catch of the Month - May 25, 2013
Wanna hear about the best boat in Garza? How about two Marlin releases on the Wanderer for two different charters on the same day?
May 25 will now be remembered as the day of the ultimate Marlin Doubler Header with client Janet Storey releasing a 300lbs. Blue Marlin at 10:11am and then client John Baumgart releasing a 400lbs. Blue Marlin at 5:29pm!

Janet's Marlin was a real thing of beauty; big, strong, and tough as a bear. But even this monster wasn't prepared to do battle with an angler from the hard-fishin' Glades region of Florida surrounding Lake Okeechobee!
Janet set everyone straight later on Facebook: "I caught the 300# Blue Marlin. William and Alex are a great on the Wanderer. Can't say enough good things about Craig and his staff. We enjoyed it all."

After a safe release by First Mate Alex, Captain William brought the Wanderer home to Garza to let off the Storey group and pick-up FishingNosara Hall of Famer John Baumgart for his afternoon half-day charter.
The headed out to troll the same lane of water and put in a full 4 hours of hunting until the reel sang out the song of a Marlin strike! Remember that this is a game of time investment and a slow start makes a nice prologue to a great fishing story.

Amazing fish by John Baumgart and great fishing handling as always by the incomparable First Mate Alex.

Days like this one are rare for sure, but when you have the right boat, tackle, and crew for the job there is always a chance for great action like this on the mighty Wanderer!

This month the 23 foot pocket knife panga launched a surprise attack against the Pacific Sailfish population...The Adventurer is a small boat that ain't scared of a big fish!

Our good friend TJ Conrads is back in Nosara and he couldn't help but get back out on the blue water for some billfish hunting.
Remember that TJ joined us in November 2012 and had a double sailfish release on the flagship Wanderer...this time TJ was flying solo and opted for Captain Carlos on the 23-foot Adventurer.
Even on a smaller boat, TJ Conrads wouldn't be denied as the master hunter released another Pacific Sail!

"What a fight!" TJ commented later. We look forward to seeing Mr. Conrads in the future...the Sailfish community may be less excited.
The Adventurer has been pushed harder and performed better than we ever expected and the credit is 100% due to the fearless Captain Carlos. On May 25 client Andrew and the pocket knife challenged a big-ass Marlin to a fight and gave her everything she could handle.

Though the fish broke off after about 30 minutes, we are convinced that it won't be long till the powerful 23-footer conquers a big Marlin. As a consolation prize, they did manage to catch and release this beautiful Pacific Sailfish later in the day around 3:30pm

Most recently, Nathan Treueskis joined Captain Carlos on the Adventurer and this Hawaii-based angler brought along a little lady with some big fish-fightin' skills! Check out this beautiful Pacific Sailfish release:

Captain Carlos continues to build a reputation as one of the baddest dudes on the ocean. Look out for more great action from the secret weapon this summer!

Captain David and the Explorer are in peak form and the 2013 season has proven that the Super Panga's success is no fluke. This 26-foot barroom brawler beats up big fish like a boat twice her size and puts anglers right in the middle of the action.
On May 30 Dave Buckner and his boys had a landmark day on the bar-room brawlin' Explorer with a 12lbs. White tuna, 30lbs. Yellowfin Tuna, and 20lbs. Dorado in the fishbox.

Such variety is not uncommon in these waters...having the tools and talent to bring them all in on the same trip is what makes the Explorer the best mid-size boat in Garza Bay!
After the fruitful morning with Dave Buckner, the Explorer and Captain David were pleased to welcome back three-time FishingNosara Hall of Famer Dennis Paul for his customary warm-up trip on the 28-footer. Dennis had plans to tackle the offshore monsters later in his trip, but first-things-first...get some good edible fish to fill the fridge for the week.

This 30lbs. Cubera Snapper was a great start to the trip. Later they pulled this big Needlefish off the reef...it may look ugly but tastes delicious.

Dennis' lady Barbara Dayhoff added this feisty White Tuna to the menu which includes three very different types of meat. Great array of catches by Captain David and Mate Kevin on this trip

To recap: after a three-species morning Captain David added three more species in the afternoon...that is some amazing inshore fishing by the legendary Explorer!
On May 31 Erin Byker booked the Super Panga for a 3/4 day on the inshore reefs and they harvested an excellent array of table fare.

These Michigan-based anglers caught a bunch of Bonitas early on then hit the jackpot with two nice 12lbs. White Tunas and a tasty Yellowfin Tuna.
June 1 was staff fishing day for the crew of Nosara Paradise Rentals as General Manager Javier Hernandez was joined by Marino and Grevan from the property staff for an inshore harvest on board the Explorer.

El Jefe helped break in our new set of Penn Spinfishers as the boys brought home a nice Cuberra Snapper, 8 Yellowfin Tuna (20lb.), 3 White Tuna (15lbs.) plus a small Dorado. This is the second time in a week that Captain David has captured the four major meat species on a single day and by the looks of these reports the Explorer may put the fish market out of business.
Great catches for some great guys; even Marcos is getting in on the fun!
On June 3 Hall of Famer Dennis Paul and Barbara Dayhoff returned to the Explorer for more action, only this time they headed offshore about 10 miles to check out the blue water.
Early on in the trip they found a small school of Yellowfin Tuna and Dennis Paul added sushi to his menu in the form of two excellent 25lbs. Yellas.

Look at the girth on this fella:

The billfish weren't biting as aggressively as usual in the afternoon, and I think Dennis managed to bury a hook in the reason why:

This 5 foot long Shark was skulking the area which most likely pushed the billfish a little more offshore. It's neat to see a shark so close, but as we have no interest in eating it so this fish was released unharmed.

The mighty Wanderer is the FishingNosara flagship and has earned the title of the best boat in the bay.
The Master Captain William is the steady hand while the fun-loving First Mate Alex keeps everyone smiling on the water.
Together they have built a spotless rep for quality, safety, and results that can not be topped by any boat in the area.
Craig Sutton was joined by Paula, Matty, and Alejandro for an afternoon of fishing on the Wanderer on May 15. Captain William gathered the intelligence from Captain David on the Explorer that a large school of spinning dolphin were in the area feasting on Yellowfin Tuna.

The team worked this school together as First Mate Alex and Craig tossed poppers from the foredeck while Paula and Alejandro went to work in the cockpit.

Captain William and Captain David worked together to keep the fish corralled so that both boats would have maximum chances at success.

Once the bite shut down around 3pm it was once again time for an honored FishingNosara tradition: Fresh Sushi!

Craig Sutton and Matty came back on May 16 for one of the rare occasion of the US Office fishing without any other guests.
First Mate Alex and Captain William were joined by Junior Mate Hernan for a trip to the blue water that yield a trio of nice Sailfish releases, plus a bit of dinner for the fishbox.

First Mate Alex stayed busy with all these Sailfish releases, plus it was a great learning opportunity for Junior Mate Hernan to see how the pros do it.
After the Sailfish bite cooled off the Wanderer hooked-up a pair of Dorados; Craig boated the smaller one (25lbs.) quickly and easily:
With the cow in the box, Matty fought the bull Dorado for about 10 more minutes until the fish reared it's head just enough for Alex to get a gaff shot:

Three great Sailfish releases and filets on ice...just another day on the flagship Wanderer!
The next day the Wanderer hosted the A-Team to with Craig and Matty being joined by Nosara Paradise Rentals GM Javier Hernandez and security chief Eduardo Hernandez. The action got off to a quick start with this beefy Sailfish release.

Shortly after the release Eduardo got a big Dorado on the line and brought him all the way into the cooler. Estimated at 35lbs., this Mahi will definitely keep the farm fed for a while.

Eduardo has been part of our family since the beginning, yet we were shocked to learn that El Gato has only fished inshore prior to this trip. Great results from what we hope is the first of many trips offshore to the blue water.

Kevin Golden booked four trips on the mighty Wanderer the week of May 19 and we are pleased to report some great performances. His first day certainly didn't disappoint with four Sailfish releases.

Great work by First Mate Alex to safely release these fish, all while coordinating a photo shoot!

They backed up the trophy fish with a big Bull Dorado; the meanie greenies have been thick the last two weeks so look out for some big Mahi filets coming your way.

After waylaying four Sailfish and a big Bull Dorado, Kevin Golden and his fellow Tampa anglers stayed inshore to try their hand at the strongest fish in the shallows: the Cubera Snapper!

This red monster engulfed a rigged live bait and the fight was on for Kevin...they grow 'em big in Tampa Bay but not this big! Even though this is a 'small' Snapper at 35lbs. it fought just as hard as its 80+lbs. brothers.

Nice smiles boys!
John Baumgart is a returning Hall of Famer who last year boated multiple Sailfish and one of the biggest Snappers ever caught here. This week he has three trips planned and got things started with an excellent Sailfish release on the Wanderer.

Check out that old-school shirt. That is the first style we ever had (2008 I think) and it looks like it's held up through a few fishing trips.

Of course this Sailfish release was just a prologue to John's next fish (see Catch of the Month).
On the week of May 24 Dave Crisp brought the whole family down for a Costa Rica fishing vacation and on his first day of fishing his son went toe-to-toe with a mean Pacific Sailfish.

She put on a heck of a show on the way to the boat, but the crafty Captain William kept the fight short and First Mate Alex executed a clean safe release.

We recently took delivery of a new set of Penn Spinfisher 7500 mounted on Penn Bluewater Carnage jigging rods and took them for a test drive on the mighty Wanderer on May 26.
The Storey family from Moorehaven, FL was back on board after their legendary Blue Marlin release (see Catch of the Month) and decided to stay inshore. The highlight of their trip was this wonderful Rooster fish release.

After a quick photo this beast was set free. We look forward to seeing him on the hook again really soon!

Here's Janet's email from later in the week: "We had a great time fishing. William and Alex were so good at their jobs. They keep the boat and their equipment tip top." "The staff was so helpful and willing to answer all our questions. We really enjoyed Freddie who drove us to the airport and to the boat." "Tell Craig when he gets the new boat finished, William should get it. He is an outstanding Captain. Thanks for the great trip."
She had a week of eye-popping catches offshore, but for Janet's final trip they stayed inshore to to find some tasty bottom fish. The action was heavy early as a school of Jack Crevelles couldn't resist our deep jigs

Notice the right side of the picture the double hookup...when these fish get hungry they FEED!

They had a ton of rod-bending fun and the highlight for the fishbox was this perfectly-sized Rock Snapper. This tasty beast put our new reels to the test and should surely serve as a perfect end-of-vacation dinner for these Florida anglers.

That afternoon we welcomed back Dave Crisp and his family. Mr. Crisp is a fine angler from Northeast Florida and came to Nosara on the recommendation of our great friend Captain Rick Ryals of Florida Sportsman Radio fame.

Clearly we get a little nervous when such heavyweights endorse our place, plus the weather onshore was less-than-favorable for Mr. Crisp's trip on the Wanderer.
Fortunately the dynamic duo of Captain William and First Mate Alex would not be denied as they deftly dodged thunderheads and still managed to keep the blue beauty on the fish.
Earlier in the morning they released a Rooster fish with Janet Storey's group, and wouldn't you know it that another pez gallo was out there waiting for Dave Crisp.

This Rooster fish release was a real highlight for Dave, plus he went inshore and caught this little guy later in the trip.

To the left is a nice Pompano, but the other fish we still don't know exactly what species. Dave said it tasted excellent!
The Wanderer continued her reign of supremacy on the inshore reef on May 28 and reports a wide variety of tasty fare in the fish box for client Ivan and his group. The Penn Spinfisher 7500 was the weapon of choice this trip and First Mate Alex deployed a cloud of fresh Bonita chunks that the bottom fish could not resist.

A small Snapper and an Amberjack were the first casualties; unlike it's Atlantic brethren these AJs are very good to eat. Not to be out done the ladies got into the fight and conquered an even bigger Snapper. Way to go!

The big score of the trip as far as weight goes is this lovely Broomtail Grouper estimated at 20lbs. This is some of the best-tasting fish in the world and is certainly a treat for these anglers.

Lastly this Rock Snapper is one of the best examples we have seen of such a specimen and believe me it tastes just as good as it looks.

Amazing achievement on May 29 by client David Albert and his family... how about two Double Sailfish Releases on one trip. After a great week of inshore action the flagship is stoked to be back on her usual beat: patrolling the streets of Sailfish City!

The first double release came at 11:50am as First Mate Alex performed this daring stunt without injury to either the fish or the anglers. While this would be enough for most charter boats, Captain William is not your average charter captain.
He swung the Wanderer right back to where the first pair was discovered and sure enough found another pair of Sailfish just over one hour later.

This second release was performed at 1:20pm after a 15 minute fight. Four fish in a hour is not the norm, but when an abnormally good bite is happening the Wanderer won't be far away.

Client David Stone and his family booked the Wanderer and they kept the pressure on the Sailfish swarm with multiple nice releases on May 30.

This mean Sailfish came calling early in the trip and put on a heck of a show on the way to a clean release. Estimated at 115lbs. this is a common-sized Sailfish for our area, however the second Sail of the day is a real monster.

This beast put the crew, boat, and angler to the test but David Stone lived up to his rock-solid entomology in this battle.

Safe released as always as we marvel at another month of great performances by the best boat in Garza:

Alejandro Garcia is the newest member of our team at Nosara Paradise Rentals and FishingNosara and has already established himself as a super ambassador of the pura vida spirit. Turns out Alejandro is a bad-to-the-bone river fisherman as well.
It's fair to say he had a great weekend of fishing in early June. On Saturday the 8th he hooked up this nice Snapper:

Then on Sunday he brought in this monster Snook:

Whoa! This monster tips the scale at just over 30lbs.

That's what I call bringing home the bacon!

Javier has continued his onslaught on the fish in the Nosara river mouth. Check out some of his highlights from this month:
Nice Pargo Snapper
Snook (12 lbs. and 3 lbs.) and a 6lbs. Jurel with angler Joseson Nice Snook for our buddy Cumi. Also the Fuppernos (Friend of the River) are staying on task by keeping the river clean and free of garbage; the return of the seasonal rains means that lots of junk is flowing down the mountain and only through the vigilance of the Fuppernos can this lovely resource thrive. Thanks to Pipin, Marina, Manuel, Rosi, Joaquin and Juan Luis for their help this month. Read more and get involved with the cause by visiting the Fuppernos Facebook page and do your part...if you are in town visiting for a few days why not give back to the Nosara community by pitching in on a river clean-up?

Horseback Safari Tour
George Shipley and the family spent the morning snorkeling in San Juanillo bay and they observed lots of great underwater features. Check out their journey under the sea:
|
FishingNosara is now the exclusive source for authentic Costa Del Mar sunglasses for the entire Guanacaste province! We took our initial delivery of all the newest styles and people can't get enough of these shades:
There were several people literally hounding Javier and the boys to get the display built and stocked so they could be the first in the area to take home these hard-to-find styles.
First Mate Alex was one of them, opting for the new Realtree Camo frames:
Betsy knocked everyone out with the new Teal frames that have all the ladies in town jealous:
Of course Craig can't help himself so he got the loudest electric blue you've ever seen:
We are selling these things fast and resupply is a slow process, so if you see a pair you like in the Guiones Beach office I recommend snatching them up quick before their gone!

April 29, 2013 - Day 383 Over the weekend we finished installing the four stringers that will support the forthcoming wood for the rear transom deck. It started simply enough by gluing together two 1/4 inch pieces of marine plywood together to form a 1/2 inch piece. Then we cut out four pieces about 30 inches in length; the hole itself varies from 23 inches to 24 inches so at this point you want a little extra wood.

Then we test fit each piece and label them according to their slot...certainly would be a fail to let these things get mismatched.

We used a plumb-line and some simple trigonometry to make sure that each stringer fits the slanted back wall of the transom. Here is an example of the fit we are going for:
Once we have a rough fit we encapsulate each stringer in fiberglass matting; an addition to strengthening the wood and making in watertight, this also add thickness that we can grind away until we have the perfect fit.

Here are two of the finished pieces:
Here are all the pieces in place, supported by temporary screws:

The final step is to lay down some fiberglass to lock these stringers into place. There are some tight corners here, and one small mistake can prevent a stringer from locking in properly.

After an overnight cure, we were not pleased to find that two of the four stringers failed to adhere:

Fortunately with fiberglass, you can always grind it off and try again. Here is the fixed result:

This week we will be shaping and installing the top piece, then we will run our top layers of woven roven and fiberglass matting. Ideally this repair will seamlessly match the prior repairs to the side gunwales. Stay tuned!
May 9, 2013 - Day 393 Hey everybody! Craig and Matt are in Nosara this week trying to catch fish, so here are the pics from last week. To finish the major reconstruction of the rear transom deck, Craig ran fiberglass tape around all the corners underneath the deck. The idea here is to create a seal to catch the forthcoming epoxy mixture.

These are very tight corners and it is virtually impossible to create a perfect seal with no air bubbles with a single piece. That's why Craig laid all of these corners with two layers of tape; it's twice the work but is the only way to be sure it will work properly.
With the new plywood secured to the stringers and all the seams covered, Craig proceeds to pour epoxy mixed with phenolic microballoons into the void. This mix should penetrate all the gaps and created a bullet-proof level of strength for this whole section.

You can see in these shots that the back-fill worked to perfection with nary a drop of the red stuff falling through.

All that's left now is to wait 24-36 hours for this epoxy to fully cure and harden, then it is on to finish fiber-glassing.

Meanwhile we are continuing to search for little spots that have evaded our repairs so far with Craig tending to the anchor box and Matty continuing to shape the rear deck, gunwales, and foredeck.

May 30, 2013 - Day 414 We are back from Costa and fired up to keep jamming on the Discoverer so we can take it on down south for a good old time. In the last post you can see that the new piece of marine plywood has been laid on the new stringers. After the initial epoxy set up, Craig backfilled around the entire piece with an epoxy/microballoon mixture. The week before we left for Nosara it rained everyday and we couldn't pour any fiberglass to encase the top of the marine plywood, which was still raw and exposed to the elements. The last day before leaving we got a break in the humidity and poured a hasty piece of woven roven over the wood.

You can see that there were air bubbles along the edges and that everything is far from level, but at least it is encased and can withstand the rain while we go do this:

So once we returned the next step was to level out the hasty pour from before and get a fresh start at making this thing look right. We used the 90 degree biaxial weave because the ribbing helps it hold tight to corners.

The pour came out much cleaner than the first attempt, and you can see in these shots how well the corners set up. While there are some air pockets and other imperfections that will be ground out and replaced, most of the corners achieved adhesion with no air bubbles at all.

This also allows our first unobstructed view of our marine plywood and we were happy to see no cracks, fissures, or other signs of stress in either the wood or the fiberglass. After another round of block sanding Matt applies a hot coat of resin and wraps it in wax paper; using a spatula we can work out the air pockets and create a nearly common level in preparation for the final run with the sander.

One trick is to remove the paper as soon as the resin begins to set because if you leave it too long the paper with shred and get encased in resin, which is a pain to correct and costs time.

Next up we will apply the same technique to these fuel covering boards and the central deck cover, as well as a final pour on the nose and foredeck to bring everything to a factory-perfect level. We'll see...

'til next time!
