DUF 2013 Workshop Offerings

DUF 2013 will offer movement sessions in the following regions. Classes will be divided by age and grade school levels.

children in workshop

Folklórico Fun Parent & Me (Pre-K): This course is an introduction to Mexican folk dance -- movement and music. Coupled with hands-on arts activities, this class will take children (and their parent) on a musical dance journey. Along the way, they will be exposed to different musical rhythms, be introduced to imitative dance movement, and practice their school-readiness skills. The class will culminate with a presentation to open the DUF Class Recital on Sunday.

Latin Rhythms (Teens & Adults): This high-energy class will introduce Latin dances including salsa, bachata and merengue. Students will learn the basics of these dances including timing, partnering, footwork, and styling. This class will also incorporate dance techniques that students can apply to their ballet folklórico training and performance as well as social dancing.

Folklórico 101 (Children,Teens & Adults): This class is for Beginning level dancers, adults and young adults, and will feature standards from throughout Mexico. This is a new class that is being offered to potentially help students to break down steps that they might be struggling with in their personal performing groups or high school groups. Educators and young directors of beginning level adults may find this class helpful in their quest to teach and reach as many potential students for their groups as they can.

Bolivia (Older Teens & Adults): This class is for ALL level dancers ages 17+ and will include repertoire from Bolivia: Caporales. It is a typical dance from La Paz, Bolivia that centers on a colonial-time character named "Caporal". It contains a mix of African and Andean elements, and it has been derived from an older dance known as Tundique which represented the hardships that African slaves endured when brought to the highlands of the Andean territories since the 16th century. The costumes are inspired on an existent syncretism of the millenary Aymara people (the Andean inhabitants of the Kollao who live near Lake Titicaca). It is performed every year during the main festivities of Bolivia but its popularity has extended beyond its frontiers throughout South America. The beauty of the Caporales music was put in evidence when one Caporal melody was used for the original "Lambada" of Brazil.

Maestros will be assigned to classes as they are requested. If you have a particular maestro (from last year's roster) that you would like to request, regardless of the region, please email a copy of your registration receipt with a request to danzantes@aol.com to be accommodated.

More classes may be added to accommodate overflow. Please ensure that you are on the mailing list to receive notification by clicking here.

Fresno Welcomes Back Danzantes Unidos Festival!

A message from DUF 2013 Festival Director Julio C. Bustos-Peńaloza

ˇNo se acabó el mundo! But you knew that didn't you? But 2013 does seem to bring with it a new dawn: Latinos seem to be thriving in every arena of this great nation of ours, and the folklórico movement has played a very important role in that success. On behalf of Teocalli and the DUF 2013 Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Danzantes Unidos Festival 2013 "Nuestro Nuevo Amanecer"!

Festival Workshops will once again be hosted at Clovis West High School and the Showcase Concerts at the historic Warnor's Center for the Performing Arts. We are particularly excited about the showcases returning to the Warnor's CPA. In addition to the historic value, the Warnor is one of the most beautiful venues in all of California.

This will be the eighth festival in which Teocalli collaborates with Danzantes Unidos to keep this dancers' tradition going. For the 2013 edition, our local committee is seeking to expand and include more volunteers from other Valley groups who are equally enthusiastic about the goals and vision of the Danzantes Unidos Festival. The goal is to maintain the format and traditions that have made the festival the biggest folklórico gathering in the United States and Mexico, while introducing new activities that will enhance and energize the dancers experience during DUF 2013.

Dancers and dance enthusiasts, if you missed last year's festival, please make sure that you come to be celebrated by other dancers. We promise that your experience will be out of this world!

Julio C. Bustos-Peńaloza

University Folklórico Summit
Sembrando Las Semillas de Consciencia: Educating the Next Generation
January 18, 19 & 20, 2013

Hosted by the Ballet Folklórico de UC Riverside & the UFS Committee

Mission Statement
It is the goal of this summit to provide the opportunity for our youth to come together and collectively share the best practices among us as grupos folklóricos universitarios. Using the diversity of our voices and experiences, we will be able to begin a dialogue for the reason of defining our purposes and being proactive to our needs as collegiate folklórico groups, rather than being reactive to our immediate environments.

The Summit strives to educate the next generation of folklórico student leaders of the multiple facets and characteristics that make up an efficient and sustainable university folklórico group. By the end of this summit, it is the hope that we all carry the semillas de consciencia back to our respective groups and nurture our folklórico groups to continue developing as strong representatives of our shared history, cultura, and experience. An equal and representative number of student leaders will be invited to participate and contribute to the summit.

Presentations:
