A Wellness Program that Works:
Controlling Gum Disease and Diabetes

A healthy mouth could mean thousands in medical savings and better health for those with chronic conditions such as diabetes. Chronic conditions affect millions of Americans. For example, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 25.8 million American have type 2 diabetes. Nearly half of all Americans will have periodontal disease sometime in their life. United Concordia Dental sponsored a study to measure the effect that periodontal care can have on those who are pregnant or have chronic conditions.

In this landmark study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania by Dr. Marjorie Jeffcoat, three years of medical and dental claims for 1.7 million United Concordia members were studied. A total of 178,617 individuals with chronic health conditions (or were pregnant) and gum disease were isolated. In 2007, periodontal treatment was offered to these patients. Of these patients, 90,000 with diabetes chose to receive periodontal treatment or declined it.

We're asking you to become a supporter of our 2014 "Keeping Kids Safe" Festival.  The  previous children's festival, hosted by the Beam "Easy Living" Center in April, 2013 was huge success, and continues to grow.  More than one thousand kids participated and were able to interact with law

We are excited to announce that this year the Gold Country Kiwanis Club will be the primary organizer of the event.  Our new venue, the Safety Training Center near the Sierra College campus, will allow expanded programs, participation and live demonstrations.

The 11th Annual Keeping Kids Safe Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2014.  Marc Klaas and the KlaasKids Foundation will again be providing families with digital fingerprints and photographs of their children.  KNCO/Star 94 will also be offering great prizes for their "Passport to Safety".  Fun activities and important safety information for the whole family, plus exhibits and demonstrations by our local agencies and non-profits dedicated to keeping our kids safe will be presented.  In addition to activities and demonstrations, we'll provide free hot dogs, chips, popcorn, soft drinks, and sno-cones.

New York Times Best Selling Author Kelly Corrigan comes to The Center for the Arts for a special Mother's Day show, May 11th at 2pm!
SPECIAL OFFER!
Bring your lunch receipt to the show and receive member pricing--a $5 savings!

"Kelly Corrigan's heartfelt homage to motherhood is every bit as tough and funny as it is nostalgic and searching. It's a tale about growing up, gaining wisdom, and reconciling with Mom (something we all must do eventually) but it's also an honest meditation on our deepest fears of death and abandonment. I loved this book, I was moved by this book, and now I will share this book with my own mother- along with my renewed appreciation for certain debts of love that can never be repaid." - Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love

Kelly Corrigan is the author of The Middle Place and Lift, both New York Times bestsellers. She is also a contributor to O: The Oprah Magazine, Good Housekeeping, and Medium. Kelly co-founded Notes & Words, an annual benefit concert for Children's Hospital Oakland featuring writers and musicians onstage together. Her YouTube channel, which includes video essays like "Transcending" and interviews with writers like Michael Lewis and Anna Quindlen, has been viewed by millions.

When Kelly was in high school, her mother neatly summarized the family dynamic as "Your father's the glitter but I'm the glue." This is a book about the difference between travel and life experience, stepping out and stepping up, fathers and mothers. But mostly it's about who you admire and why, and how that changes over time.

INFORMATION: 530-265-9463 www.ncwinery.com

Nevada City Winery is celebrating 34 years of award-winning winemaking in Nevada County with their annual Open House Party taking place on May 17 and 18. The featured event over the weekend is the "Bottle Your Own Bottle" Party that takes place in the Winery's cellar and barrel room located directly beneath the tasting room, on Spring Street in Nevada City.

Each year winemaker Mark Foster creates two barrels of two different wines just for this event. This year's "Bottle Your Own Bottle" event features a deliciously fruity 2012 Zinfandel as well as a 2012 Bordeaux Blend featuring Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.

"Cabernet Franc" Foster explained, "is a grape that does really well in our region. It generates great fruit along with floral and berry aromas and packs a mouthful of flavor. I think people are going to really like this wine."

At the Open House, become the winemaker for the day. Start by barrel tasting each wine. Then bottle the wine, cork it, foil the bottle top, and label each bottle with your own hand-signed, personalized wine label.

Meanwhile upstairs in the Tasting Room, the Winery will host a Gold Medal wine tasting featuring the 2012 Dolcetto that was a Double Gold Winner at the recent New World International Wine Competition as well as the Platinum Award Winner at the Consumer Wine Awards event.

Other Gold Medal wines include Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel and Gewurztraminer.

Open House activities include live music featuring folk duo Two Hands Bridge, and then the Brian Dougherty Trio on Saturday and Bob Mora and the Third Degree Blues Band on Sunday afternoon. The event also features a cheese tasting featuring Shaft's Cheese Company, a Sciabica Olive Oil tasting and Kelli's Cookies as well as a BBQ-grilled lunch.

There is a $10 entry fee ($5 for Wine Club Members) that includes all wine tasting, lunch, and entry to the "Bottle Your Own" party in the barrel room. The event goes from noon until 5:00 pm both days.

Help us Continue the Traditional 4th of July Celebration

By - Keith Davies & Robin Galvan-Davies - Cathy Whittlesey - Julia Jordan

In Nevada County, we are proud to host one of Northern California's finest Fourth of July celebrations. Our parades are second to none, our fairgrounds event provides great family fun and our aerial fireworks are the best in the Sierra foothills.

The Greater Grass Valley and Nevada City Chambers of Commerce along with the Grass Valley Downtown Association sponsor this community tradition. We spend many months each year planning the event.

Our combined annual budget for the Fourth of July increases every year and this year is no exception. Most of the obligated costs and charges we are looking at are associated with the daylong Fourth of July celebration at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Cost for the July 4th fairgrounds celebration include fairgrounds rental that is $6,500 and an additional $9,300 for fireworks. We also face higher costs for police and security patrols, entertainment, insurance, trash removal, janitorial services and other necessities. This year the budget adds up to approximately $45,000.

Admission prices barely cover our costs for the celebration and we cannot take on a deficit for the event. This year we are forced to increase ticket prices. Admission will be at $10 in advance for adults and $15 if you wait to purchase your ticket at the gate. It is FREE for children 12 and under. (The fairgrounds charges $5 per car for Parking.)

As has been the case through the years, many of the costs of the Fourth of July celebration are underwritten through the generous donations of local businesses and individual contributors. We are asking that you consider becoming a sponsor and sending a contribution for the 4th of July. You can send it to Nevada City Chamber of Commerce - 132 Main Street - Nevada City, CA 95959. We need your financial contribution to allow us to continue this traditional community celebration.

There are no changes planned for the Fourth of July parades, which rotate annually between Grass Valley and Nevada City and have done so for more than 100 years. This year's parade will be held at 11 a.m. on July 4th in historic downtown Nevada City.

We invite the entire community to come out on the Fourth of July, take in the parade, fairgrounds festivities and fireworks and enjoy a good, old-fashioned, patriotic celebration here in our hometowns of Grass Valley and Nevada City.

Keith Davies & Robin Galvan-Davies are CO-CEO's of the

Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce,
Cathy Whittlesey is Executive Director of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and
Julia Jordon is Executive Director of the Grass Valley Downtown Association.
