Greetings!

Jill Hockaday gives to United Way and uses services.

As we reflect on 2012, we know more than ever that we couldn't help the community without all of our 22,000 donors.

As you know we are trying to raise more than $10 million this year - an amount that again will help tens of thousands of our neighbors.

There are many stories out there that remind us how we can work together. Take Jill Hockaday (pictured above), who has given to United Way for years.

"Not in a million years did I think I would be benefiting from an agency that is supported by United Way," she said. You can hear and read her story here.

Thank you if you've already given this year. If you haven't, yet, please consider making your pledge during your workplace campaign. You can also donate online by clicking here. (Remember, donations received by Dec. 31, 2012, are tax deductible for 2012 taxes.)

Finally, we would appreciate if you consider reaching out to friends, acquaintances, relatives - anyone who might be interested in investing in our community through United Way.

We have included a sample letter below that you might choose to send. You may also share your own story on why you give to United Way and why you would encourage your friends to do the same.

Thank you for your advocacy and support.

Your United Way Team

We are looking forward to celebrating the holidays with our loved ones, wrapping up the year and hope to have a successful 2013. You are probably doing the same, but many in our community aren't as fortunate.

Together, we can help them in 2013 by donating to United Way by Dec. 31, 2012. Your donation to United Way is tax deductible.

Some facts to ponder:
Almost 13,000 children in United Way's six-county area are not certain where their next meal will come from, and more than 15,000 of our older adults are in need of a nutritious meal.

And, in the six counties served by United Way of East Central Iowa, 36 percent of families with children under the age of 18 do not earn a wage that meets their basic living expenses.
