Civil War Wedding Commemoration was a hit!

In February 1864, James Madison's great- great-niece married in the Parlor of her home - now the Holladay House Bed and Breakfast.

June 2014, 150 years later, in the same room the Civil War wedding was held, the Holladay House Bed and Breakfast celebrated with a Civil War Fashion program and tea reception.

A packed audience enjoyed the following program:

  • Celebrated master seamstress and reenactor, Connie Clowers, presented her Civil War Fashion program discussing the dress of the day, how the styles changed from hoop to bustle, and tricks of dressing historically.
  • From an 1860s family cookbook recipe, an era- and seasonally-appropriate winter wedding cake was devoured by the attendees. The cake was accented by tea sandwiches and treats, coffee and tea.
  • The men were escorted onto the side porch and regaled by reenactor, Larry Clowers, with a gentleman's program, while Connie presented "Instructions to the Victorian Bride" to the women in the Parlor.

DID YOU MISS IT?: The event is now a series!  The next program is scheduled for March 28, 2015 at 1pm and again at 4pm. This program will discuss male clothing, etiquette and stories of life during that period.  Email us to sign up!

And speaking of history...
We were honored to host Holladay family descendants at the Civil War Commemoration.  Not only were three generations of descendants in attendance, they allowed us to showcase Mrs. Doctor Holladay's wedding dress (1892) and her daughter, Helen's, wedding dress (1933) during the program!  The 1933 dress is the same one in the wedding photo in the Parlor.

The dresses turned the event into a Historic wedding commemoration celebration!

At the conclusion of the day, Pat Bankhead (Helen's daughter) surprised us with a present: the original Holladay vases shown in the 1930s wedding dress photo.  They currently reside on the mantel in the Parlor.
Back to Blogging
After a hiatus, we are excited to announce we are back to blogging!

Kim Barr, our esteemed employee of over four years, has expanded her role here at the inn.  She is now our principal contributor to the HHBB Blog.

Given her interest in writing and photography (she claims that she prefers to "take pictures of landscapes but not people, because landscapes don't say Cheese on command"), we thought she'd be perfect. So, please check out our blog and comment freely!
