Dear Friends of Whole Grains,

As we trudge through some of the coldest days of the year, few experiences beat sitting down to cozy comfort foods shared amongst friends and family. Luckily for us, rich and robust whole grains are the perfect ingredient to keep our bellies full and our bodies warm.

Spicy curries and chilis served over steaming brown rice, millet, or sorghum are some of our favorite winter meals, but we're also partial to whole grain baked goods, such as the ones featured in this issue. With recipes like these on the menu, winter can hardly last long enough.

WHOLE GRAIN RICH IN SCHOOLS ROLLED BACK TO 80%

person eating sandwich The Senate Agriculture Committee approved a bill that would dial back the whole grain requirements in school lunches to 80% whole grain rich (in other words, only 40% of the grains have to be whole grain). Learn more here.
THINK GLUTEN-FREE DIETS HELP ATHLETES? THINK AGAIN

In a small Australian study of non-celiac athletes, researchers found no difference in time trial performance of athletes on either a gluten-free or a gluten containing diet, nor were there differences in markers of inflammation or intestinal injury. Learn more about the study here.

PLAN YOUR WHOLE GRAIN SAMPLING DAY EVENT

To encourage clients, patients, and customers to make healthier food choices in 2016, plan a Whole Grain Sampling Day event for March 30, 2016! If you have not done so already, please contact Kelly Toups at [email protected] to learn more about how you can get involved.

And don't forget, even if whole grains and health aren't part of your business, Whole Grain Sampling Day is a great excuse to share some of your favorite whole grains with family or friends.

New Hampshire Zucchini Bread
Early in the morning at Oldways, we salivate over the smell of this bread warming in the toaster oven, and secretly hope that there will be enough to sample.

NEWS FROM OUR FRIENDS

February is Cancer Prevention Month
Evidence suggests that the synergy of different foods and nutrients working together offers the strongest cancer protection, so it is no surprise that whole grains are an important part of the cancer fighting pack. To read more about cancer prevention, learn from our friends at the American Institute for Cancer Research.

February is Bake for Family Fun Month
Each February, the Home Baking Association celebrates Bake for Family Fun Month. Join in the fun by baking a whole grain recipe with friends and family, such as one of the recipes featured above, and be sure to check out their Baking with Whole Wheat Flour 101 tip sheet.
