AROUND OLDWAYS

The Oldways Whole Grains Council is just one of the many traditional food programs at Oldways.

October is Vegetarian Awareness Month. To learn more about plant based diets, view our free vegetarian resources and tips, browse our recipes, or check out the vegetarian resources in our webstore, such as our popular 4-Week Vegetarian & Vegan Diet Menu Plan.

Our other heritage pyramids, such as the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, and the African Heritage Diet Pyramid, are also great ways to get more plants on more plates.

Additionally, Taylor, from Florida, our second prize winner, won a $250 gift card to King Arthur Flour. Finally, ten runners up were selected and will receive a full year of Cooking Light magazine. Click here to view all of the winning photos!

HEALTH: REPLACE BUTTER AND REFINED GRAINS WITH WHOLE GRAINS TO CUT HEART DISEASE RISK

Replacing 5% of daily calories from saturated fat (like butter, cream, and red meat) with whole grains is linked to a 9% lower risk of heart disease. Replacing refined grains and added sugars with whole grains is also associated with a significantly lower risk.

HAPPY NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK! (OCT 12-16)

Kids are more motivated to try whole grains (and other healthy foods) when educators reinforce in the classroom what kids are seeing in the cafeteria. Check out our whole grain lesson plans and food service recipes to keep the momentum.
GLUTEN FREE DOESN'T MEAN GRAIN FREE

Rice Lentil Salad October is Celiac Awareness Month. While celiac disease only affects about 1% of the population, the vast majority of whole grains are naturally gluten free. Quinoa, brown rice, corn, amaranth, teff, millet, and buckwheat are just a few examples. To learn more about gluten free whole grains, check out this webpage.

Freekeh Soup with Spicy Harissa Shrimp and Dates
Maria Speck shares this recipe from her acclaimed new cookbook, Simply Ancient Grains. Freekeh is a smoky, aromatic wheat that cooks up quickly, and pairs well with the North African flavors.

NEWS FROM OUR FRIENDS
Nothing goes better with whole grain crackers or crusty whole grain bread than a generous hunk of top notch cheese!

Have you ever tried a cheese made with raw milk? Do you know the difference between raw milk and raw milk cheese? We want to hear from you.

Our sister program, the Oldways Cheese Coalition is conducting a survey to learn more about your cheese purchasing habits, specifically about raw milk cheeses. Voice your opinion, and share the survey with friends and family to help us reach a wider audience before our survey closes October 26. Click here to access the short (8-10 minute) survey.

Best regards from all of us at the  Oldways Whole Grains Council,
