Dear Friends of Whole Grains,

It's National Nutrition Month - the perfect time to try a new whole grain. They say that strangers are friends you haven't met yet.  This month, we challenge you to "meet" a new whole grain - maybe teff, amaranth or freekeh for dinner next week?  Not ready to try a new one just yet?  Then try a new way to enjoy an old favorite, like using oats to make a risotto

April 3rd is Whole Grain Sampling Day

The clock's ticking. Just a bit more than two weeks left until  our 2nd annual Whole Grain Sampling Day. We're recruiting everyone reading this newsletter, to join in the celebration.  On April 3, millions of Americans are going to see - and taste - a whole lot of delicious, healthy whole grains everywhere they go: supermarkets, foodservice outlets, restaurants, city streets and more. Can we count you in? Here are some ways you can get involved:

Raise a Toast to Whole Grains at noon
Join our virtual "Whole Grain Toast" at noon EST. Shout out your favorite grain, snap a shot enjoying a whole grain treat and encourage others to join in the fun.  Post pictures or video of your toast on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube and be sure to link to us.  Use our hashtag to connect with others worldwide who'll be taking part, #SampleWholeGrains .

Find a Sampling Event near you
Restaurants, supermarkets, workplace cafés, college campuses, health and institutions near you may well be offering special promotions and giveaways for WGSD. Check out our partnership page for updates of activities happening in your area.

Create your OWN Event

Whole Grains Lower Colorectal Cancer Risk
Earlier this month, as part of March's Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center introduced its new infographic.  With healthy whole grain options, the colorful graphic illustrates snack and meal ideas and portions, reminding the public how foods like whole grains may lower colorectal cancer risks.

The campaign also cites the Whole Grain Stamp as a tool for finding foods with at least 8 grams of whole grains.  Check out the full-size image and story here.

Dr. Oz Says "Look for the Stamp"

The uber-popular health expert, Dr. Oz, told his audience that the Whole Grain Stamp is the best way to tell if a product contains whole grains.  In the segment, "Avoiding Whole Grain Traps," Dr. Oz challenged a studio audience volunteer to distinguish between whole grain and maybe-not-whole-grain products.  For example, which bread is the real whole grain: whole wheat, nine-grain, or multi-grain? Illustrating a common misunderstanding, the volunteer chose the nine-grain bread saying, "Nine is better than one, right?". Dr. Oz explained that a product labeled multi-grain or nine-grain may contain nothing but a variety of refined grains; the words don't guarantee whole grains.   Watch the video of the segment here.

In conclusion, Dr. Oz offered two pieces of advice when looking for whole grain products:
  1. Look for the 100% Whole Grain Stamp
  2. Check the ingredients list and make sure the word "whole" is in front of the grains listed

What's Happening at Oldways
Oldways Hosts 3rd Annual Supermarket Symposium
Oldways is committed to finding ways for supermarkets and manufacturers to work together to highlight the healthiest foods possible. With that in mind, the Oldways team met recently in Dallas to share tables and talks with forty-three supermarket dietitians and retail health and wellness advisors, plus representatives from twenty sponsoring companies committed to changing the face of public health in America.

Sessions on social media, biotech foods, sustainable seafood, and nutrition trends and myths were popular, as was the workshop on media training - all organized by Oldways to help Supermarket RDs do their crucial work. Read more about the conference here.

Best regards from all of us at Oldways and the Whole Grains Council,
