Dear Friends of Whole Grains,
A Calvin and Hobbes cartoon circled the office last week that made us chuckle.   Hobbes was confused about New Year's resolutions and asked Calvin to explain.  Trying to find the simplest way possible to define them, he answered, "They are To Do lists for the first week of January."

As we begin a new year, our wish is for you to be happy and healthy with strategies you can keep going all year long - not just for a week.  Learn more about the Oldways credo of healthy eating here.

NEW Product Search Function

One of the most popular sections of the WGC website has long been our Stamped Products page, where you can search for foods using the Stamp. But, with over 8,000 products in our database sorted into just a handful of product categories, searches here had become unwieldy.  Many of you asked for an easier way to find products and we listened.

After months of work behind the scenes, we are excited to unveil our new search!  Now when you click on Find Stamped Products, you are given more specific categories to choose from, making the process much more user-friendly.  You can also select the country in which you want to find products and even more exciting, you can narrow your search even further with three additional criteria options: gluten-free, sprouted grain and foodservice.

Already, we are getting great feedback, like this email from last week:
"I wanted to drop you a note to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE your website. I'm newly diagnosed as gluten-intolerant.  So all my whole grain knowledge and sleuthing of processed food products is out the drain and I have to start all over.  But your site's Stamped Product List (with the ability to refine for gluten-free items) has made my search for ingredients that much easier."  ~Lisa

Go ahead and check it out now or just bookmark the page so the next time you're looking for great whole grain products, you'll have the right tool at your fingertips.

Kamut Shows Intriguing Health Benefits

We keep a close eye on health studies involving whole grains, and one from Italy jumped out at us this month. Scientists in Florence asked 22 healthy adults to eat pasta, bread and crackers made with Kamut® (Khorasan wheat) for eight weeks, then, after a washout period, to switch to pasta, bread and crackers made from semi-whole wheat. During the Kamut phase, participants showed significant improvements in several health markers, including cholesterol, blood glucose and inflammation, leading the scientists to conclude that "a replacement diet with Kamut products could be effective in reducing metabolic risk factors."

Consumer Question:
How does a product qualify for the 100% Stamp?

"Since flax is not considered a whole grain, how is a bread with flax given the 100% Whole Grain Stamp?"

In order for a product to qualify for use of the
WG Stamp 100% Stamp in the US, all the grain ingredients must be whole.  The oilseeds (flax, chia, sesame, etc.) do not count toward or against the 100% designation.  In other countries, such as Canada, the rules are different.  Only those products where ALL ingredients are whole grain -- no added salt, oil, nuts, raisins or anything else -- will qualify for the 100% Stamp.

The function of the Whole Grain Stamp is solely to indicate whether a product contains whole grains and how much.
