Born Lau is a winner of Astral Artists' 2012 National Auditions. He was awarded the 2013 Prix Musique de Chambre at the American School in Fontainebleu, France, and captured the top prize at both the 2009 Artist Series of Sarasota Scholarship Competition and the 2008 Music Society of Coral Lakes Scholarship Award. He has been a prizewinner at the 2014 Primrose International Viola Competition and the Hellam Young Artists' Schmidbauer International Strings, and Artists Series of Sarasota competitions. The enterprising artist also recently organized a fundraising concert for UNICEF.
Praised for his "immaculately refined" playing (The Philadelphia Inquirer), violist Born Lau has appeared internationally as both a soloist and chamber musician. The current Principal Violist of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Lau was invited to appear as the Guest Principal Violist of San Diego Symphony in the 2012-2013 season. He has performed as soloist with the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra, the New Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Dreyfoos Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Colburn Orchestra, and appeared as soloist in Hong Kong in the summer of 2011. He has appeared at the Yellow Barn and Sarasota Music festivals and at Switzerland's Verbier Festival Academy, and performs as violist of the Tallis String Quartet.
Originally from Hong Kong, Born Lau graduated from high school in West Palm Beach, Florida. He began studying the violin at the age of seven and the viola at eleven. His past private teachers include Richard Fleischman, Karen Tuttle, and Evan Wilson, and he studied chamber music with Ronald Leonard, John Perry, and Arnold Steinhardt. Mr. Lau holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Paul Coletti. He currently studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with Roberto Diaz, and has given master classes at Temple Music Prep and the New World School of the Arts.
American pianist George Fu has been a frequent participant in numerous international and national piano competitions. Some highlights include: First Place, 2009 Blount-Slawson National Concerto Competition in Montgomery, AL; First Place, 2008 National Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition in Washington, D.C.; First Place, 2008 MTNA National Senior Piano Duet Competition in Denver, CO; Most recently, George Fu has been a semifinalist in the Busoni International Piano Competition (Aug 2011) and the Hilton Head International Piano Competition (Mar 2012). He had his orchestral debut in 2009 with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., playing Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, and has performed concerti with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Curtis Lab Orchestra, the Bach Society Orchestra at Harvard University and many others. Mr. Fu also studies composition and conducting. As a composer, Mr. Fu has studied with Carolyn Lamb Booth, Richard Beaudoin, and David Ludwig, and he has won several awards for his solo piano compositions. George served as the 2012-2013 Music Director of the Dunster House Opera of Harvard University, conducting a production of Jules Massenet's Cendrillon. He has studied conducting under Sean Newhouse and Federico Cortese. A native of Frederick, MD, George graduated with a bachelor's degree from Harvard University. He is currently pursuing an artist diploma in piano performance at the Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of Meng-Chieh Liu.
