Has Your Fire for God Diminished

2 Timothy 1:1-11New American Standard Bible (NASB)

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. 5For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. 8

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, 10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.

1- Has your excitement about the Lord grown with time?

Or has your enthusiasm faded over the years?

  • Maturing in Christ should cause the flame of your faith to grow stronger, not weaker.
  • Caution: The flame of your devotion to Christ can die out.

A-Even Timothy became discouraged. When the young pastor faced difficult circumstances, Paul encouraged him to fan the flame of his devotion for God (2 Tim. 1:1-11).

B-Warnings against False Teachings 1 Timothy 1:1-11

  • When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.
  • Don't let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don't help people live a life of faith in God.

2- Cooling off spiritually happens two ways.

  • A Christian's faith can be doused suddenly by devastating circumstances,
  • Or it can dwindle gradually through a loss of interest in spiritual things.

3 - You neglect the Word of God.

What wood is to a fire, the Word of God is to your Christian life. As a follower of Christ, you can't live effectively without it.

  • Psalm 37:31The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
  • Psalm 119:11 (Meditation) 11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
  • Psalm 119:97-101 (Benefits) 97 O how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.
4- Your prayer life changes.

You begin to feel that God isn't listening.

  • Rom 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
  • Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

5- Your church attendance becomes sporadic.

You start making excuses not to go.

  • Hebrews 10: 24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
  • Psalm 122: 1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.
  • WHERE YOU ARE DETERMINES WHAT GROWS INSIDE OF YOU

6-You give less consistently.
You begin to feel that you can't afford to sacrifice much to God.

  • Luke 12:15, 34: 15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
  • Giving is the only proof you have overcome Greed
  • Amos 3: 10"My people have forgotten how to do right," says the Lord. "Their fortresses are filled with wealth taken by theft and violence. 11Therefore," says the Sovereign Lord, an enemy is coming! He will surround them and shatter their defenses. Then he will plunder all their fortresses."

7-You become defensive about your lifestyle.
You rationalize making compromises.

  • 1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

8-You begin to lose your joy.

Serving the Lord becomes a duty instead of a passion. Worry and fear replace your joy.

  • Psalm 16:11Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

9-You begin to doubt God.

  • Hebrews 3:12, 19 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. What is evidence of a cooling flame?

10-You stop paying attention to the Holy Spirit's promptings.

  • Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. 14Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

11-How Do You Recover the Fire?

A. Recognize your condition. Ask yourself, has my fire gone out?

  • 2 Cor. 13:5 examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test? (NIV)
  • Lamentations 3:40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.

B-Recall a season of life when you were passionate about God. What was it like? How did you spend  your time?

  • Jonah 2:7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
  • 3-Repent. Losing devotion to Jesus is usually a direct result of sin.
  • Revelation 2:5 Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don't repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches. (NLT)
C-Refocus your attention on the Lord
  • (Philippians 3:13-14) Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

D-Read the Word of God. Start with a short book of the New Testament, and ask the Lord to speak through it as you read.

  • Psalms 63:1-2 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

E-Seek God daily in prayer.

Go beyond praying for what you need or want. Seek an intimate relationship with Him.

  • Hebrews 11:6 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. (ESV)

F-Get involved in someone Else's life.

Your problems will consume you if you let them. Take the focus off yourself, and meet another person's needs.

  • Phil 2: 1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

G-Rely on the Holy Spirit to enable you.

  • 2 Cor. 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds ;)

Closing

  • Because our hope is in Christ...we can let go of past guilt and look forward to what He will help us become.
  • Don't dwell on your past. Instead, grow in the knowledge of God by concentrating on our relationship with Him now. Sometimes we, as Christians, stray from God in our hearts, grow weary in well doing, and grow slack in our commitment.
  • It is during these times that our lives seem to get out of focus. We fail to see that we are heading in a direction contrary to God's direction for our lives.
  • Philippians 4:6 be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
