Our Text:
Psalm 91 The Message (MSG)
91 1-13 You who sit down in the High God's presence, spend the night in Shaddai's shadow, Say this: "God, you're my refuge. I trust in you and I'm safe!" That's right-he rescues you from hidden traps, shields you from deadly hazards. His huge outstretched arms protect you- under them you're perfectly safe; his arms fend off all harm. Fear nothing-not wild wolves in the night, not flying arrows in the day, Not disease that prowls through the darkness, not disaster that erupts at high noon. Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you. You'll stand untouched, watch it all from a distance, watch the wicked turn into corpses. Yes, because God's your refuge, the High God your very own home, Evil can't get close to you, harm can't get through the door. He ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go. If you stumble, they'll catch you; their job is to keep you from falling. You'll walk unharmed among lions and snakes, and kick young lions and serpents from the path.
14-16 "If you'll hold on to me for dear life," says God, "I'll get you out of any trouble. I'll give you the best of care if you'll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I'll answer, be at your side in bad times; I'll rescue you, then throw you a party. I'll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation!"
Introduction:
1. Here's a Psalm for those that walk with God
a. To them it's more than a religious profession
b. Their hearts have been fixed on God
c. Their purpose is to know and serve Him
2. Spurgeon gave a conclusion about these people.
a. "Only those who know the love of God in Christ Jesus come into the secret Place of the Most High. For those who are there, 'to live is Christ, and to die is gain' (Phil. 1:21)"
b. How do we measure up to Spurgeon's conclusion?
3. What can we see in this Shadow of the Almighty?
I. He is my Refuge (v. 2)
A. The Believer finds the Lord is his hiding place
1. He is a place to hide when storms assail
2. He is a place to hide when others fail
B. See how often the psalmist flees to his refuge
1. Psalm 46:1
2. Psalm 46:7
3. Psalm 62:8
4. Psalm 71:7
C. That trusting one always has a place to hide in a storm.
II. He is my Fortress (v. 2)
A. God provides a place of safety for times of battle
1. Salvation doesn't end times of conflict with Satan
2. Every Christian is at war with the enemy of our souls
B. During these attacks of the enemy, God is our fortress.
1. Satan is limited to what God allows a) I Corinthians 10:13
2. Our safe retreat is the secret place of the Most High
C. Charles Spurgeon wrote these words about the fortress:
1. "Our omnipotent Lord will shield all those who dwell with Him; they will remain in His care as guests under the protection of their host."
III. In Him will I Trust (v. 2)
A. Trust is another word for Faith
1. We have salvation through faith (Eph. 2:8-9)
2. We have been justified by faith (Rom. 5:1)
3. We have peace with God through faith (Rom. 5:1)
B. In whom should we place this faith?
1. The psalmist replied...in "My God"
