SATANIC DEVICES
2 Corinthians 2:1-11

(Key Verse - 2 CORINTHIANS 2:11 "LEST SATAN SHOULD GET AN ADVANTAGE OF US: FOR WE ARE NOT IGNORANT OF HIS DEVICES.")

Introduction:. "Satan" means "adversary." The Bible refers to the devil by a number of names and descriptions.

  • He is seen as "the anointed cherub" (Ezek. 28:14),
  • "the ruler of demons" (Luke 11:15),
  • "the ruler of this world" (John 16:11),
  • "the god of this world" (2 Cor. 4:4), and
  • "the prince of the power of the air" (Eph 2:2).

He is identified as a great dragon, a roaring lion, the vile one, the tempter, and the accuser. He is formidable, cunning, and powerful.

Paul writing to the Corinthian church realized that Satan was working overtime in the church and emphasizes that we are to be vigilant and alert to his subtlety. Satan's advantage is based upon one being ignorant of his devices or his methods.

What are some of the devil's devices by which he seeks to deceive God's children, defeat God's church, destroy God's work, and denigrate God's Word? His methods include distraction, discouragement, disillusionment, discontentment, discord, and disassociation.

I. Distraction
A. 1 John 2:15-16 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."
B. Satan seeks to distract us by getting us to focus our attention on the material instead of the spiritual, on methods rather than the message, on men rather than God.
C. 2 Timothy 2:4 "No man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."
D. If Satan can, he will get us to major on the minors and to minimize the majors.
E. It was a 99-degree September day in San Antonio, when a woman accidentally locked her 10 month-old baby niece inside a parked car. Frantically the mother and aunt ran around the auto in near hysteria, while a neighbor attempted to unlock the car with a clothes hanger. Soon the infant was turning purple and had foam on her mouth. It had become a life-or-death situation when Fred Arriola, a wrecker driver, arrived on the scene. He grabbed a hammer and smashed the back window of the car to set her free. Was he heralded a hero? He said, "The lady was mad at me because I broke the window. I just thought, what's more important--the baby or the window?" Sometimes priorities get out of order, and a Fred Arriola reminds us what's important.

F. Satan seeks to get our priorities out of kilter.

G. Colossians 3:2 "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."

H. Whenever we place a higher priority on solving our problems than on pursuing God, we are immoral.

I. Hebrews 12:2 "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

II. Discouragement
A
. One of Satan's most potent weapons is trying to get you into a feeling of discouragement, so maybe you'll give up. Discouragement is a lack of hope usually after a major victory. Many are confronted with it on Monday after a breakthrough on Sunday. The Devil wants you to believe that things are worse than what they are and that you are the only one who cares. That is exactly how Elijah felt after his victory on Mt Carmel.
B. Sometimes it is people that discourage us - Deuteronomy 1:28 "Whither shall we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, 'The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there'."
C. A man who is continually criticized becomes good for nothing; the effect of criticism knocks all the gumption and power out of him.

D. Sometimes it's circumstances that discourage us - Numbers 21:4-5 "And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loathes this light bread."
E. Discouragement is faith in the devil.
F. Galatians 6:9 - "And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't get discouraged and give up."
G. The perpetual endeavor of the enemy of souls is discouragement. If he can get the soul "under the weather," he wins. It is not really what we go through that matters, it is what we go under that breaks us. We can bear anything if only we are kept inwardly victorious. ... If God can make His birds to whistle in drenched and stormy darkness, if He can make His butterflies able to bear up under rain, what can He not do for the heart that trusts Him?

III. Disillusionment
A. Disillusionment is the state of being disenchanted or disappointed by unfulfilled expectations.
B. Proverbs 13:12 "Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life."
C. Have some of your carefully created castles been washed away? Mine have. Several times along my life's journey, I had nowhere to turn except into my heavenly Father's arms. There I remained quiet, soaking up his love for as long as I needed. Then I saw his hand begin a new creation for my life, a new direction, a new service for him and his kingdom. Waves need not always destroy. We must allow our heavenly Father to use them to redirect our lives.
D. If you expect perfection from people, your whole life is a series of disappointments, grumblings, and complaints. If, on the contrary, you pitch your expectations low, taking folks as the inefficient creatures, which they are, you are frequently surprised by having them perform better than you had hoped. - Bruce Fairfield Barton (1886-1967).
E. 1 Corinthians 11:1 "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ."
F. There are no disappointments to those whose wills are buried in the will of God.
G. When Gene Smith wrote his book about the life of Herbert Hoover, he entitled it The Shattered Dream. Many lesser figures have also experienced shattered dreams. In fact it is a rare person who has not, at least once in life, known a shattered dream. The question is, "Do we keep on working, do we keep on dreaming, and do we keep our spirits high?"

H. Philippians 1:21 "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

IV. Discontentment
A. Numbers 21:5-6 "And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loathes this light bread. And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died."
B. The children of Israel did not find in the manna all the sweetness and strength they might have found in it; not because the manna did not contain them, but because they longed for other meat. Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591)
C. 1 Corinthians 10:10 "Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer."
D. Half the world is unhappy because it can't have the things that are making the other half unhappy.
E. Complainers are the greatest persecutors. Samuel Butler (1612-1680)
F. If Christians spent as much time praying as they do grumbling, they would have nothing to grumble about.
G. Philippians 2:14 "Do all things without murmurings and disputings"
H. Christians are like autos--when they begin to knock, there is something wrong inside.
I. James 5:8-9 "Be ye also patient; establish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord is drawing nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge stands before the door."
J. Nine requisites for contented living:

  1. Health enough to make work a pleasure;
  2. Wealth enough to support your needs;
  3. Strength to battle with difficulties and overcome them;
  4. Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them;
  5. Patience enough to toil until some good is accomplished;
  6. Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor;
  7. Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others;
  8. Faith enough to make real the things of God;
  9. Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.

K. Colossians 3:17 "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."

V. Discord (division)
A. 1 Corinthians 1:10-11
"Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you."
B. There are four ways the devil brings about division in the church.

  1. He uses Selfishness,
  2. Favoritism,
  3. Narrow-mindedness,
  4. and Lack of Fellowship

C. Selfishness says; do it my way or no way.

Favoritism says; our way is better than your way.

Narrow-mindedness says; we've never done it that way.

Lack of Fellowship says; you go your way and I'll go my way.

D. Romans 12:3-5 "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure
of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another."
E. The secret of every discord in Christian homes and communities and churches is that we seek our own way and our own glory.
F. It is too bad that anything so obvious should need to be said at this late date, but from all appearances, we Christians have about forgotten the lesson so carefully taught by Paul: God's servants are not to be competitors, but co-workers.

G. Philippians 1:27 "Only let your conversation be as it becomes the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;"

VI. Disassociation

A. Hebrews 10:25 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
B. The devil loves when believers do not fellowship: he loves it when we distance ourselves from each other.
C. 1 Corinthians 12:18-21 "But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you."

1 Corinthians 12:25 "That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another."
D. Communion is strength; solitude is weakness. Alone, the eland is an easy target for the stalking lion. The devil would like to isolate believers just like predators separate their prey from the herd thereby weakening it and easily killing and devouring it.
E. 1 Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:"
F. Churchgoers are like coals in a fire. When they cling together, they keep the flame aglow; when they separate, they die out. - Billy Graham, evangelist.
G. Community ... means people who have to learned how to care for each other.
Christ has given us an alternative: to forgive each other for the pokes we receive. That allows us to stay together and stay warm.

CONCLUSION: This morning has Satan been working overtime in your life? Has he been able to distract you? Has he gotten you majoring on minors with priorities out of alignment with God's? Has he gotten you discouraged, feeling like you are in the battle alone? Have you become disillusioned and disenchanted? Have others disappointed you? Have your dreams and plans failed to come to fruition? Have you allowed a spirit of discontentment to slip into your life? Do you find yourself grumbling and complaining? Has Satan brought discord into your life with its "us" and "them" attitude? Is Satan working on you to have you disassociate and isolate yourself?

Ephesians 4:27 tells us, "Neither give place to the devil." This morning, will you come and let God give you the victory over the devil's devices?

We humans and sin

Sin....a horrible word, isn't it? Nobody wants to hear that we have sin us. We'd rather listen to anything else but a preaching of sin. True? And, it is not a very popular teaching nowadays, yet very relevant. It is the essence of Christianity and the very reason why God sent His Only Begotten Son on the Cross --- for salvation to those who believe and obey Him and ----for condemnation of the sin in this world because the world and the people following the world do not believe.

We humans, many people, think we do not have sin...only bad people have sin, we think and believe this way, most people do, because we think we are pretty good people... don't we? We think there are bad people in this world, pagans or sinful, or criminals, we call them, and they have sin, but we, some of us think that, we, normal people, nice people,  we do not have sin, and that is how we see things. Some of us say because we believe, or are religious, or good caring people, there is no way we have sin in us. Sin is not a pretty word.

Yet, here comes the truth: God says in His Word-in the Bible- we all have sin in us. WE ALL!  We were born with sin in us-we were born through flesh and blood. And, the Bible teaches us that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. The only one that was not born of flesh and blood, but through Holy Spirit- is Jesus Christ.  Why cannot flesh and blood inherit the Kingdom of God? Because of sin ruling in them.  The only one that can inherit Kingdom of God is Jesus Christ, and the ones who are found in Him, through rebirth through His Spirit, the ones who have through belief and obedience received salvation from sin power in them, salvation from self-ruling-sin- that exists in flesh and blood.  So, as long as we allow sin to rule in us, there is no inheritance for us in the Kingdom of God. Want to hear more?

The sin in us makes us do things that are not acceptable to God, actually truly horrifying to God. That is why He sent His Only Son to

  • the Cross-to save us from the sin power in us, so that we could live eternally in His Kingdom where no one ruled by sin can enter. Sin in us makes as serve ourselves or/and other human beings rather than God Himself. And, truly, it is only God's standards and His views of sin that matter. Think about it. He is the great Judge and He is the great Salvation.

We all have opinions, there are millions of different opinions in this world, and so many think their views are right. Yet, only one opinion matters really, and that is the one of God's-one of Jesus Christ's. He is the God Himself. The Bible-God's Word is the only Truth. We humans fail in so many levels in regards to God's standards, and, yet, this should not be the way, and it would not be, if we cared to listen to God and obey Him and stop listening ourselves and the opinions of this world and turn to Him for Wisdom and Salvation.  As the Bible states we all have sin, and if we allow the sin-flesh and blood-the dirt in our hearts to rule in us, there is no inheritance in to God's Kingdom. Know this. Either sin rules in us or Jesus Christ rules in us.

  • Do you believe God or do you believe yourself and the world?

Until we seek God, we all have a veil before our eyes and we do not see it-we do not see the sin in us, regardless how religious we think we are. The veil will only be removed by belief, through turning away from world's ways and seeking God Himself whom is found in Jesus Christ. He will reveal to us the truth of our hearts; the sin and the sins in us....the dirt in our hearts! This is the truth. We all have sin in us. It is only the current circumstances or our upbringing that the sin might not show outward to people, yet it still exists in our hearts and in our flesh. Think about it. And, really, if the circumstances would change drastically, think about, we all would be capable of even killing another human being, even a family member or even commit adultery. We might deny it now, and, say no way, yet, it is the truth. There is sin in us deeply rooted in our flesh and heart. The only way to prevent this is if we have received God's own Power- Holy Spirit and allow Him to rule in us, and through His Power nail the sin power on the cross, so it becomes powerless.

God created us for himself and our thoughts and minds should rest on Him and His Word 24/7. And, where do our minds and hearts wonder? Does it rest on God's Truths-His Word-the Bible, or is it mostly wrapped with worldly stuff? Is His Word living in us?

Did you know that an act of sin is not only as we humans see sin, let's say adultery, but sin as bad as adultery in God's standards is a dirty thought in our mind, a lustful wrong look at a woman or man.  You might think that God cannot blame us for our thoughts, and they are not really sins you might think because we do not act upon them, or we are not hurting anybody by them. Know, that you are hurting yourself.. .you are building sin upon sin on yourself by allowing the sin power to rule in you, unless you turn to God's Salvation-Jesus Christ and receive forgiveness and allow Him to rule in you. You might say that those are ridiculous standards, yet, they are God's standards. A sin is a sin whether we act upon it or not outwardly. The sin is in our hearts, blood and flesh. And, we hurt ourselves by allowing the sin power to rule in us. How hurting? Remember, people ruled by sin cannot inherit God's Kingdom. The more you allow sin to rule in you, the further you might go from salvation God is offering you.  God created us for Himself, not for ourselves. Come to Me and stop sinning, He call everyone.

 He is calling us all to turn and repent and receive forgiveness and receive His Power not to follow the sin power in us-the self- that causes us to sin against God in our thoughts and in our hearts regardless if people see our acts, but know this that God does see them all. Yes, God sees the sins in us, and judges us accordingly. He sees if we live this life ruled by ourselves-the sin-flesh and blood, or ruled by Jesus Christ. And, that is what matters ultimately-how God sees things. Sin is a sin whether we act upon on it or not outwardly. It lives in our hearts and thoughts, unless we turn to God-His Salvation-Jesus Christ, and receive His Power and kill the sin power in us through God's own Power-Holy Spirit.

Again, sin in us makes us do things that are horrifying to God, even though they might be pleasing to ourselves or to other people in our and their eyes.  The sin makes us not see as God sees, unless we abandon ourselves to His ruling. These sins can look good, yet very horrifying to God. God's standards are completely different in regards to sins. We need to deal with the sin issue in us through belief in Christ by turning to Jesus Christ, repenting and receiving salvation through His Cross before we can see what our personal sins are in our heart, in our flesh and through God's Holy Spirit Power kill them in us through "crucifying them on the cross"-through obedience to Jesus Christ as Hedirects us. We will still have sin, yet through God's Power, it has no hold, no power, in us if we obey Jesus Christ, and then through obedience consequently we stop sinning and our lives become pleasing to God.  How? Because through obedience to God's Son, through Him living in us and because He cannot sin, He is pure, we stop sinning. If we obey Him, we stop sinning. Very simple.  Our bad thoughts and sin acts are replaced by God's Word living in us, by His good deeds and worship toward Him.

This is the gospel.

Not a single one person that has not received salvation will enter God's Kingdom. No impure can enter, only the pure in heart who have cleansed themselves from the sin acts and received salvation from the control of the sin power in them through Holy Spirit- in belief- through the Cross of Jesus Christ and through obedience to Jesus Christ by allowing Jesus Christ-God's Word- to live in them. "I do not live anymore, but Jesus Christ lives in me"---this is the true rebirth into God's Kingdom.

The real fact is that sin separates us from God, unless we get pardoned by God, and receive salvation and power not to obey the sin in us through God's salvation to us, Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit Power. Sin is unbelief, it is self that wants to self-rule and not be ruled by God; it does not want to be dependent on God in everything; being religious and doing good human works is enough. The sin ruling makes us not to rely on God just as a child relies on a parent.

Know that the only one that was not born with sin is Jesus Christ, because He was conceived through Holy Spirit, and He is the Son of God, completely Holy and Pure and He is our Salvation-the only salvation- from sin power and from ourselves.  Is sin ruling in you-in your self- in flesh and blood- or is Jesus Christ-God's Word- ruling in you and living in you, living in your heart? He cannot live in you as long as sin rules in you. He is so Pure and Holy. Now is the time of salvation.
