Here's What the Chamber Has Been Doing This Week to Promote Catalina Island and YOUR Business
- Sent out a special New Year's Eve blast to past attendees and NYE contest entries. New Year's Eve Gala reservations are now available, starting July 1st.
- Assisted with 5 film permits and answered questions regarding 2 more film projects.
- Assisted with 2 travel writers.
- Be sure to link to the new Google Catalina Calendar of Events or embed the new Google Catalina Calendar into your website to get up to date information on events in Avalon.
- KMEX/Univision who was here filming for a Catalina story in June broadcast the segment on last week's Wed. and Thursday 11pm news. Here are the 5 video links.

- Held our Annual Chamber Meeting and Officer Installation Dinner on July 11th. Please see below for more information.
- Did you enjoy this year's 4th of July fireworks display? The Chamber is still accepting donations for the fireworks. A big THANK YOU to those who have already contributed. Please see below for more information.

1. Flyers in the Thursday Update are free for all members and will be posted for up to 4 weeks unless otherwise noted. For inclusion, please send your jpg file to Amelia Lincoln by Wednesday at noon.
2. Please send us "Catalina Hot Deals" or "Island Time Packages". Be sure to get the additional FREE exposure to your business!
3. Please send us your restaurant, tour, activity, etc. information so we can continue to add it to This Week on Catalina on our website.
4. Please post the QR code for "What's Happening This Week" in your place of business. Need it again? A sheet with the QR Code and instructions is available at the Visitor Center.
5. Check the Birthday Island web page for birthday offers, found under Specials and Packages on the Chamber's website. If you have an offer you'd like to give to Birthday Guests, contact Elaine or Frances at Catalina Express 310-519-7971.

| Chamber Installs New Officers & Directors |

Kevin Strege, Catalina Island Vacation Rentals, was installed as the Chamber's Chairman of the Board for 2013-14 at the Chamber's 64th Annual Meeting and Installation on Thursday, July 11. Kevin succeeds Rock Gosselin, The Avalon Hotel. Rock will continue to serve on the Chamber's Board as Immediate Past Chair.
Joining Kevin and Rock on the Executive Committee for 2013-14 are:
- Chair-Elect: Bill Paige, Leo's Catalina Drug Store
- Vice Chair-Marketing: Juliet Walters, Catalina By Design
- Chief Financial Officer: Cinde Cassidy, Catalina Business Services
- President/CEO & Secretary: Wayne Griffin
David Howell, Island Navigation and Ray McKewon, The Xceptional Music Company were installed as new directors for a three year term. Steve Bray, Steve's Steakhouse, and Cinde Cassidy, Catalina Business Services, were reelected to a 2nd three year term as directors. |
| Catalina Island Vacation Rentals awarded Harvey Cowell Business of the Year | |
During the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce Installation of Officers dinner on July 11, the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce awarded a Catalina organization the "Harvey Cowell Business of the Year." This award was established in honor of Harvey Cowell, one of the original founders of the Catalina Chamber and recognizes an extraordinary contribution by a business to the furtherance of tourism to Avalon and Catalina Island. Last year's recipient, Catalina Express, represented by Elaine Vaughan, presented this year's award to Catalina Island Vacation Rentals for continually donating to, advertising for, and sponsoring events on the Island. Accepting the award on behalf of the company was Kevin Strege.

Mr. Steve Snyder from the California Chamber of Commerce was present at the Catalina Chamber of Commerce Installation of Officers dinner on July 11 to give the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce a President's Circle award for "Outstanding Achievement as an Advocacy Partner and in Helping Businesses Comply with California Labor Laws." The award is presented to 27 chambers statewide this year, making the Catalina Island Chamber in the Top 10% of Chambers. Mr. Wayne Griffin, CEO of the Chamber accepted the award.

| Water Conservation - It's the LAW! | |
Phase 1 water rationing is now in effect, and Southern California Edison Company has free materials to help you communicate the necessity to conserve fresh water to your customers. A laminated sheet informs lodging guests about water and energy saving techniques, while a table tent promotes general water and energy conservation.
Both documents are available free of charge at the Chamber's Visitor Center on the Green Pleasure Pier and at City Hall.
Phase 1 Water Rationing:
- Restaurants & bars may not serve water to customers unless the customer requests water. Businesses are required to post a notice;
- Washing of streets, sidewalks, patios, piers, walkways, etc. is prohibited except by use of a 3 gallon bucket;
- Washing of motor vehicles is prohibited except by use of a 3 gallon bucket;
- Watering of outdoor landscaping by hoses or sprinkler system shall be limited to the hours of 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 5:00 to 7:00 pm during the period Pacific Daylight Time is in effect.

The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitor's Bureau would like to thank our members for their past participation on our marketing organization.
The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitor's Bureau is the only island organization that exists solely to promote Catalina Island and your business- day in and day out, all year long. We hope that you will continue to work with us in growing sales for your business and tax revenues for our community. All current members should have received (or be receiving) a membership renewal invoice for the 2013-14 year (July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014). Membership renewals are due no later than July 31, 2013.
Members should also have received a data verification form. PLEASE make sure that we have the correct information for you and your business. Contact Carmen Chavez if you need further assistance or have any questions.

We are now able to add social media icons in your Chamber website listing that will link directly to your Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or other social media outlets. These icons are available for the following social platforms: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, Flickr, Google+, Instagram, and Foursquare. Once enabled, these icons allow visitors looking at your chamber listing to link directly to your social media page on any of the platforms that you select. See the image below for an idea of what these icons look like on your listing. If you would like one or more of these icons added to your website listing, please feel free to email Amelia. | 4th of July Fireworks Donations | 
Please join us in sponsoring this year's 4th of July fireworks display!
Our annual fireworks display is the only Chamber activity of the entire year not fully supported through our marketing and promotion budget: We need your financial support to allow us to cover the cost of this celebration without taking away from our advertising and promotional programs. The cost of this year's fireworks program is $20,000! A contribution of just $100 from each member business will completely cover the cost of our fireworks display! To charge your donation to a credit card, please go to www.catalinachamber.com/fireworks. Your contribution is really a "thank you" to our visitors who make it possible for us to live and work in paradise all year.

Would YOUR business like to host a mixer in 2013?
Does your business have a new product or service you would like to promote to local residents? Have a recent remodel or renovation you want to show off? Hosting a Chamber Mixer is a great way to showcase your business to locals.
Chamber Mixers are available on the 3rd Thursday of each month (except where noted) from 6 to 8 pm. The Chamber's goal is to offer at least 6 mixer opportunities in 2013. The Mixer host receives a reimbursement of 50% of the fee collected per attendee to help offset the costs of food and beverage.
