Chamber Hires New Staff Member

The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce announces the hiring of Amelia Lincoln for the newly  created Event and Electronic Marketing Manager position at the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce.

 Amelia Lincoln

The Catalina Island Chamber began a search for the new position in September. The new manager will assist in the coordination, marketing, and promotion of Island events, such as the Flying Fish Festival, the New Year's Eve Gala, Chamber mixers and other island events. The position will also assist in the management of the Chamber's website, email communications and social media activities.

The Chamber received numerous resumes from all over the nation. A small committee reviewed the applicants and after a creative event exercise was completed and reviewed, the committee selected Amelia Lincoln.

Amelia hails from Chester, CT and will be moving to the Island and will begin working at the Catalina Island Chamber on January 10th, 2013. Amelia has a Bachelor's degree in Communications from Hollins University in Virginia and a Master's degree in Tourism Marketing from the University of Surrey in England. Her last position was with Visit Surrey.

"We're excited about having Amelia join our team to promote Catalina as a top Southern California destination. She has youth, enthusiasm and a great positive spirit. I know she will help us achieve our prescribed goal of making us friends, making us famous and making us funds." says Wayne Griffin, CEO and President of the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce.

Catalina Island Has NEW State & Federal Representatives in 2013
Redistricting Results in New Districts, New Representatives

Due to redistricting, Senate districts have a unique issue that Assembly and Congressional districts do not have. Of the Senate districts established by the Citizens Redistricting Commission in 2011, only the odd-numbered districts went into effect for the 2012 election cycle.  The new even-numbered districts will go into effect for the 2014 election cycle, and the even-numbered districts previously established by the 2001 redistricting will continue to exist until 2014. These unique circumstances create some areas of overlap between the old and new districts ("accelerated areas") and some areas without coverage ("deferred areas"). For the 2013-14 Regular Session of the Legislature, each accelerated area essentially has two Senators representing the area and each deferred area has none. The Senate Committee on Rules will assign a Senator to provide appropriate constituent services to each deferred area. This is a normal consequence of the redistricting process.  Catalina Island is a "Deferred Area" and a Senator will be appointed to provide constituent services during the 2013-14 legislative session.

According to the California Senate's website, Catalina Island has been assigned to California's 35th Senate District and is represented by Senator Roderick Wright (DEM).  Senator Wright was elected to the Senate in 2008.  He previously served in the State Assembly from 1996 to 2002.  During the 2012 legislative year, Senator Wright voted in agreement with the CalChamber on 7 of 10 top priority business bills. However, Senator Wright's district office has told the Chamber that Catalina Island is currently represented by . . .

Senator Ted Lieu, (DEM) 28th Senate District. Unfortunately, we have not been able to confirm that Senator Lieu does, in fact, represent the Island.  Senator Lieu is a former Torrance City Councilman, and was first elected to the legislature in 2005.  During the 2012 legislative year, Senator Lieu voted in agreement with the CalChamber on of 2 of 6 top priority business bills (he did not vote on two other bills).  Of the 39 members of the Senate, just 6 had worse "business votes."

The Chamber will confirm this week whether Catalina Island is represented by Senator Wright or Senator Lieu.  Stand by!

Assembly Member Bonnie Lowenthal (DEM) continues to represent Catalina Island in the 70th Assembly District.  She was first elected to the Assembly in 2008 and is Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee. Prior to her election to the Assembly, she served terms on the Long Beach Unified School Board and Long Beach City Council. During the 2012 legislative year, Assembly Member Lowenthal voted in agreement with the CalChamber on just 3 of 11 top priority business bills. Only 6 members of the 80 member Assembly had worse "business votes."

Alan Lowenthal (DEM) is Catalina Island's new Congressman in the US House of Representatives, representing the newly created 47th Congressional District.  The Congressman previously served 6 years on the Long Beach City Council, three terms in the California Assembly and two terms in the California Senate.  During the 2012 legislative year, Congressman Lowenthal served in the California Senate, where he voted in agreement with the CalChamber of 2 of 9 top priority business bills (he did not vote on one other bill).  Of the 39 members of the Senate, just 4 had worse "business votes."
CA Dept. of Fish & Game Advises Against Feeding Deer
Feeding Wild Deer is Dangerous And Illegal
It has been noticed that people are coming into close contact with and feeding wild deer.  Residents and visitors should be advised that feeding of big game mammals, including deer, is unlawful and may result in fines (California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Section 251.3).

According to the California Department of Fish & Game, deer carry ticks and other bugs and diseases that can transfer to people and then to their household pets.  Lyme Disease, caused by ticks, is one of the serious illnesses humans can get from contact with wild deer.

Why take a chance?  Play it safe and obey the law by not feeding wild deer.

2013 Newspapers Banner Buys
Every year the Catalina Island Chamber negotiates newspaper advertising rates for mainland newspaper buys. This year we will be advertising in 4 mainland newspapers for a total of 10 dates.

We have negotiated some great display ad rates and Business Directory rates.  The Business Directory rates are a great deal for wide newspaper exposure for little money.  For one insertion the rates range from $60 (in the San Diego paper) to $246 (in the Orange County Register) while the value is up to $650 per insertion.  If you are interested in exposure in all 4 papers for the 10 advertising dates, we are offering an easy way to insert all of them at one time without worrying about each newspaper deadline.  Just fill out the Business Directory Form link HERE.  The cost for a Business Directory for all 10 newspaper dates is $1581.28 - a value of $4,152.  Please submit your form by January 18th to the Visitor Center or bring to Donna Harris.   Please contact Donna Harris if you have any questions about the Business Directory Ad program.

If you are interested in Display Ad rates for any of the newspaper buys, please contact your newspaper representative.  If you don't know who that is, please contact Donna Harris and she can refer you to the representative handling Catalina accounts.

The schedule for the 4 mainland newspapers is:
LA Times - March 10th, May 19th, September 8th
Orange County Register - March 24th, May 12th
LANG (9 local papers) - February 3rd and April 14th  (see below for more information)
UT San Diego - March 17th and April 21st and September 15th.

LANG Newspaper Banner Advertising Opportunity
