"I wanted you to know that it's so important to me that Kol Ami keep thriving and growing." - Renewing member I have been so inspired these last few days - so many people are standing up and saying "what can I do to help? What if I can give an extra amount over my dues." I am deeply grateful to everyone I've spoken with, every single member who has come forward - whether they can increase their gift by a small amount or large - is helping to sustain the congregation while we investigate all the possible ways we can create a long-term sustainable financial plan. The way everyone is getting invigorated and creative on a new level is fantastic to see.
I want you to know I appreciate everyone's participation and involvement in this process we're going through, figuring out how to be long-term sustainable so that, as Andrew Reback so movingly said, Kol Ami is here for his kids and their kids. It's not a simple or easy conversation, but it is critical for the community as a whole to engage with it, to look at who we are and who we want to be moving forward. And I've been having great conversations with people about starting to envision what members want to see in the next 5-10-15 years. Peter Mackler, head of our Ritual Pillar, said at services Friday night as he left for Israel - "Every time I come back from Israel I carry a little bit of Hartman with me; and I promise you, every time I go to Israel I take Kol Ami with me." So many people volunteer to make this place run that I can't begin to list them without fear of leaving someone out, but as I said Thursday night, we really couldn't do any of this without you - your creativity, your heart, your commitment to Kol Ami.
On occasion I've heard people say they don't feel they've been invited to participate in organizing or contributing ideas to events and activities. Well, please consider this my personal invitation to get involved. Whatever you're interested in, we have other folks who want to join together - the whole idea underlying the Pillar system is to empower all congregants to find what you want to create and lead, and to do that together. From exploring the hidden gems of Los Angeles to baking creative challah recipes together to going to Color Me Mine and painting gnomes (now, I know that's not just me), know that there is someone else who wants to join you.
To start brainstorming and talking about interactive and engaging events you want to make happen, I encourage you to email the following people (and I'm always happy to talk srosestern@kol-ami.org) -
Thank you for all your time, energy and ongoing participation,
Sadie

Aaron Belkin, the openly gay longtime expert on LGBT military issues as director of the Palm Center, found the Pentagon's statement "heartening," but expressed caution. "If that day arrives, successful implementation will depend on whether new policy follows medical consensus and applies the same rules to everyone."
Ironically, on the same day the Pentagon announced its intentions to lift the ban, Lt. Shachar, Israel's first openly transgender officer, spoke movingly about his own transition and the support he's received from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at Congregation Kol Ami in West Hollywood.

We're proud to share with you that the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences wrote an article chronicling Rabbi Denise Eger's rabbinate and social action work.
Alumna Rabbi Denise L. Eger is a Voice of the People
When Rabbi Denise Eger was ordained in 1988, she began her rabbinical career serving a gay synagogue in Los Angeles. It was the height of the AIDS crisis.
Daily, she would make trips around the city to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, LAC+USC Medical Center or Sherman Oaks Hospital to visit young patients being treated for the disease. At that time, the fear of AIDS - and particularly those who were living with it - was palpable, she said.
"These were the years when families just wouldn't visit their children. They rejected them," recalled Eger, who earned her bachelor's degree in religion from USC Dornsife in 1982. "The nurses wouldn't walk into the patients' rooms, they were so afraid." Etched in her mind is the memory of having to help some of the patients eat because they were too weak to feed themselves.
"I was 28 years old and working every day to bury young men who passed away," Eger said. "Those years shaped me."

David Glickman, head of our Social Justice Tikkun Olam Pillar, has just returned from he second annual mission trip to Guatemala.
It was a great trip and huge success. Very special thanks to everyone in the congregation who donated to the mission trip!! Your monetary gifts, shoes, clothes and books were so very much needed and appreciated by Neuva Generacion!
The boy (top right) in the yellow sponge bob shirt is Jared. Kol Ami has sponsored his education for two years now! His grades are excellent and he and his mother are so grateful.
Mynor, the man in the blue polo shirt (bottom left photo) is the man that Kol Ami raised over $5000 for to help obtain prosthetics, a special wheelchair (for someone who is one-handed) and rehabilitation. He has been walking with his prosthetics for some time now! Thank you to Daniel Klotzman for Mynor's new shoes!
The group in Guatemale spent Shabbat with Adat Israel and David presented the donated prayer books from Kol Ami (see middle bottom photo). And the end result of all the Guatemala trips, Kol Ami built a new house for the Lopez Morales family!
Pillar 2 is planning another trip to Guatemala in January of 2017! Email socialjustice@kol-ami.org for more information.
