If you are unable to make it to Services and would still like to join us for worship, you can.

for Friday night services, and enjoy the spiritual experience of Kol Ami at home.

Join us, Friday at 8 PM, for a very special Shabbat where we stand together, as the Jewish people, with Israel during this time of violent turmoil.

Rabbis and leaders of the Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Reconstructionist movements are joining with the Conference of Presidents in declaring this weekend, October 16 - 17 (Parshat Noach), as a special Sabbath of Solidarity with Israel.

Joining the effort are the Union for Reform Judaism, Central Conference of American Rabbis, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Rabbinical Assembly, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Rabbinical Council of America, as well as the National Council of Young Israel and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and Jewish Reconstructionist Communities.

We hope that all synagogues will add special prayers in addition to the prayer for the State of Israel in their Sabbath morning services and that rabbis will use their sermons to discuss what is occurring.

We also hope you will visit Israel, express public support for Israel in the media and to elected officials, and maintain contact with Israeli friends and relatives.

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, URJ President said, "Our hearts break as our people are viciously attacked in communities throughout our beloved Jewish State. Our North American Reform Movement joins in solidarity with our people everywhere as we pray for a peaceful Shabbat that leads to a safer and more secure State of Israel."
Due to a generous Kol Ami supporter, this retreat is now offered at no charge.

The deadline to register for our Congregational Trip to Cuba is close!

Witness the timelessness, the beauty and the culture of Cuba. We'll be spending eight days and seven nights between gorgeous Havana and the bay in Cienfuegos exploring art, food, music, architecture and Cuba's small but, tenacious and vibrant Jewish community.

Trip dates: April 12th through April 20th, 2016

Deadline to register for the trip: November 18th, 2015. A $450 deposit per person is required.

More information and the itinerary can be found on our website! RSVP to the office at 323-606-0996.

Jeremy Gimbel's film, HATIKVAH, is the Jewish documentary of the year. Through an honest and thoughtful inspection of people's perceptions and connections to Israel's National Athem, Gimbel reveals a delicately nuanced story of a Jewish people, living under different flags in different countries, striving to define their relationship with Israel.

Simple questions lead to complex answers as the knotted threads of Jewish history, culture, family, politics and legacies are teased apart by Jews from all walks of life. HATIKVAH will leave viewers a little raw, a little challenged and extremely inspired. It's the kind of film you carry around with you for months.

Saturday, October 24th at 7:30 PM at 1200 N. La Brea.

This screening is free and open to all. We will also be having havdalah. RSVP to staff@kol-ami.org or 323-606-0996.

We are often called the People of the Book, but with so many Jewish texts it seems that "the People of the Bookcase" may be more accurate.  Learn the basics of four of the most important Jewish texts through 90 minute readings and open discussions. Walk through the doorway to a richer and more meaningful Jewish life and get a grip on the entire Jewish bookcase. ** All the training needed will be provided in class.**

Join Student Rabbi Michael Shefrin for a energetic, interactive, humorous, fun and informal swan dive into the Midrash, "the Disney Movie of Jewish Literature." The stories of Jewish heroes and heroines fill in some of the bigger holes in the Torah as well delight those both new to and experienced with Jewish texts. A playful look at the mystical use of math rounds out the class and leaves you feeling on the brink of discovering a whole new world - if you only just looked a bit closer.

These classes take place at 1200 N. La Brea and are free and open to all.  Please RSVP to staff@kol-ami.org or call 323-606-0996.

All lecture are free for Kol Ami Members!

This is a riveting novel about a conflicted young Orthodox Jewish girl growing up in the late '50s in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She faces two problems: the highly restrictive rituals of a rigid family and the condescending attitude of the Williamsburg Orthodox world toward girls.
Her awakening and breaking of the chains holding her down is the focus of the book. Rose, the older of two daughters, seems to become aware of gender prejudice at the age of four when she attempts to repeat the blessing her father is making over wine at the seder. Instead of being charmed by this four-year-old's attempt to recite a prayer, the family is outraged.

"Had she been a boy, the scenario would have been quite different. Perhaps
one of the men would have lifted him up onto a stool. Perhaps Rabbi Weiss
would have allowed him to touch his arm, looking at him encouragingly, and
everyone would have been delighted at this display of early saintliness on the
part of a child so young and so eager to perform a religious obligation. But as it
was, it was viewed as a sign of bad character and even worse, bad upbringing,
a female putting herself in front of a room full of men in a wanton and naked
display of desire to be the center of attention-an anathema to any truly
religious girl from a truly religious family."
