Dear Kol Ami Family and Friends;

Greetings from Eretz Yisrael! Our Kol Ami Mission to Israel is underway.
We gathered together in Tel Aviv for Shabbat. Most visited our sister congregation, the Reform movement center in Tel Aviv/Jaffa the Ruth Daniels Center. We received a warm welcome from Rabbi Raz and then had a marvelous dinner first dinner together. Well almost all of us. Neal and Ellie and I were stuck on a plane after many delays. But we finally made it at 11 pm that night.

We had a late morning on Saturday with some heading to pray at the Hilton across the street from our hotel. Our wonderful guide is Mitch, a former rabbinic student at the Ziegler school at AJU. He had been to Kol Ami when he was a student! But then made Aliyah instead. He was a perfect fit for Kol Ami.

He led us on a Shabbes walking tour of Tel Aviv, past Ben Gurion's house, down Diezengoff to the Agam Fountain, to the Trumpledor cemetery. There we visited the graves of many of the early Zionist leaders of pre-state Palestine. The martyrs of the Arab Massacres, Mayor Dizengoff and his wife, the poet laureate Chaim Nachman Bialik and his friend A.D. Gordon, better known as the writer Achad Ha-Am. From there we walked over to Bialik Street to see his home and then to the Rubin Museum.

Ruven Rubin was a major pre-State artist of the early 20th century.  Very significant for the way he captured life in early Tel Aviv and Jaffa. He was even ambassador to his native Romania in the first government of Israel!

Then on to free time for lunch, beach, other museums and a free evening to enjoy the nightlife of Tel Aviv.

Shalom,
Rabbi Denise Eger

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's highly anticipated decision on marriage equality to be announced sometime this month, dozens of community organizations are joining with the City of West Hollywood to hold a rally the evening of the court's momentous announcement. The court is expected to issue a ruling sometime between Thursday, June 18, and Tuesday, June 30.

Hoping for a favorable outcome, longtime Kol Ami members and daddies to twin girls, Josh Bobrowsky and Daniel Tarica shared these thoughts when asked what the decision would mean to them:

"We're elated that our twin two-year old daughters will grow up knowing their daddies' marriage and love for one another is equal and valued like other marriages. They will look back one day, perhaps at their own weddings, and wonder what the big deal was, love is love. But now, as a family, we can move anywhere in the nation and never have to worry that our marriage and family won't be legally recognized. While there's much work that is still needed on this path to LGBT equality, we feel closer than ever before to being treated as full U.S. citizens as a (hopefully positive) result of the Supreme Court's decision. We are so grateful and humbled to stand on the shoulders of giants who worked tirelessly to ensure this victory. Happy LGBTQ Pride Month, indeed!"

No matter the outcome, join us on Decision Day to mark this historic event.

Participants reportedly plan to gather for a protest in the area of Hollywood Blvd and N Highland Ave at 7:00 PM local time on Friday, June 26. Demonstrators are staging the action to commemorate the death of Ezell Ford in an officer-involved shooting. Approximately 100 people plan to attend the action. Please take this into consideration as you make your way to Kol Ami for Friday night Services at 8:00 PM.

Kol Ami is launching a Dining Club and our first (delicious) meeting will be at Jar 8225 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048 at 6 PM.

The evening will consist of a pre fixe menu for $55 per person. Drinks can be purchased individually. Diners will be billed individually and a 20% gratuity will be added. Places are limited so RSVP now to 323-606-0996!

Our New High Holy Day prayer books have arrived and they are gorgeous! Call the office at 323-606-0996 or email Kelsi at kcopeland@kol-ami.org to order yours today! Each set is $42 each.

Michael Shefrin was born and raised in Los Angeles and is entering his final year of rabbinic training at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.  He hopes to be ordained in May o f 2016.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts, Communications at Sonoma State University in 1997 and Master of Arts, Hebrew Letters in 2014 from HUC-JIR.   While in the midst of a career in the entertainment industry, Michael experienced a life-changing shift in his goals after volunteering in the Jewish community.  Today, he finds fulfillment helping people connect to their spirituality and elevate their lives and the world around us through Judaism.  Michael has been honored to serve throughout California as student rabbi at Congregation B'nai David in Visalia, and as rabbinic intern at Stephen S. Wise Temple in Bel Air and the Santa Monica Synagogue.  He considers it a blessing to begin serving as rabbinic intern at Congregation Kol Ami in West Hollywood beginning this fall.  Michael looks forward to learning with and from this vibrant community upon his return from Jerusalem, where he is spending the summer helping the new HUC-JIR students begin their journeys, and eating lots of hummus. Michael will be officially joining us in the fall.
