"Rain or shine, win or lose, Kol Ami needs to show up for the Decision Day Rally."
- Rabbi Denise L. Eger

"Same sex couples want to marry for all the same reasons as heterosexual couples.  Everyone deserves to love and be loved and this ruling in favor of marriage equality will allow me to share my love the same way my parents have for 59 years."
- Board Member, David Glickman

"I am 33 years old.  I came out at 24 years old.  I am a lawyer since 2008.  I practice Immigration Law and Trusts&Estate Planning.  My whole life has changed in the last decade as more of our LGBT community have COME OUT...showing the world and our loved ones who we really are.

My life work is also dedicated to our equality.  Most of my Trust&Estate clients are elderly homosexual couples, many of whom are now getting married, and instead of having to craft unique estate plans for their "partners", I am now proud to do traditional Family estate plans for them (us) as we are just as traditional as any other loving couple and family.  I inherited a largely gay/lesbian clientele from my godfather, temple member Ben Reback, (who recently retired).  Additionally, I have and currently do represent gay couples with the USCIS (Immigration Service) helping couples complete the Greencard process since President Obama extended the benefit to all married couples (straight and gay) in the aftermath of the Windsor decision.

My life itself is also a great example of the progress our community is making.  Because of the Windsor decision, Francisco and I were finally able to marry (having been together since 2008); and we were also able to file his Greencard petition because of Windsor and the Federal Law changes it ushered in.  Francisco was a Dreamer from Mexico, brought here as a child, but was too old for the DACA program.  Thus we had to wait until we could get married so he could finally have recognized legal status here after waiting nearly 25 years.  All of this good has happened because we all started to COME OUT, and show the world we deserve equal rights as human beings.  Marriage Equality has changed the lives of my husband and I forvever, and that is why we will be at the rally, and we want you to join us in supporting our community and our Kol Ami."
- Newly Elected Board Member, Andrew Reback

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's highly anticipated decision on marriage equality to be announced sometime this month, dozens of community organizations are joining with the City of West Hollywood to hold a rally the evening of the court's momentous announcement. The court is expected to issue a ruling sometime between Thursday, June 18, and Tuesday, June 30.

No matter the outcome, join us on Decision Day to mark this historic event.

Congratulations to Rabbi Denise L. Eger and her colleagues, Reverend Troy Perry, Rev. Dr. Cameron Partridge, Desmond Tutu and Bishop Gene Robinson for being honored by the Logo Network as "Trailblazing Religious Leaders who have shown the Light."

We are especially proud of Rabbi Eger for being named a Jewish Pioneer in LGBT Rights by the New York Public Library in celebration of this year's Pride Month!

We are excited to share with you that Rabbi Eger has been advising the Obama Administration on changing the policy of the Helms Amendment so that the U.S. can fund abortions for the victims of rape in conflicts abroad. A recent NY Times article describes the efforts being taken by Rabbi Eger and others in a coalition of faith leaders. An article by the Institute for Ethics & Emerging Technologies quotes Rabbi Eger as saying, "When rape is used as a weapon of war, women around the world suffer. They are physically, emotionally and spiritually traumatized. Then, without proper reproductive health care, including at times abortion, our foreign policy is complicit in further inflicting damage on her body, mind and soul."

Kol Ami is launching a Dining Club and our first (delicious) meeting will be at Jar 8225 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048 at 6 PM.

The evening will consist of a pre fixe menu for $55 per person. Drinks can be purchased individually. Diners will be billed individually and a 20% gratuity will be added. Places are limited so RSVP now to 323-606-0996!

Our apologies for anyone who came to our last meeting. It was cancelled at the last minute. Please join us for our next meeting. Email staff@kol-ami.org if you'd like to be joined to the book club group email. Our newest book choice is Judy Blume's In the Unlikely Event.

Today the world awoke to yet another disparaging statement against Reform Judaism, this time by the Minister of Religious Affairs, MK (Shas) David Azoulay. Azoulay met with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to discuss Women of the Wall, as tomorrow is Rosh Hodesh Tamuz. During the discussion - about looking for ways to curb the group's activity, Azoulay declared, "Reform Jews are a disaster for the people of Israel."

Please cut and paste the below letter, which was sent to PM Netanyahu on behalf of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism, and send it ASAP to the Prime Minister's Office (using this link):

 Dear Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,

As a member of the Reform Movement in North America, I strongly urge you to express your public condemnation of MK Azoulay's statement that, "Reform Jews are a disaster to the nation of Israel."

These remarks strongly and gravely upset the feelings of millions of Jews in Israel and the Diaspora and seriously endangers the relationship of the Jewish community in the Diaspora with the State of Israel.

This type of statement from a member of the Knesset strongly and gravely upsets the feelings of millions of Jews in Israel and the Diaspora, and seriously endanger the relationship of the Jewish community in the Diaspora with the State of Israel. A statement such as the one made by MK Azoulay towards any other sector, circle and group in the Jewish world or in Israeli society would be strongly condemned, and so should this one. The fact that this statement is made by the Minister of Religious Affairs, who is in charge of the provision of religious services to all Jewish Israeli citizens, casts a dark cloud on whether he is fit to serve in this position in a way that gives proper respect to the basic democratic values of the State of Israel and of its being the national homeland for Jewish people of all sects, communities and streams. In addition, this statement seriously damages the solidarity of many Jewish communities around the world with the State of Israel, especially during days when a sense of solidary has an important added value."

In light of the severity of this statement and knowing that you are personally committed to nurturing the relationship with Diaspora Jewry, we turn to ask that you make a public condemnation of the statement made by the Minister of Religious Affairs and repeat the commitment of your government to productive, empowering and respectful dialogue with all circles in the Jewish world.

Sincerely,
