Have you turned in your tzedakah can lately?
In just six weeks from now, ten Kol Ami members and friends will fly to Guatemala to represent our Congregation and engage in holy work. They will join with members and friends of Congregation Temple Beth Or from Raleigh, North Carolina. Together these two congregations will help build houses and bring new clothes and books to poor villages in Guatemala through our hosts Neuva Generacion. They will visit the small Jewish community of Antigua and bring the special Kol Ami warmth and spirit to them. We thank the Vice-President of our Board of Trustees, David Glickman for his leadership and perseverance in leading this special social action mission.
What does this have to do with your tzedakah can? I ask you to bring in your tzedakah cans because all of the tzedakah contributions will be used to help buy books and building materials for the villages in Guatemala.
You may have picked up a new can at the High Holy Days with the new special label announcing that our tzedakah funds for the first half of the Jewish year will be dedicated to this effort. So please, even if it isn't all the way full to the top, stop by the Temple Monday through Thursday 9:30-5:30 or Friday 9:30-4:00 pm (or bring it by on any Shabbat or during the evening when a committee meeting or class is happening). We will gladly add your change to help make a difference to our new friends in Guatemala.
And while you are at it if you are planning to be in town for Thanksgiving, start your holiday out right by signing up to bring food and/or serve at the Annual Feast of Love - co-sponsored by Kol Ami, Founders MCC and the Gay Men's Chorus - as we bring a Thanksgiving meal to the Seniors who reside at Triangle Square. Lend a hand, a kind word, a pie or a tray of stuffing or both and help us serve up two hearty meals for our seniors. It is a wonderful day and you will still have plenty of time to enjoy your own celebration. This is a great Kol Ami tradition of Chesed-lovingkindness, and fun to boot. Thank you to Don Margolin for being this year's chair person. So call the Temple office or shoot us an email to let us know if you are available to sign up to bring food, take a shift or both!
This is our congregation in action. Be a part of it!
Shalom, Rabbi Denise Eger |

Please join Rabbi Eger and other participants in a special community event, for the first "Queering the Conversation" educational panel discussion on Thursday, November 13, 2014.
It is our hope is that through this conversation we can mobilize the larger community to make our world a better place for LGBTQ and Allied people - to truly tikkun olam.
As an official Compassion Week 2014 event, our panel will be moderated by Consulting Advisor Lee Wind, M.Ed. and will include the following confirmed participants:
This event will be held at the Founders Metropolitan Community Church and asks:
* What is our purpose as LGBTQ and Allied people?
* Do we have a higher calling?
* What are the tipping points that bring religious communities through (or to?) 'tolerance,' 'acceptance,' and ultimately to celebrating our queer lives and relationships?
* And what can we do - both as individuals and as a cross-faith spiritual community - to create LGBTQ-positive change?
The evening will begin with a reception from 7:00pm-7:30pm, followed by the panel and audience Q&A from 7:30pm-9:00pm. We've kept this a free event with a $10 suggested donation.

Kol Ami is pleased to partner with Metropolitan Community Church, the Center and the Gay Men's Chorus to provide Thanksgiving for our LGBT seniors at Triangle Square. Don Margolin is generously coordinating our participation. Don attends Kol Ami regularly and is a monthly volunteer at SOVA (he also chairs Game Night at Triangle Square on the third Thursday of every month).
The 2014 Thanksgiving "Feast of Love" needs all our volunteers to help set up, prepare, serve and clean up for two back-to-back Thanksgiving dinners. We're also asking for you to please donate prepared dishes for the Thanksgiving meals. If you can volunteer your time, or donate a pre-cooked side of green beans or better yet, a whole turkey, please click here. (If you want to cook together at Kol Ami before Thanksgiving, please let Don know).

Kol Ami presents the Big Night Movie Event and Timpano
Join us on December 2nd at 7 PM for nosh and the viewing of Big Night! This movie was not only Stanley Tucci's break out role, it was also the inspiration for a Timpano-cooking craze. Mr. Tucci actually co-wrote and co-directed the film as well. While he does prove his incredible talent, the mouth-watering Italian dish is the unspoken star of the movie and will have you craving pasta and meatballs for days.
Have your own real-life "Big Night" at Kol Ami's Timpano event!
Neil Romanoff, an extremely accomplished chef who has cooked with the best, is generously hosting a night of Timpano, the ultimate dinner treat! On January 17th, 2015, Neil is inviting twelve very lucky individuals into his home and will teach them how to prepare Timpano from scratch. It is truly a once in a lifetime cooking experience! The silent auction for these twelve exclusive spots will kick off December 2nd at the
Big Night Movie Event.
