Me...

Hi, I'm Kyle Goertzen and I am one of Tamarack's Residential Care Workers.

A typical shift at Tamarack will involve me conversing with clients, staff, visitors and graduates, as well as taking calls from people inquiring about our program.

I enjoy cooking and have the opportunity to help prepare healthy meals as one of my  tasks in an evening shift.

Making sure that the house and clients are safe and well is my main priority and part of this involves providing support and direction to the clients after hours. This comes naturally to me as I am in recovery myself and I understand where our clients have been, where they are now, and what they are trying to achieve.

...in three

1. What's the part of your job that keeps you coming in every day?

Being able to give back. I am a graduate of Tamarack's program and know how overwhelming treatment can be at times. To be able to come back as person of value is huge.

2. When I'm at Tamarack you'll never find me without...

A glass of water, a strong sense of gratitude, and a positive outlook.

3. Morning person or
night owl?

Morning person. I have a geriatric bedtime and I'm usually tucked in by 10 pm. I missed enough sleep in my youth... I'm making up for it now.

  • Our treatment program is flexible. We will take clients into the program as early as 10 days free of substances (for a longer 78 day program) and we can extend the program after the client's graduation date for as long as  is required to meet individual needs. Read more about our flexible treatment options.

Welcome!

Greetings!

Welcome to the second edition of the branch. In this issue we're celebrating success by focusing on the achievements of our program, staff and clients that have resulted from hard work, personal commitment and the support of the wider community.

The year began with preparations for an assessment visit from Accreditation Canada, the successful completion of which was an important achievement for Tamarack. You can read more about this and what it means for the agency here.

During this very busy time we were grateful for opportunities to stay connected to and supported by the recovery community. We made presentations at AFM and Seven Oaks and also benefited greatly from a networking and educational event provided by the MAKE Symposium, facilitated by AFM. You can read more about this event in the News section.

Along with our annual budget review and planning, this month has seen us gathering statistics and performance measurement information so we can identify areas for improvement, pinpoint successes and plan to achieve even more in the new fiscal year. See the news feature The Stats Are In! for an overview of Tamarack's performance in terms of client completion and staff and client satisfaction.

Success at Tamarack can be seen in many forms and staff are privileged to see it played out on a day to day basis as clients develop the new skills and understanding that will take them into recovery. To honour these personal achievements we create a variety of opportunities to celebrate clients' success. You can read about these in our feature Celebrating Client Success and in My Tamarack Experience.

Program success is particularly meaningful for us when graduates return to Tamarack. Read our regular Me in Three feature focusing on a former client who is giving back to Tamarack.

As March continues to bring (more and more) snow, we're eagerly looking forward to spring and are making preparations for our 4th Annual Fundraiser. We hope you will join us for this entertaining event - we (almost) guarantee that snow will not be on the menu!

And finally, thanks for your contributions to our success. We hope you enjoy reading about and sharing in the celebration of what we've achieved with your support.

Sincerely,

Lisa Cowan

Executive Director

Tamarack is Accredited With Exemplary Standing!

Tamarack strives for excellence in programming. Three years ago, with support from the Winnipeg Foundation, we embarked on the Accreditation Canada program as a way of demonstrating our commitment to high quality client care. At that time the agency underwent its first survey, called the Primer, to determine readiness for Accreditation.

This year, again with the financial support of the Winnipeg Foundation, Tamarack underwent the next stage of the process, called Qmentum. Following an extended visit to the agency by Accreditation Canada and an in-depth review of policies and procedures related to all aspects of the organization's governance, operations and program delivery, the results were impressive. Tamarack achieved Accreditation with Exemplary Standing, the highest level performance that can be attained in the Accreditation Canada program.

Philip Grandmont, Tamarack Board Chair states, "this is a milestone achievement for our facility which has been very much under the radar as we have quietly tried to offer hope to people with addictions for almost 40 years. Such an outcome speaks to the quality of Tamarack's addictions treatment programming, client support and the high standard of staff and leadership".

outofhouseOut of the House, Into the Community

On February 25th and 26th Tamarack staff attended the Knowledge Exchange Forum organized and hosted by the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, offering a valuable opportunity to connect face to face with other addiction and mental health agencies. The theme and focus of the forum was partnership and client resilience and involved participants exploring effective ways to foster inter-agency support and communication.

Many business cards were exchanged and we left with a better understanding of how we can best support the clients we serve.

Completion rates, Client Satisfaction and Staff Satisfaction: How does Tamarack Measure Up?

We are proud of our program and our ability to provide a safe nurturing environment for clients as they develop skills for recovery, begin their healing journey and make changes towards a new healthier life. Our completion statistics speak to this.

With average completion rates for addictions treatment programs in North America sitting at about 44%, Tamarack's completion rate of 91% is certainly something to celebrate. An example of Tamarack's responsive, client focused approach that has had a positive impact on completion is highlighted by Executive Director Lisa Cowan, "our staff work closely with prospective clients when they first make contact with the agency giving them an understanding of the program and staff right away. By the time they're here they already have a sense of comfort and connection which helps them stay committed during the challenging times". (Interested in finding out more about our program?, click here)

It would seem that this approach is working very well. Client exit survey data for the last 12 months shows that 100% of clients completing the program are satisfied or very satisfied with the intake process, counsellors, the treatment program, overall management and staff support after hours. 100% of all respondents said they would recommend the program to others.

If it's true that the best agencies have a dedicated team of staff who truly enjoy what they do and are able to share that enthusiasm with those they support, then it should come as no surprise that 100% of Tamarack staff in an anonymous staff feedback survey report that they are proud to tell people where they work and 100% report positive relationships with their co-workers and with senior management. This compares to the national average of 80% reporting positive relationships with coworkers and 67% with senior management. (Like the idea of working or volunteering here? Read more.)

 howcelebrateCelebrating Client Success
At Tamarack we have a lot to celebrate and we do it often. Aftercare Counsellor, Joanne talks about how we celebrate our clients as they complete the program and during Aftercare:

Every client that graduates our program is celebrated with a "pinning". The unusual and long-standing name relates to the small Tamarack pin that every graduate is given during their ceremony. Pinnings typically take place on a Friday afternoon and are a great way to wrap up the week. The pinning begins with Executive Director, Lisa offering words of encouragement to the graduate and reflecting on what they've accomplished in the program before providing them with their certificate of achievement. The graduating client's counsellor then presents the Tamarack pin and well-wishes and supportive feedback continues from all staff and clients. Opportunity for the graduate to address the group with their plans and hopes is provided and the celebration is wrapped up with a standing ovation for the departing client followed cake and ice cream.

Such events are not only an important way of showing graduates that we recognize the hard work that they've put into treatment but they also serve to encourage the other clients in their journeys. Says a current client: "I think it's really cool that we can all celebrate this milestone together. We worked together so it's great to see each other succeed in completing this piece of recovery".

Honouring our Alumni and their accomplishments is another way we celebrate year round and this usually involves fun activities every couple months. We challenge each other to beat high sores at the bowling alley, or we may laugh until our sides ache at a comedy club. At other times we stay in to enjoy each other's company with pizza and games. Commemorating  milestones and sober anniversaries are an incredibly important way of giving each other encouragement and inspiration and such events are regularly on the agenda. This year, along with several one year celebrations, we've recently had the honor of presenting a year five cake to one of our graduates!

TamarackExperienceMy Tamarack Experience

Success to me...

I guess you could say that my life before Tamarack was not too different from anyone else who struggles with an addiction. My days were unstructured and full of depression and intoxication. My job as a professional was in jeopardy, my relationship with my children was a mess and I lived in a constant state of shame, guilt, anger and self-pity. I had worked so hard to please others but never felt good enough.

Coming to Tamarack opened up a different world to me. It was a healthy, safe environment where people were caring and supportive and I had not lived like that in a long time. It was well structured, which is exactly what I needed. The daily workshops and groups put the pieces together for me and more importantly they helped me to realize I wasn't alone in my experiences or thoughts or emotions.

None of this was easy at first. I had to learn to trust again and after forty plus years of being in abusive environments this was hard. The staff at Tamarack not only helped me learn about how the things that happened long ago were affecting me today but they were there to support me, which helped me to start talking about the things I never thought I could and put my experiences out there. I was finally able to let go, forgive myself and others and no longer sit in that place of pain.

Since graduating over a year ago I have stayed close to Tamarack, to family, friends and my meetings.  With the help of my supports I have made good decisions based on what is best for me. I had to give up everything in order to see who I was and what I wanted.

I am proud of my accomplishments, the biggest of them being sobriety. I have returned to work and feel I can make a meaningful contribution again. Life for me is joyous and free now. It really is! Of course it's still an ongoing process of doing the work and taking the action needed.  But it's different now. I have regained confidence in my abilities and I do not feel that I have to people please anymore. I just want to be the best, caring person I can be.

That to me is success.
