City Welcomes Human Resources Director Shanté R. Akafia
On Monday, Aug. 18, Shanté R. Akafia will begin work as the City of Plano's new Human Resources Director. She fills the position vacated earlier this year when Jim Parrish was promoted to Deputy City Manager. A Dallas native, Shanté has previously worked for the City of Rowlett as Human Resources/Risk Management Department Director and Human Resources Manager for the City of Allen. She currently serves as Human Resources Director for the City of Palm Bay, Florida. She holds both a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Grambling State University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Texas. She is an International Public Management Association-Certified Professional and member of International Public Management Association for Human Resources.

Get Involved Join a Citizens Academy or CERT Training

Plano residents have many opportunities to become more involved in the community while getting to know other civic-minded residents. Below are just a few opportunities to consider with evening and weekend classes: 

  • Plano Citizens Academy is accepting applications until Sept. 22. Class size is limited to 20. Each month participants meet at locations throughout the City.
  • CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) offers training in the fall and spring. Each session includes nine classes with information on disaster preparedness, basic first aid, fire safety and other topics. This fall's session begins on Sept. 11. 
  • Citizens Police Academy accepts applications year round but only offers sessions in the fall and spring. The next session starts Sept. 11. 
  • Citizens Fire Academy offers a 10-week session in the spring with applications being accepted year round. Only 30 applications are accepted each year. 
Plano Animal Shelter Waives Adoption Fees on Aug. 16
Join the Plano Animal Shelter in celebrating Empty the Shelter Day on Saturday, Aug. 16 by adopting one of Plano's shelter pets. Plano is one of 33 shelters that will offer free pet adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the largest North Texas adoption effort ever. Plano adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, all initial health vaccinations, rabies vaccination, microchip implantation with lifetime registration, personalized identification tags and heartworm testing (dogs) and heartworm treatment (if necessary). 2014-15 Budget Process Begins

Last week the City Council received the City Manager's Recommended 2014-15 Budget and Proposed Community Investment Program (CIP). We will be busy over the next few weeks reviewing the Budget and CIP documents and conducting public meetings for citizen input. As a citizen of Plano, you have the opportunity to review these documents at any of the City's public libraries or online. You can also share in the public input process by attending any of the upcoming public meetings. We have created a Budget video that provides highlights of the Recommended Budget. A complete schedule of the public meetings is available on The new fiscal year begins  Oct. 1, 2014. Thank you for participating in the Budget process as we work to provide excellent value for your tax dollars and continue to offer the high quality services and facilities that make Plano the city of excellence.

Attend MCOR's Annual Leadership Reception
The Plano Multicultural Outreach Roundtable annual Leadership Reception will be Thursday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Center for American and International Law, 5201 Democracy Dr. Join city and community leaders as they celebrate Plano's diversity and explore how leaders can work together to support community unity. The discussion will focus on "ROI: Shaping the Next Generation of Leaders."
