SURFSIDE Book-Signing

On Tuesday evening, November 11th, a room full of people gathered at the Surfside Community Center to hear America's most published Florida History book author and historian, Seth Bramson, give an engaging presentation on the history of Surfside.
This fascinating book documents Surfside's history in both words and pictures.

Here are some interesting facts about Surfside shared by Mr. Bramson:

Surfside began in the mid-1920s when Henri (Henry) Levy, a French immigrant purchased what would become the lower third of the town, calling it "Normandy Beach."

Although the names of the streets would be changed when the town incorporated in 1935, Levy's original layout is very close to how the town looks today.

The Surf Club was opened in 1930 and in 1935 several club members, upon learning that Miami Beach wanted to annex the property from 87th Terrace to 96th Street, incorporated the
Town of Surfside.

Among Surfside's famous residents were Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer; prolific songwriter Sid Tepper (among his most famous, "Red Roses for a Blue Lady," The Noddy Lady of Shady Lane," and "Kiss of Fire," and Steve Green, a former U. S. Ambassador and renowned philanthropist.  Today's well known Surfsiders include Lee Shonberger, the lady of 1,001 songs and nationally known architect Robert "Bob" Swedroe.

Surfside's police department is nationally accredited and a number of the town's employees have worked here for 15 or more years, including at least three who have served the residents for 30 or more years.
