In the past few months we have been having a growing internal conversation about our focus on Systemness. It represents an acceleration of our intentional migration from a holding company to an operating company.
This evolution manifests itself in many ways:
- It can be as simple as ordering office supplies from one vendor for the entire system to save more than $500,000.
- It can be asking surgeons to agree on a limited number of implantable devices to standardize care and reduce cost.
- It means agreeing on a single formulary for all of our hospital pharmacies to follow best practices.
- It means following a single approach to process improvement like Care Optimization to assure we get the results we want within a predictable time frame.
- It means agreeing to follow nationally bench-marked clinical guidelines to assure consistent quality care and eliminate waste.
- It means using our resources for the highest and best purpose for the whole organization.
No matter how systemness manifests, the common goal is to produce greater value for the patients we serve. Value here is defined as better care at a lower cost.
As our world of health care becomes more competitive and transparent, our ability to provide value will be the key to our success.
As always, I invite any questions you have on this or any subject we discuss in The Weekly.
