Kathleen Porter,  PHMG Director of Optimization and Performance Excellence

A new chapter begins next week for PeaceHealth Medical Group when nearly 70 caregivers in Florence start training for Referral Management Improvement. This new set of processes very purposefully puts the patient at the center of all that we do when we refer them for care.

We began this chapter months ago, when a team of dedicated frontline caregivers from every community came together in Vancouver to create a patient-centered process for referring patients.

Referral Management Improvement (RMI) is a set of practices designed to provide a highly satisfying experience for patients when they need a referral. Starting next week in Florence, caregivers and providers, are being trained community by community.

This is important for two reasons. First, it means we have successfully used lean concepts to chart a course for future similar improvements and standardization needed to bring us closer to our goal of being a high-performing medical group.

Second, after RMI training is complete in every clinic come the end of April, our patients will have a vastly improved care experience.

Benefits will include:

  • Improved scripting and data collection at point of scheduling
  • Streamlined check-in
  • Real-time order (referral entry) in the exam room
  • Improved check-out process
  • Department level preference lists that make it easier for providers to make an order
  • Improved work queues to increase productivity and reduce rework/wait time
  • Enhanced job aides and reference materials for using standard best practices

RMI is vital in our journey to becoming the medical group of choice for our patients, as well as for referring providers.

The success of this improvement needs everyone to focus on doing their part and doing it well so that our patients get a great experience when they need a referral.

Thank you for all that you do!
