PeaceHealth's 2014 Spirit of Healing awards were recently announced, and I'm thrilled PHMG's own Kris Sandholm is this year's recipient for Respect. As manager of PHMG Pediatrics in Bellingham, Kris leads a strong group of providers and caregivers. I've asked Kris to share her secrets to success and how she incorporates our mission and values into her busy days:
"The secret is simply in valuing people. The most important part of my role is ensuring the staff have what they need each day to do their job and that I support the needs of patients in any way I can (from assisting in scheduling appointments to facilitating difficult conversations in co-parenting situations).

"I check in with staff daily to see how their day is and if there is anything I can do to support their work. I also place a high value in getting to know the people I work with, whether it is information about their families or supporting them through difficult times.
"It's important to treat others as I wish to be treated. Some days that is simply by listening to the frustrations in someone's day and other days it can be apologizing for my actions when I didn't get things just right. It is important as a leader to be vulnerable with those around you; people are more likely to follow someone they see as genuine. I am lucky to be surrounded in the Pediatrics clinic by hard-working, dedicated and compassionate staff. They motivate me to do my best each day and they give me grace when I don't get things quite right."
