OpenNotes is a national health care initiative that will arrive in our Family Medicine of Southwest Washington residency clinic in Vancouver on Oct. 1.
This initiative enables patients to view their providers' completed and released visit notes through PatientConnection. OpenNotes is a simple tool that's demonstrating the ability to enhance the patient-provider relationship and helps patients become more involved with their care.
In the Pacific Northwest, many organizations have already come up on OpenNotes and are reporting very little impact on providers, but significant improvement in patient satisfaction and engagement:
- Kaiser Permanente NW
- Veterans Administration
- OHSU
- Legacy Health
- OCHIN
- The Portland Clinic
- The Vancouver Clinic
- Salem Health
- Samaritan
- Harborview Medical Center
Patients do have the legal right to see their medical records and PHMG is committed to efforts like these that improve transparency and quality of care.
We also understand there may be apprehension inviting patients to review visit notes. We have started to discuss this initiative across many of the CAC teams and also will be bringing it to the provider meetings to gain additional input as we learn from the implementation in Vancouver to ensure all providers have a chance to understand it and discuss concerns.
Our initial implementation begins at FMSW. We'll assess the progress at this clinic before moving forward with implementing in other clinics and networks.
Please be assured that OpenNotes does not require learning any new processes in Epic. And those providers who are doing it do not report any increased workload on their practices.
Furthermore, the work on OpenNotes has not in any way detracted from the substantial ongoing efforts to improve provider and staff experience with using Epic.
You may view the OpenNotes FAQ that explains how it works and other topics related to this implementation. Thank you to FMSW for their willingness to go live with OpenNotes next month.
