Mentorship brings unexpected gifts. We know that it's been shown to boost the morale and retention of new providers. It's also a good way to help our fresh colleagues establish friendship and ties in both the medical group and their new communities, while giving them the practical information they need to establish booming practices.
However, it also brings rich rewards to those who mentor. As one mentor put it, "It takes me out of my own issues and problems and allows me to help someone new understand what we're all about -- colleagues supporting colleagues. Modern medical practice can sometimes be a little lonely; mentoring someone else is one strategy I use to build bridges to others."
About half of our PHMG communities have a mentorship program, some stronger than others. A group of physicians and operational folks from across PHMG came together over the past year to look at best practices and what's worked well. They have synthesized this practical wisdom into a set of easy-to-use tools that communities can use to either launch a new program or improve an existing one.
In the coming months, medical directors for each community will be looking for a clinician champion who can help with this work. These champions will receive state-of-the-art training from a national expert in the field of mentorship and coaching. In turn, mentors will receive more specific training and support to help them do their coaching with skill and panache.
