What an honor it is to introduce myself as the new System Medical Director for Specialties with PeaceHealth Medical Group. If one word could summarize my first two weeks at PeaceHealth it would be "inspirational." I've quickly become acquainted with many of the specialty care improvement initiatives underway across the networks and have been so impressed with everyone's welcoming attitude.
It's great to see that our core values really do play out in people's interactions and behaviors. As an example, I had the pleasure of spending two and a half days with a diverse team of 30 or so stakeholders from all three networks, Shared Services and Medical Group leadership working on fixing the referrals process. As a former ER physician, I have full appreciation of the need for referrals to work well and also the power of a team. I appreciate all those who participated in this important work for their commitment to exemplary teamwork. While we have a ways to go to implement all the necessary changes, the degree of respect and collaboration displayed was incredible and this has really set the stage for a new process that will significantly improve the lives of our patients and our caregivers in all communities. This is truly inspiring for me as my intention for my work as Medical Director is to do just that: improve the lives of not only our patients but also our Medical Group caregivers across our networks.
As I've reflected back on my experience of working both as a clinician and as an administrator, I've learned that great care only happens when we have: 1) high functioning care teams, that; 2) have a firm understanding of what they are trying to accomplish, and 3) get the support they need to do that work. Looking forward, the degree and pace of change that is happening in health care is unprecedented and risks disrupting any one of these core elements. My goal for the next 3 - 6 months is to spend as much time as possible in the networks, talking to physicians and staff about the direction we want to take our specialty work and identify the support we need to get there.
PHMG caregivers have a terrific reputation and I want to build upon that even further as the demand for value-based care increases. By serving both as a resource and collaborator with our Medical Group specialists, I am confident we can create the culture and outcomes performance we need to serve our communities long into the future.
I look forward to meeting with you soon.
