Lent Reflections
Journey of grace and growth
The Center for Mission is offering daily reflections throughout the observance of Lent, the 40-day period of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works before Easter. Click here each morning to receive a new inspirational reflection.
Dr. Howard Graman
PeaceHealth's "Spirit of Giving" philanthropic campaign kicks off March 17. This is an opportunity to connect with fellow caregivers in different ways as you carry on PeaceHealth's mission.

The campaign offers 19 areas that reflect PeaceHealth's services and values. This is your chance to make a difference for a specific cause that matters to you. What you give and where you give is up to you. Please be assured that donations support our PHMG mission and values.

What's your passion at PeaceHealth?

For me, it's palliative care and hospice. In this country we spend much more than other developed countries in the final six months of a person's life -- often on expensive and futile care. Many patients are not given a realistic set of choices for their care and often they're subjected to unnecessary, painful and undignified treatment. A strong palliative care/hospice program facilitates choice at a critical moment in time and permits us to accompany our patients during their final chapter of life. It is a win-win, as our patient is allowed the option to die in an atmosphere of comfort and respect, and we can focus appropriate resources on those who have a positive prognosis.

I encourage you to reflect on your PeaceHealth story and to consider supporting our campaign.

PatientConnection Activations
Keys to patient activations
A couple weeks ago we mentioned the progress made across the networks in patient activations. In particular, the Santa Clara clinic reported strong gains in February. Clinic manager Stephanie Drews provides the following keys to Santa Clara's success:
  • Results - "I'm a bit competitive and so is my staff. I engage with them daily. We keep a visual tally which makes it fun to see the numbers increase daily."
  • Choice - "I choose my attitude when I walk through the door. I feel my staff will not be charged and energized unless I am."
  • Passion - "I thank God every day for my family, my health and my job."
Like Drews, Lorne Bigley, MD brings a competitive and lighthearted approach to the PatientConnection Contest. Bigley credits his staff's combined efforts to help him sign up patients. Dr. Bigley and his assistants ensure each patient has at least one opportunity to sign up during a visit. It starts with a quick question:

"Do you use email or a smartphone?"

If the patient answers "yes," Bigley and his staff explain the benefits of PatientConnection and immediately launch the MyChart Admin on the office computer to begin the activation process. "If they can use email, they can use PatientConnection," Bigley says. "I now have folks from 18-92 years old using it."

John Hamill, MD utilizes the same approach, "I ask patients if they use the Internet. If they do, I launch MyChart and allow them to sign up in the office." Hamill notes some patients have trouble with the activation, and he's quick to provide assistance.

Patients appreciate the communication benefits with the system, according to Khurram Naqvi, MD. "My patients have expressed to me the pleasure of being able to communicate with me and also, despite my hectic schedule, the timeliness of my replies." Patients value fewer barriers between themselves and their physician.

"Patients find their needs are more efficiently met using PatientConnection," Naqvi says. Once patients understand these benefits, they're more inclined to activate and use an account.

The PatientConnection Contest continues through the end of June with the goal of 50,000 patient activations. As of March 13, there are 23,460 total activations.
PHMG Doctors Share Their Stories
Doctors Day - March 30

Sudeshna Banerjee, MD
With Doctors Day later this month, PeaceHealth asked doctors to share their stories and why they got into medicine.

We'll feature their profiles throughout the month of March.

Lawrence Neville, MD Neurology: "I can't think of another profession that lets you exercise your mind in the way that medicine does, and if you let it, it will change your heart."

Sudeshna Banerjee, MD Cardiology: "I can make a really good impact on patients with the medications I prescribe in cardiology as well as through interventional (placed stents) to improve their mortality and their quality of life."
