Dr. Howard Graman
As you may know, PeaceHealth publishes quarterly health & wellness magazines in our communities. Spring 2014 issues are arriving in mailboxes throughout Washington and Oregon this week. Alaska's community magazine will be published later this spring.

I invite you to check out these PeaceHealth community magazines online and see how they feature more than 20 of our providers. From health Q&As and profiles, to articles on telemedicine robotics and memory loss, our providers are trusted sources who share their knowledge in these publications.

These free magazines reach on average 50,000+ households in each of our networks. They are an effective tool to promote personal and community health, as well as a vehicle to market our PHMG providers and practices.

In addition, PHMG's Rebecca Foreman, MD and Michael Myers, MD will participate in "Talk with a Doctor" within their respective communities. These free, upcoming forums are open to the public and they further provide an opportunity for providers to connect with their communities.

Thank you to our doctors participating in these spring magazines and forums. Truly, PHMG providers are valuable not only to our patients, but to our community as well. If you have topic ideas for upcoming issues or if you'd like to contribute, you may contact the editor.

PHMG Doctors Share Their Stories
Doctors Day - March 30

Leslie Pelinka, MD (right)
With Doctors Day later this month, PeaceHealth asked doctors to share their stories and why they got into medicine.

We'll feature their profiles throughout the month of March.

Janjan Reforma, MD chose family medicine because "I was inspired by our family doctor in the Philippines who was very inspirational to me."

Leslie Pelinka, MD became a pediatrician because she finds children inspiring. "They are full of innocence, hope and delight, and remind me of everything that is best in our world."

Diabetes Algorithm
PHMG Releases 2014 Diabetes Algorithm
PHMG updates our Diabetes Algorithm based on the latest recommendations from the American Diabetes Association. There are two important updates in the 2014 algorithm:
  1. The Blood Pressure column is revised to align with the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC8) blood pressure recommendation of <140/90 mm Hg for people with diabetes-not the ADA recommendation of <140/80
  2. Pharmacologic management recommendations for glycemic control are now included as a new page 3 of the algorithm (Antihyperglycemic therapy in type 2 diabetes: general recommendations).
PHMG will continue to align with the ADA recommendations because we are benchmarked nationally against the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality (WCHQ) and the WCHQ LDL benchmark (LDL < 100 mg/dl) has not changed.

We have also developed a PHMG Education Toolkit to assist providers with finding the relevant guidelines and providing brief updates on the CBT and reports. We also updated our Diabetes Computer-Based Training (CBT) Module to reflect the new information for blood pressure and glycemic control.

You will find the Diabetes algorithm and the following guidelines on the System Clinical Content SharePoint site and in the PeaceHealth Electronic Library on Crossroads.
