This Week's Q&A

Question:  Will ICD10 be built into Epic Ambulatory and Epic Enterprise or is that a separate implementation?

Answer: ICD10 is built into our Epic ambulatory system along with the ICD9 library of codes. (It will also be built into Epic Enterprise.) Providers now enter ICD9-based codes in Epic on the front end. The codes map on the back end to corresponding ICD10 codes. When a code calls for more specificity under ICD10, Epic will prompt the user to enter more detail. While the system is in place to support us, there will be some education and further preparation necessary for the ICD10 transition next fall. Dr. Howard Graman
In today's modern age of medicine, we have many  roles that are integral to exceptional patient care.

Two of those have been in the spotlight this week:
  • Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Nurse-Midwife
The role of PA came into being in the mid 1960s and has since rapidly grown to more than 83,000 in the U.S.

Midwifery has been around for centuries. In the mid 1950s the American College of Nurse-Midwives was formed.  There are an estimated 11,000 certified nurse midwives and  midwives in the U.S.

PHMG is very fortunate to count among its ranks  13 midwives and 59 physician assistants throughout our networks. I've heard throughout the system high praise for these professionals. It's apparent from patient satisfaction survey results that patients are grateful for their energy and expertise as well.

National weeks of recognition* give us a good opportunity  to pay tribute to both groups of clinicians for the crucial role they play in PeaceHealth's mission.

If you haven't already, please let the PAs and midwives in your area know how much you appreciate the difference they make.

*Did you know this week is also National Primary Care Week? Rather than crowd the spotlight today, we'll talk about the importance of and changes in primary care in a future issue.

Flu Season
Protect Yourself and Your Patients
It's that time of year again -- time to arm yourself against the flu bug.

As in the past, PeaceHealth encourages caregivers to take all precautions necessary to fend off the flu--for their sake and the sake of our patients and families:
  • get a flu shot*
  • exercise good hand hygiene
  • use masks, gloves, tissues strategically
  • sneeze/cough into your sleeve
  • encourage others to do the same

For the dates of flu shot clinics in your area, visit the Flu Info Now site on Crossroads. There, you'll also find additional resources you can use with patients in your clinic.

*Caregiver flu shot rates are part of the FY14 CARE Award Plan. If you choose to not get a shot, please sign a declination form at your local Employee Health office by Dec. 1.
